CD Player Distortion

humphreym's picture

I have a Phillips CD 713 cd player that I'm having trouble with, at least I think it's the cd player! When I play certain cds (most recently Weller's 22 Dreams, and John Grant's Queen Of Denmark) they sound distorted. They sound fine if I play them on my macbook through the same hi-fi speakers, sound fine in the car, and on my daughter's cheap Sony hi-fi. My turntable and tuner also sound fine, and a lot of my cd's as well. Is this a problem with the cd player or cds? Do I need to get a new player? (I got this one second hand)

Are the

leads plugged in correctly?

Just a thought!

As far as I know.....

they are, but will check in a while. It's driving me mad!

Some older cd players

struggle with cd's that are over 74 minutes long (which I think was the original cd spec).

So that could...

be it! It is an old player, so maybe it's time for an upgrade (a cheap one!). PT, leads were plugged in correctly after all!

If the amp

is very old it could just be possible that its line inputs aren't quite up to CDs cut to the very high average levels that modern pop & rock CDs have ?

Turned out that...

it was the CD player. I plugged a portable one into the amp, and it sounds great. Although the new Weller cd does seem a bit louder than my other cds.
