Bob Dylan's new album is at number one

Extra Texture's picture

Despite the live shows

"He last topped the UK chart with New Morning in 1970. His first, in 1964, was The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.

Dylan now holds a record, previously held by Tom Jones, for the longest gap between solo number one albums. "

What this reflects...

I suspect, is the demographics of who buys recorded music in meatspace these days.

I would like to congratulate Bob Dylan...

on this remarkable achievement. Paul Gambaccini will be doing somersaults this morning...

Wouldn't it be funny if

This was actually because of the live shows?? Surely no coincidence that the new LP was released when he was touring the UK and that it has done so well here?? Also, it does happen to be rather good...

Good on him

His stock is high, he's no longer an utter joke; and, although the new album is really nothing special, Modern Times and Tell Tale Signs were - which is presumably what people are reacting to.

How many do you need to sell in 2009?

Compared to 1969, 1979, 1989 or, even 1999. Is this another sign of how far sales are down generally, viz the singles chart? Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the record; I haven't heard it, but does it maybe not reflect as much upon what else is currently on offer..... Or being legally purchased in whatsoever format.

"...legally purchased in whatsoever format"

I think this is the answer. The proportion of Bob Dylan fans who access his music through legally-purchased CDs, as opposed to other delivery systems, is probably pretty high compared to other artists.
