Brighton Rock

stimpy's picture

No, not Brian May's echo-fest from A Night At The Opera but Graham Greene's novel.

It's being made into another film - can't imagine it'll top the Richard Attenborough version from the 1940s but never mind.

The thing that grabbed my attention was they're resetting it in the mid 60s. Mods, Rockers, Scooters, Parkas. That's just wrongity-wrong; the whole point of Brighton Rock was the sense of a pre-war working class day out - dusty old pubs, milk stout and gin.

And, of course, Quadrophenia did the Brighton mods thang first.

Give it a try

I understand your concerns, but I saw it at the BFI last week, with a talk from the extremely smart and articulate director afterwards, who gave a very good explanation of all his decisions. I'm a big fan of the novel and the first film, but I really enjoyed this new version. Apparently the Graham Greene Society were similarly impressed.

I suspect a lot of Mods are going to be disappointed with its Mod content - no Mod tunes, for a start. The main reason it's set when it's set (1964) is because that was the last year when hanging was still a threat - it was felt that the present day, with no capital punishment, wouldn't be as effective, especially with the Catholic heaven/hell themes going on.

Didn't realise they

were changing the setting, why for God's sake ? Trying to be original eh - don't do a re-make. Mind you, Helen Mirren is in so it can't be all that bad. Bet that old grump Greene would have something to say, he never much cared for adaptions of his books, should have been flattered. One of our most over-rated writers and he damn near copied one of Norman Lewis's stories for The Quiet American.

It can work

The second version of the Italian Job worked much better than the original I thought. It wasn't set in Italy but perhaps more importantly, it didn't have Michael Caine in it!
They're different films in different places with the same premise. Why not?

the remake of the "Italian job"

is better than the original! Really? honestly? blimey I've seen some amazing things on-line but well there you go.

Oh Sure ..

Same goes for Get Carter with Sly Stone reprising Caine's role. And have you not seen the remake of The Ladykillers. So much better with Tom Hanks and ... some other people. Much better without Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers being effortlessly funny all over the place.

Honestly

I'm not a fan of Michael Caine so a film has to rise above that and I find the original a bit annoying. I know it's supposed to be a classic so I've tried it several times but I don't see it. The remake didn't have to be very good to be better as far as I'm concerned.

Somone will no doubt do my favourite Greene novel again.

I expect The Comedians to be transported to the El Salamlek in Alexandria, from the lounge of which Brown contemplates Egypt's descent into madness as the El-Gihad thugs emerge to stalk the streets.

I saw it being filmed

in Eastbourne and to have the whole promenade filled with scooters and mods and period police vans was pretty cool.

Then I ran 26.2 miles over the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head which was pretty wet. (3hrs 45 mins since you asked)

Am I missing something?

What the heck would you want to do that for? Why not just drive to Birling Gap?

the Richard Attenborough

film is ok but no classic and were 1940 and 60's that different in terms of class snobbery etc?

D'oh... My mistake

I wouldn't mind but it's one of my favourite Queen tracks.

As a way of making amends, here it is from '75 when they were at their absolute peak. One man and his Echoplex.

I seem to recall this was a Christmas Eve OGWT presentation.

No synthesizers.

No synthesisers

No synthesisers – arf!

You're right, though, that was their peak. I love that gig. Wasn't a cleaned-up version of it shown on BBC4 recently?

Hate to be a total bleedin' anorak but....

...it was on 'Sheer Heart Attack' wasn't it?

Heaviest thing I'd ever heard at that point.
