Blondie - Marvellous weren't they?

Uncle Wheaty's picture

My favourite band as a teenager.

Christmas 1979 TOTP, I was 14, they played this.

Happy days

First four Blondie albums

Not a duff track on any of them.

Beat that, Led Zep.

Completely agree

Autoamerican was a reasonable fifth effort but never really did it for me either.

The Hunter was best forgotten!

Disagree

The first four Blondie albums are perfectly acceptable Chinnichap pop. The first four Led Zep albums changed the whole music world. No contest.

Clem Burke

Brilliant drummer. Some off the cuff fills not heard since Moon's heyday.

Great Drummer

Right attitude, twirly drumsticks, disciple of Keith Moon, the lot - but out of time

Mike Chapman: "It was all over the place musically," he later said. "Clem [Burke] had this attitude that he was Keith Moon and just wanted to play every drum all of the time. It was a real challenge to convince them that the early demo of Heart Of Glass was out of tune and out of time."

Let there be drums

In terms of brilliant fills and endless imagination, can I nominate VW mechanic and late Buzzcocks drummer John Maher. Still think what he did on those magnificent pop singles (and the three albums) was pretty awe-inspiring - and Pete Shelley's pure pop isn't a million miles from Debbie's.

At 3.30 (-ish)

while singing "I'll have a cup of tea" she looks at the camera, smiles, and her cheeks indent a little, just before she turns back to the mic and does the "and tell you of my dreaming"

well, that's my Saturday made

lest i be accused of rampant sexism here, i think Clem Burke (drummer) is quite nifty

Never minded Peter Powell...

There were far worse offenders in the Radio 1 stable back then. I always got the impression that he liked his music and knew a fair bit about it. But it was oh so long ago, so my memory may be faulty.

Oh, and Nigel Harrison had Sid the Sexist hair.

Peter Powell

I agree about knowing about music but his smugness was what always got to me.

Uncle Wheaty | 24 September 2011 - 9:00pm

Do you agree...

that Nigel Harrison had Sid the Sexist hair?

That and going on about skiing all the time.

He once described his Olin Mk IVs as "Well-crucial skis"

Ponce.

Nope

Mr Controversial writes: A blight on radio and tv throughout the 80s. Never liked anything they did. Never fancied Debby Harry. I'm out.

OK

What floated your boat in 1979 then?

0
Uncle Wheaty | 24 September 2011 - 8:58pm

OK

Here are some from 79 in my vinyl collection - I wasn't happy with the changes in "popular" music in the latter half of the 70s! Also I'm not a huge fan of girl singers.

Damn The Torpedoes
Rust Never Sleeps
Strangers In The Night
Angel Station
Cornerstone
Christopher Cross
Breakfast In America
Even Serpents Shine
I Can See Your House From Here
Laser Love
Nils
Touch Me
Stormwatch
One Of A Kind
Spectral Mornings

I have five of those

Breakfast in America and Strangers in The Night I still play.

First four vinyl albums

My first vinyl albums were the first four Blondie albums, courtesy of a friend of the family being rather generous.

Eat To The Beat is probably my favourite, the first side of that is one of the finest runs of music by anybody; I never ever tire of that first side. Dreaming, Union City Blue and Shayla are my top 3 Blondie songs, apart from Picture This. Marvellous. Plus my favourite pic of Ms Harry is on that sleeve.

Meanwhile Jimmy Destri - especially on the Plastic Letters sleeve - is my smoking idol. When I was about 13 and practicing smoking I modelled my smoke pose on Destri. True!

There are some people who would be rock stars to any generation.

Amongst the blokes, one first thinks of Elvis.

With the girls, it's Ms Harry.
