Bon Iver - is he actually that good?
I bought the Bon Iver record recently, encouraged by the wall to wall critical fanfare I could not wait to have a listen. Well, it has moments of invention and beauty but rather more of plodding 'so what' and 'is that it'. Have we fallen victim to a rather clever piece of stealth marketing? Was it really created in a log cabin between spots of deer hunting and general communing with nature? More importantly, would it have had such positive notices without the back story? He basically sounds like a less good version of Elliot Smith.

Ooooh
Thanks for the heads up, I was just about to buy it myself for exactly the same reasons. I await other replies with interest...
Elliott Smith... a bit of me loves him so much I'd even be willing to hear a less good version, but I think I'll hold off...
It's great
I've had the album for a while now and was quite non-plussed with it when it first arrived. It's certainly not an immediate hit, but now, given time and the right circumstance it's grown into a beautiful thing that bears repeated listens.
If it has to compete with the daily grind it's not going to win out, but played in those special moments when it can unwind it will hook you in. Buy it.
Its on eMusic
so I'm waiting for my next lot of downloads but I will download. I quite like the fact that it only costs around £2 in downloads. It makes me try stuff I wouldn't shell out £8 - 10 on cd's which sounds like Bon Iver.
