Christmas List

Formbyman's picture

Is it too early?

I want FIFA 12 (for the Playstation 3), The "Smile" Sessions, Melody Nelson Deluxe Edition, the M83 album (I almost liked World Party) and a fanny magnet.

What do you want?

0

A Dukla Prague away kit

It's cliched to be cynical at Christmas

John_Black | 23 November 2011 - 4:36pm

That's what I got last year.

Tru dat.

This year I want an Albert Hammond bootleg.

0
Paul Waring | 24 November 2011 - 6:56pm

World peace...

Oh, wait, this isn't Miss America after all, is it?

0
oktapod | 23 November 2011 - 4:40pm

Decision required

Make your mind up! Do You want world peace or Miss America?

2
Colin H | 23 November 2011 - 6:19pm

I've found a coat over here.

It says "Colin H" on the label..

2
Lenny Law | 24 November 2011 - 12:45am

Ah yes, that'll be mine...

...and is that the rest of the Massive holding the door open for me? Er, thanks....

2
Colin H | 24 November 2011 - 1:11am

WERE YOU BORN IN A BARN

Wood in th'ole. Good grief...

1
FakeGeordie | 26 November 2011 - 10:21am

Buddy Holly....

.....the recent 'Apartment Tapes' CD on Rollercoaster would be nice, and I'll have a spring in my step if all four 'Champions' League teams aren't 'Champions' League teams come Christmas.

0
ranger | 23 November 2011 - 6:21pm

That Makes it Tough!

A good call but are you sure you have got this right? I think that the Rollercoaster album has the overdubbed versions! you do not want these!!!
Seek out the completely undubbed versions - just Holly and his guitar - if you have never heard them they'll bring tears to your eyes.

Kindle

Would love a Kindle but do not think funds are going to stretch to it this year. Need to enter lots of competitions and try to win one :-)

I would like for Christmss

The time to:

Watch the films
Read the books
Listen to the music

That I've already got. Just the time. It's all I ask.

Warren Zevon

Summed it up perfectly;

“We buy books because we believe we're buying the time to read them.”

Because I don't really want anything...

...my Amazon list is full to bulging. Not sure how or why. Although I do want a Kenwood. And I want a Shure SM-7b dynamic mic (but won't get one for reasons which will become clear when you see the price). Used to have one. Flogged it in a moment of skintness and have regretted it ever since. The finest all-purpose microphone £300-odd quid can buy.

0
Bob | 23 November 2011 - 8:46pm

Kenwood be buggered.

You want one of THESE!

http://www.lakeland.co.uk/15909/Assistent-Original-Food-Processor---Mine...

Well I do, anyway.

(Only to be awkward because it's bloody expensive and catering-grade. The Kenwood does much more and, probably, better.)

0
Lenny Law | 24 November 2011 - 12:59am

Good call

I'd love an SM7. One bit of kit I can probably justify under the "not got anything else like it" rule.

0
Twangothan | 24 November 2011 - 8:41am

They're such great mics.

Did my first bit of proper recording without mine the other day. Jesus, I noticed the difference. Always buy the best handful of mics you can possibly afford, I say.

0
Bob | 24 November 2011 - 8:46am

Do any of you

know if the Blue Yeti USB mic is good for ipad and mac basic recording of voice and acoustic guitar?

0
jimmyshoes01 | 24 November 2011 - 1:09pm

Blue make nothing but quality.

I can't imagine you'll go far wrong.

Edit: although looking at it, the Yeti isn't suitable for iPod/iPad. You want the Mikey for that.

0
Bob | 24 November 2011 - 1:48pm

Formbyman?

A fanny magnet?
Wot, for your fridge?
Mmm.
Loved your grills BTW.

1
geacher53 | 23 November 2011 - 9:35pm

I still want a drumkit.

I've wanted one since I was about five.

Denied by parents. Now by wife.

Not fair.

3
Lenny Law | 24 November 2011 - 12:52am

Lets swear eternal friendship

And shake on it... hmmm not quite what I had in mind ...

0
FakeGeordie | 26 November 2011 - 10:23am

Got round this

by this by allowing son to learn drums

0
davebigpicture | 26 November 2011 - 11:09am

All I want for christmas...

is the complete sereis 6 Doctor Who box set... I've said to my family, as long as they give me that, I don't really care what else they come up with!

I have a few autobiographies on as well, so hopefully it should be a good one this year ;-)

0
missIda | 24 November 2011 - 10:29am

My Xmas list

is usually caused by eating and drinking too much. This causes my tum to get even bigger and results in a pronounced forward list as a result of carrying far too much excess weight...

