Book Seer
Posted by REdge on 11 August 2009 - 1:06pm.
The other day a mate sent me the link to site called Book Seer. The concept is simple - you enter the title of a book you have enjoyed & the author and then it produces a list of recommendations. Lovely - nice & simple.
Given how rubbish many booksellers seem to be these days at recommending anything that does not have a 3 for 2 sticker on it...

Failed
I entered the title of one of my favourite novels, Graham Greene's The Comedians and it recommended nothing.
Computer says no...
Well I guess there are some novels that are so unique that its difficult to recommend anything else. I would have thought it would at least recommend another Greene novel!
The Comedians
Carl - I thought I'd give it whirl on The Comedians & it worked for me...

Computer fault
I've just tried a load of different titles and authors and every one comes up blank.
I'll have a go at home.
At home
among the titles it comes up with are two Richard Adams's books Shardik and The Plague Dogs (or BookArmy does). I don't see the connection.

Work
I've no doubt that our IT dept are blocking scripts.
Nope
didn't work for me either.
How does it differ from the Amazon recommendation engine?
This one is what I use -

Can I suggest that if the original poster has encountered problems with booksellers being rubbish at recommending anything that does not have a 3 for 2 sticker on it, that he's going into the wrong bookstores? ; )
Evening all...
Cannot explain why it does not work for some. Hey ho. Nor do I think it is the best thing ever... just something someone told me about and I thought I'd share.
I would much rather spend my time in a good book store, seeking the help of a book seller. Alongside record shops, they are where I like to be left while the FPO goes off looking for clothes.
Did not mean to offend any book sellers out there... but you cannot escape the fact that most large chain book retailers just are not that great these days. Sadly the smaller shops are disappearing. While the large chains do have some good people working for them, the central sales teams force staff to focus too much on 3 for 2s and other such promos. To be fair to the world of books, they are not alone. Pointless promos are everywhere. I did not mean to infer that all book sellers are rubbish - that is not the case. However, the ability to go into a book shop, seek advice and then purchase something not deemed 'a marketable publication' is not an easy thing to do these days. Indeed, as much as I hate to say it... sometimes it is easier to research & buy online, and that is something that makes me sad.
