Brian Eno in almost-hit-single shocker
Posted by Auntie Beryl on 7 August 2009 - 1:31am.
Doing what I do, I have access to "the midweeks". And Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)" is in the top 100, having been downloaded over a thousand times.
Now I would love to see the Prof get a first bona fide top 75 hit, although it would need an increase in sales for that to happen. My question is: why is this happening now? Anyone?

It was used at the
end of Top Gear last week
... as a lament
for the end of an era-in this case Clarkson's apparent belief that the latest Aston will be the last of its kind.
Whether you like Clarkson or agree with him on this, the track's link to Apollo, and yes it has been heard quite a lot in FAM and quite a few other Moon related programmes, made it quite an inspired choice imo.
Top Gear's use of music in general has been one of its strengths.
Christ.
What a horrible way to get a near-hit record.
One predicted effect of music downloading...
... that hasn't really happened yet, was the idea of "random" hits generated by the use of a song in a TV programme or advert. The biggest example I can think of to date is "In The Air Tonight" (albeit a bit contrived), though you could make a case for Jeff Buckley's "Hellelujah" too.
Nice to see Eno getting within sniffing distance of the chart though - it may also have been heard by buyers in the amazing documentary "For All Mankind," which was on BBC4 as part of the Apollo commemorations the other week...
Journey - Don't Stop Believing........
Scaled to #3 in the US iTunes chart a couple of years back after its use is the very last scene of The Sopranos. Sold in excess of 100,000 downloads inside 5 days.
I know the answer...
it's that bloke from Raygun trying to show what a big fan he is.
A pedant writes:
would it be his first hit single? I seem to recall he had some success with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in about 1875? Is my memory playing tricks and confusing him with other acts that have done the song but I seem to recall a TOTP appearance?
And he has, of course, enjoyed chart success

Nothing on everyhit.com
but I am, as ever, happy to be corrected on this one. Wasn't TOTP 'pluggable' in the 70s and early 80s?
Fact
An Ending (Ascent) is also the basis for the Frou Frou song Hear Me Out which was how I found out about the album Apollo, and I'm very grateful because it's one of my favourites now. The Frou Frou album is very good too.
Here's a Spotify link to the Frou Frou song in case anyone is interested:

The combined impact of the Clarkson connection and a Chart Hit
on my reputation would have me urging people not to buy it.
