Changing Voices - Do They Get better or do you like the younger version???

Tony Donaghey's picture

Guy at work always plays Led Zep so I took in the Plant/Page album for a change - "ah but the voice is not the same".
But I think sometimes they get better....

I find it difficult to listen to Joni's early records...

as she sometimes hits notes that only dogs can hear. It is no coincidence that I start to love her records at the point when the canine bothering starts to wane, around the time of Blue. Her voice fully matured on the great trio of albums Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira and then developed again as she found her '60 tabs a day reflective jazz crooner' sound some years back.

Talking of Hissing and Other Canadian Singers...

...found this but I couldn't find the Joni original to compare how radically different it is...

Possible exception to the rule?

Tom Waits

Not to everybody's taste, but I much prefer his 'mid-life' croakier stuff to the early days.

Although he may have gone around full circle now...

Axl Rose

deteriorated when he ceased being Ethel Merman. At least he had the tunes and kicks then, before being overshadowed by a derivative rawk pillock in a top hat dangly fag JD bottle banality ensemble.. That takes some doing, even if you do sound like your gonads are being tenderised with a brick.

pg sounds different to his younger self and for that reason I don't think a Genesis reunion would work.
