Bob Dylan’s “secret wife”

Richard Lowe's picture

Of all the countless compilation cassettes, CDs and i-tunes playlists I’ve cobbled together over the years for holidays, long car journeys, parties etc. there’s one song that I suspect has made it onto the team sheet more often than any other: “He Always Comes Back To Me” by Clydie King. It’s quite a sad song I suppose. Girl has this boyfriend who “with girls (is) like a child in a candy store giving each new one a try”, but she’s resigned to it and puts up with it because “he always comes back to me”. It’s a beautiful record though and I absolutely adore it.
Clydie King released a lot of singles in the ’60s (comp on spotify) but never established herself as a solo star. What she did establish herself as, however, is one of the best and most in-demand backing singers in the business with a CV as long as your arm and as distinguished as any “supporting musician”’s in rock’n’roll: Ray Charles Phil Spector, Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Steely Dan, Humble Pie, Lynrd Skynyrd, Barbara Streisand, Kris Kristofferson, Tracy Chapman, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Mama Cass, various permutations of Crosby & Nas and many, many more. Not least Bob Dylan.
And, according to a typically bitchy gossipy article in the Mail on Saturday backing vocals wasn’t the only service Clydie provided for the randy old goat. She also bore him two children and did a stint as his “secret” second wife. Clydie King Was Mrs Bob Blimmin’ Dylan. Well I never.

Crosby & Nas

I know it was a missed key, but it still made me smile, the portly walrus and the surly rapper.
Hasn't Mr D had a number of wives over and above any sad eyed lowlanders? Haven't several, hyperbole possible, been what Lou Reed would classify as coloured girls who (can) go doo do doo, referring more to occupation than race?

Some people are so bloody ungrateful...

"Ruth Tyrangiel, his common-law wife for 17 years, said that in all their time together his only gifts to her were a tangerine and a rose."

And what's wrong with them, may I ask? Tangerines are delicious and roses smell nice. What's your problem, lady? Were you expecting a fur coat or a Cadillac?

If it's in the Mail

it must be true! Interestingly, Howard Sounes who unearthed Dylan's marriage to Carolyn Dennis said there was no sign of any other wives or children.

Sounes

I wouldn't be surprised if Sounes overlooked a few marriages in his research. The evidence seems to show that King was married to Dylan at some point-- maybe they married out of the country or in some place/way that ensured their marriage would remain a secret and/or harder to find.

Sounes, as a writer, understands that the power of small is just as important as the bigger issues-- like why his 1980s output was weaker: he may have been busy getting married, raising a new child, living the quiet life. His general point about Dylan still stands, even in light of the revelations that more wives might have come about during this period.
