Chris Martin ,the Jamie Oliver of music.
We went to see Coldplay on Monday night in Dublin with friends who had got us tickets at 80 euros a pop. I like most of their songs and find them harmless enough although a bit annoying at times,a bit like Jamie Oliver.
BUT,this was one the worst concerts I have ever been to. Apart from the fact that they were tiny specks about a mile away, they sounded exactly like the records. No live feel to it whatsoever. Slick and rehershed to the point where there didnt seem to be any rawness in it at all.
Are all big outdoor concerts like this now,a Mcgig? No matter where in the world you see them ,they will be exactly the same. Boring shit.
P.s 80 euros was a complete rip-off.Is this normal for this sort of affair or just good old fashioned greed.
PPs where is this weeks newsletter anyone.I love the stuff in this email. I would gladly pay money for this everyweek.

Newsletter
It was sent this afternoon. Maybe check it didn't squirrel its way into your spam folder?
Or perhaps its delivery has been affected by the postal strike.
new
Have checked Fraser, not there alas, thanks anyway.
Just said a prayer to St Anthony and checked and lo and behold, there it was . Excellent
Unfair
Jamie is a decent enough celebrity chef. He's done his bit for school kids and the national diet, showing a bit more care about food than some of the other pancake tosseurs. And I've done some of his recipes and found them to be be quite tasty.
Coldplay on the other hand are as enticing as a cold fried egg.
Unfair.
Coldplay are a decent enough band. They've done their bit for charity and the national image, showing a bit more care about music than some of the other plank-spankers. I've listened to some of their stuff and found it to be quite good.
Jamie Oliver, on the other hand, is as enticing as an old Boyzone single.
The original post is cock-on. Jamie and Coldplay are almost-there tokens for the nearly-there people who think they almost like music and cookery.
Aaahh.. the smell of snobbery on the nocturnal breeze..
People who think they almost like music and cookery
What does that mean?
I seem to have devoted a lot of time and money over 40 years to something apparently I think I almost like.
And as for cooking...
Carl.. I'm agreeing with you..
I took your spot-on post about Coldplay and tried to apply it to Jamie Oliver.
My point is that people who just sort of like a bit of music now and then type of thing 'cos it's nice in the background are the people who like Coldplay. Pap for the uneducated masses.
Ditto for cooking and Jamie Oliver.
Sorry
I can only apologise for a bit of oversensitivity.
However this Coldplay / Jamie Oliver equivalence seems to be spreading. A review in the Independent On Sunday carried the same opinion. They haven't put in on the website yet so I can't post a link.
But enough about the support
What were Elbow like?
New
Elbow were good.I only know two of their songs but I enjoyed them. The leader singer at least showed a bit of passion. They remind me of Doves which is no bad thing.
What, you want 'rawness" from Coldplay?
Sounded exactly like the records did they? Had to use a telescope to see them did you? What were you expecting, shithead Martin to slash himself with glass? Jay Z to come on? Drive by shoot-outs?
Settle down Chabsy...
..no band that's worth anything sounds "exactly" like the record.
Coldplay's problems start with their bloody awful, meaningless name, then escalate from there to their crap songs, bland image and useless lead singer, a man so wet, if the band replaced him with James Blunt, it would be an improvement.
"a man so wet, if the band replaced him with James Blunt, etc"
Yeah. He's still knobbing Gwyneth Paltrow, though.
Not that I'm jealous.
time for a break
I saw footage of them headlining a festival over here in Belgium and was immediately struck by the thought "They look and soung bored of themselves" Everything about all 4 of them was so utterly bereft of joy or enthusiasm that one had to think a good 13-14 year break would do them the world of good
Have to admit
Their albums wash over me - if one's on in the car I can't tell when one track ends and the next one starts.
Thing is, Viva la Vida is a good, quite affecting pop record on its own. Amongst the rest of the album it just gets lost. Are they really the same live?
I don't get it... What's wrong with them?
Coldplay are - for me - quite clearly one of the best acts of the past few years and I just don't understand why people feel the need to knock them. I've been a fan ever since the first singles, and I'm amazed by the vitriol they've provoked among normally calm and reasonable people. Clearly the Massive are no exception here.
I get the fact that everyone likes what they like, and that's as it should be - it's the driving force behind this site apart from anything else. But what I don't understand is what people have against this band which leads the usually eloquent posters on this blog to descend into name-calling and knee-jerk grumpiness rather than providing a decent explanation. I suspect it's simply because they're popular, but maybe I'm being unfair.
Why do I like them? Because they make intelligent, life-affirming pop; because they can effortlessly knock out an anthem that sounds timeless; because they can unite huge crowds without resorting to beered-up laddishness; because they so clearly love what they are doing. No doubt all those reasons are ripe for criticism and are exactly what you'd expect of someone who only 'nearly likes' music. But come on, Word-people: if this IS the home of "intelligent life on planet rock" give me a reason for your hatred. Not just the hatred.
what hatred?
I only detect 1 hatred post in this thread, the rest is just calm observations and opinions as per.
I don't like them because (and this is my opinion I dont claim it as fact);
His voice I find neither beautiful or powerful
The lyrics I find neither inspiring or interesting
The music to my admittedly untrained ears follows a pattern of 2-4 note repitition. Usually starts with piano, add guitar add bass and drums close with strings. Probably a chord change in there somewhere before the strings.
I've seen them live a few times and they were among the weakest live experiences I've been at
You want hatred from the massive? try a Moz thread or the Mags letters page!
The reason for my personal..
..dislike (not hatred..I save that for more worthy targets)is that Coldplay are a classic case of style over content. They have precisely nothing to say, either lyrically or musically. You wouldn't find their emotional centre if you burrowerd for a week, simply because they don't have one.
Compare them to a band who on the surface may be considered similar, Elbow. They're working the same seam, but that band is all heart and ideas.
You (and about 50,000,000 people) obviously disagree.
..and yes, if they were not successful, I wouldn't care as much, but I disliked Bon Iver too, for much the same reason.
The aural equivalent
of drizzle.
My issue with Coldplay...
...stems back to a 5-star review I once read of X&Y, which spent an entire paragraph taking Martin to task for his, frankly, rubbish lyrics. To my mind, if the lyrics are rubbish, you don't deserve five stars. A biased opinion, obviously, but there you are. Also, you can sing "Yellow" over almost any Coldplay song. : )
We've mulled over this time and again
And we always reach the same conclusion: they're dull
They're the 2000s equivalent of Phil Collins, Sade, Dire Straits, Simply Red and every other boring rock band whose CD cases have filled the gloveboxes of sales reps' Vauxhalls over the past 20 years. Music for people who don't really care very much about music.
Not that there's anything wrong with that of course. No one has to care about music, you might just like a nice tune, so fair enough. But Coldplay are bland as hell.
If I may damn them with faint praise...
...let's just say that Coldplay are a band whose greatest hits CD - when it's eventually released - is something I'd buy, but only after it's been around for a while and is in the sale for a fiver or less. There's just not enough substance there to want to pay more.
They've done a couple of likeable tunes that I'd be happy to hear again, but their sound is much too polite and simplistic. They lack the passion and vitality of 'proper' rock music, but at the same time they also have none of the glamorous panache or bare-faced spunk of classic pop. There's not even much of the tabloid-friendly 'personality' factor that has sustained the otherwise similarly mediocre Gallagher Brothers Band through their tune-free career. No offence to anybody who disagrees, but to me the 'Play are THE band for people who feel they ought to like *some* music but find most of it far too challenging and would rather look at a nice picture of a puppy, or a lovely new settee.
