Tunechecker - as above - is handy, generally amazon is cheapest but 7 Digital and even itunes itself can sometimes be best
the best value
on the whole is emusic (www.emusic.com), provided what you want is stuff Word readers like, not whatever is in the charts or Springsteen/U2 etc. (That said, I've just started to download the current Dizzee Rascal album so it can't be that obscure).
I agree
emusic is great - but it depends on her age and taste in music I guess as there is alot of alternative and weird stuf, not so much pop or big name artists.
It's a good way to limit the spending too as you have a monthly download quoto - there are various different priced packages.
buying music on the web
The major flaw with emusic is that the site does not tell you the bit rate of what you are downloading. You can find that elusive album but often the bit rate is only at 128 or 160 which is no good for me because I like to burn cd's and listen via my home system not an ipod.
could you not give her a budget
and get her to stick to it?
Just wait till shes back at school
I'm sure her mates will let her know where to get really good value downloads...

If you have a wi-fi connection at home then she can put endless music onto her iPod Touch. Remember to go into preferences and de-select volume normaliser (it turns the music into mush) and tick the box for higher quality downloads.
In the long run she'll only need to buy the occasional album on iTunes while still hearing stacks of new music.
