No sure if anyone else has posted this (I had a look but could not see it anywhere) - but here is Bobby McFerrin at the World Science festival shwoing the power of the pentatonic scale - really interesting.

If you have a chance/time

I'd recommend watching this whole event. It was a debate into how the brain perceives sounds and music. It really is very informative and entertaining. After the first part - which is Bobby improvising - the discussion proper starts here:

Pentatonic fun

I've actually tried this experiment at my special needs primary school, in front of seventyish kids and about 25 adults. It pretty much works; enough for me to try it more than once, anyway.
I didn't quite manage the panache of Bobby McFerrin, but then I bet HE can't play "She'll be coming round the mountain" on guitar while being attacked by a small, frenzied child.
