Blue Nile Somerset house London July 13th

Chris G's picture

I haven’t seen the ‘Nile that many times (4 tops) but then again I think I’ve seen 10% of their recent performances!
The gig last night was truly excellent here’s some reasons why:
The venue:

I think Somerset House is perfect for this size of summer gig; a slightly sloping plaza, a striking back drop and a surprisingly intimate feel.

The sponsors telling a group of fans with an average age of 40plus (and mostly well off looking) in big letters that “rebellion is the only thing that keeps you alive”.

The sound:

is the sound at recent gigs getting better? Last night, for me it was perfect, clear and involving, every word as sharp as a bell.

The band:

5 years between gigs and they still stroll on 5 minutes late hurrah!

Musical highlights:

Easter parade, Happiness, Strangers in the night and Tinsel town in the rain (2x).

I won’t go over the top but the music was truly beautiful and the whole gig had a friendly joyful atmosphere, well worth the wait.
To quote my friend (who has seen 13% of their shows) “arguably the best gig of my life”

ps: Anyone got any decent pictures mine were rubbish?

Couldn't agree more!

Fantastic show, excellent sound quality, performances, rapport with the audience, the works. That's the 4th gig I've been to at Somerset House and the best by some considerable degree (but then one of those was Royksopp in 2003 who as far as I could make out were playing along to their own record). I was very tempted to shout 'Play Some Old!' as a pathetic ironic joke and see if it got a laugh or two. Thankfully I resisted. I had to leave halfway through 'Strangers In The Night' to get back to Kings Cross for my last train home and I'm really annoyed to find out that I missed the reprise of 'Tinseltown In The Rain'. Gah.

My favourite band

And I've never seen them live. Rubbish quality vid here but a good bit of banter then the best song they've come up with for years. Did they do it last night, Chris?

As perfect as it can get

As I posted earlier the night was perfect.

Agreed the setting was wonderful and we were treated by the stewards as humans. Liked the way we were escorted to our particular part of the bar.

There was one new song, apparently "work in progress"

When darkness fell and the building light up it was magical. I can't help but get emotional about the whole night.
After seeing Paul Simon going through the motions at Cornbury we were with someone last night who you could see loved being there!!

Well, see you all back there in five years!!

There are no words to convey

There are no words to convey just how sad I am at missing this gig. as it was I was traveling back from a tour that made no money, taking 7.5 hours to get from north lincolnshire to london. Couldn't get back in time for it.

Gutted.

Beyond Gutted.

Please tell me this isn't the last time they're going to play.

Still on a high

The very best thing about going to a gig like the Blue Nile at Somerset House is looking around and realizing that there are actually people out there with great taste in music. We're still on a high and adored every minute of it. The one thing I didn't know beforehand was how funny Paul Buchanan is - an added bonus. Thank you to everyone who helped create the amazing atmosphere.
