Comments:
Band member Phil "Cornet" was on the t-shirt stand telling us how knackered he was before the evening began which didn’t bode well. The show was sold out and the venue was almost a BSP cliché as punters weaved through fish ponds and foliage to the bar. That boded better. The band asked fans for suggestions of not often played songs for this tour and it made the set list a treat of singles and favourite album and EP tracks. In particular, slower songs such as opener “A Wooden Horse” worked well and BSP do the ‘less is more’ thing vividly. They also did the ‘more is more’ thing justice with a glorious long version of “Carrion” Rather charmingly, viola player Abi looked into the audience during “Living is so Easy” and grinned as if she seemed to spot a good number of us knew all the words. Then, the ending crescendo to “The Great Skua” forced substantial lower lip trembling from a grown man and Phil happily left the stage with a huge grin. It was a blast.
The Audience:
I joined the magnificently bouncy British contingent at the front. We were contained by a fine man who’d clearly seen this before and selflessly prevented any antagonising of locals through inadvertent bumping and gave me a slug of his beer.
Food & Drink:
Grimbergen blond off the tap was abandoned for the traditional gig lager pils type stuff. The connoisseurs’ choice was clearly never brewed to be drunk out of a plastic beaker while bouncing around to megalithic rock anthems.
It Made Me Think...:
I didn’t think too much actually. For the first time in years I just got completely wrapped up in a gig, just some blissful time of forgetting everything and being in the moment. I had a drink, a dance, a sing and a thoroughly enjoyable night.