2
Mark JF | 24 November 2011 - 10:45am

EBow

After a bit of discussion about them on here, I've asked for Santa for an Ebow this year.

It can make a guitar sound like this:

0
kidpresentable | 25 November 2011 - 1:40pm

I LOVE my eBow.

Make sure you get the eBow +, which has an extra mode which emphasise harmonic overtones. Unearthly, gorgeous sound. The combination of a slide, an eBow and a delay pedal is astonishing.

Enjoy it!

0
Bob | 25 November 2011 - 2:49pm

Ace

I did specify the Plus model!

I hadn't thought of playing slide when using one, but it makes perfect sense. I've never actually had a go of one but always fancied it.

0
kidpresentable | 25 November 2011 - 11:22pm

Takes a wee bit of getting used to.

You've got to hold it up near the neck pickup - I guess because that's near the middle of the string and so the string's oscillating more at that point. There's a sweet spot.

It's so great with a slide. To all intents and purposes it's a theremin!

1
Bob | 25 November 2011 - 11:28pm

Other than..

The entire output of Big Country, the outro of the solo in Don't Fear The Reaper and Ebow The Letter, which songs that I know might feature the above-named harmonic resonator gizmo doohickey?

0
Lenny Law | 26 November 2011 - 12:48am

EBow The Letter, for starters!

Mick Ronson used to use one when Bowie did Heroes live, I think. The recording isn't an eBow, but might as well have been.

I have to say, they're not one of those effects you'd want to use all the time, but they're bloody cool.

0
Bob | 26 November 2011 - 9:26am

Great fun

You have to slide them into the note to get that bowing effect. I like them for harmony guitar parts making a pad which is constantly moving. There's an example on my album, Bob! Never tried it with slide though, I have to admit. Did with loop station and acoustic guitar which was pretty neat. Off to try bottleneck! Have to say, I don't use it much, though it's always fun when I do. I think I used it once at a gig, on the slidy bit at the end of "Torn".

0
Twangothan | 26 November 2011 - 4:33pm

I wish

I didn't have to spend so long on the toilet. Bloody waste of time!
(though "bloody waste" hasn't featured thus far, thank god..)

1
STD | 25 November 2011 - 11:29pm

A Fanny Magnet you say?

careful what you wish for

0
davebigpicture | 25 November 2011 - 11:35pm

We are having Christmas a week early

as we are flying out to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.Wife and I are limiting amount we spend on presents because the holiday was very expensive (took 18 months to save for). There is nothing I want in terms of a present but since we are in Amazon rainforest on Christmas day my perfect gift would be to see an Anaconda in the wild. Doubt I will though.

0
Steve Turner | 26 November 2011 - 5:58pm

Millenium Falcon

Same as previous 20 odd years. Bet I don't get one again.

More seriously I hope GLW is pleased with her present (I always get nervous) and that daughters have that look of awe when they find out Santa has been and under no circumstances that a live anaconda comes within a 100 miles of me.

0
daddyclark | 26 November 2011 - 6:35pm

How about a LEGO one?

Like this..

Still available on Amazon at a tad over two grand..

0
Lenny Law | 26 November 2011 - 7:04pm

Hmmm

They do reckon you only need one kidney...

0
daddyclark | 27 November 2011 - 4:44pm

Please Santa

I've asked for series one of In Treatment for the last two years. Maybe third time lucky? A Very Peculiar Practice. A tape deck that coverts to MP3.

0
Rosbif | 27 November 2011 - 4:20pm

Rosbif -

Get an external soundcard and you can easily record your old tapes straight off the tape deck - using a scruffy old laptop if needs must as its the soundcard that counts. Use the sound quality option that suits you best then chop it up into tracks with Audacity or some other suitable freeware. iTunes will import it all for nowt from many formats, again tinker with whatever suits.

I did this with all my old LPs singles and tapes a couple of years back, a load of rubbish in there and it took a fair while (it was over the winter tho') but I am so glad I can easily play it all whenever/wherever I want. Quality is very good too!

1
FakeGeordie | 27 November 2011 - 7:38pm

One problem...

Many thanks for your advice - the fly in the ointment is that we don't have a cassette deck! In fact we no longer have anything that plays cassettes. So we have the option of getting a decent tape deck, which doesn't come cheap, and the other gubbins; or something that converts to MP3, which won't be as high quality, but will be better than nowt.
