"Chap with wings there. Five rounds rapid"

DogFacedBoy's picture

Sad to hear that Nicholas Courtney aka The Brigadier aka Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart has gone to join the old soldiers in the sky

Image

As a stalwart of the original series golden age with Pertwee and Baker he was the only actor to appear with all 7 incarnations in some form of other. Often the gruff no nonscence military mind up against the Doctor's scientific knowledge and diplomacy. And his unflappabilty when made to look foolish made him loveable.

"Splendid fellows - all of you"

Very sad news indeed.

Condolences to all his friends and family.

V. sad

The Brigadier was one of the great TV heroes of my childhood, and Mr Courtney himself was an absolute gentleman.

RIP.

Liz Shaw

Totally superb. Brains and beauty. Rather an unsung companion, it seems.

She was canned

as she, as a scientist, very rarely had to ask the 'what does that mean, Doctor?' questions that led to exposition.

And even better, Evil Liz from the alternate universe in Inferno

with evil Brig

Very sad

I'm really quite upset about this, Nick Courtney was brilliant and the Brig is one of the best ever Dr Who companions. I went to see "Never Let Me Go" the other week, and the greatest pleasure it afforded me was the chance to say "I'm pretty sure that's Cromer" during one of the beach scenes...

I saw this thread a minute ago...

and found myself shouting "Noooo!" with genuine feeling. I'm a huge fan of Pertwee and Baker-era Who and The Brigadier is a major (sic) part of the affection I feel for the series. He is a bloody legend.

"I'd rather a pint" - spot on. Rest in peace Mr Courtney.

Every time UNIT was on in Nu-Who

I was waiting for "my" Brigadier to make an unannounced special return appearance. Sadly, it'll never happen now.

He turned up

in the Sarah Jane Adventures I think and was mentioned in one of the Tennant stories.

RIP

The Brig was one of the great supporting characters in all TV. One of those losses that have actually made me feel quite 'odd', although I never knew the man. (John Peel being another example.)

Can I just add..?

Great thread title.

I wasn't aware of this news until just now...

From the BBC News website:

League of Gentlemen star and Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss remembered the actor as "a childhood hero and the sweetest of gentlemen"

Ditto, a childhood hero. I feel unaccountably sad about this. I think that if the Who-niverse gets under one's skin, it stays there forever.
