Blog protocol

Stephen Hanley's picture

This is, without doubt, an excellent blog site. Many wonderful things for a chap to browse through, to ponder, and, when the feeling so stimulates, to contribute to.

But I’ve noticed on a number of occasions now, someone has raised an interesting point, or made reference to an entertaining video on youtube, only to get the rather curt response of “we’ve already discussed this”.

Is this an acceptable course of action? If you have posted such a response, ask yourself this: would you go around the gatherings at a party and say “be quiet - this conversation has already taken place”? Probably not. So let's not do it here. There are enough subjects to read – if you find yourself looking at something you’ve seen before, don't make the latest poster feel small, just move on to another topic.

Not all of us have time to read every post, so we may well allow something to slip by on the blog, only to hear about it elsewhere and consider it worthy of mention – and thus committing what is perceived by some as a serious faux-pas, resulting in opprobrium and a sniffy, nay, smart-arsed reply.

I’d rather see something worthwhile posted twice than not at all – but making bored noises when something IS posted twice increases the risk of the next good thing NOT being posted.

That’s it – back on yer ‘eads. And apologies if someone has already made this point…

0

Yeah

We've talked about this before.

But I agree - there's enough turnover of visitors to make any topic valid for reappraisal.

Captain Underpants | 30 April 2009 - 9:13pm

Really nicely put

and I agree with your sentiments.

0
Cobweb Steve | 30 April 2009 - 9:25pm

Agreed..

...as one who recently received a sneering put-down.

0
billyous | 30 April 2009 - 9:36pm

That Bob Dylan...

... is he any good live?

0
ganglesprocket | 30 April 2009 - 9:39pm

Apologies if.....

I hope that most comments about the earlier progeny of commonly featuring areas of discussion are more along the lines of pointing out earlier thoughts that can be added to the newer strand, rather than to detract from the reincarnation thereof. There are, actually, not really all that many areas to discuss, hence the repetitive nature of best guitar solo and best 3 albums by any particular artist etc etc. As a relatively long term blogger of just over the year, the once or twice I have pointed out a related dicussion is to prevent the foolishness of me repeating myself, together with, obviously, like us all, my wishing to alert others to earlier nuggets, of my self perceived wisdoms.
Maybe.

0
Retropath2 | 30 April 2009 - 9:52pm

Totally agree

I see no harm in posting a link if the same or similar topic has been discussed before, but this forum isn't just for the top 20 long-standing posters, it's for anyone as far as I'm aware, so topics can & should be revisited at reasonable intervals.

0
KDH | 30 April 2009 - 10:03pm

Smart move

Very well put but I'd like to make sure that we know there's a distinction between a sniffy smart-arsed reply just a smart-arsed reply as much of the humour found in this forum thrives on the latter.

0
JohnW | 30 April 2009 - 10:04pm

new

I agree with you about this blog. I love the various ideas and questions posed here but i have noticed that there are a few snidey types who are quick to let other bloggers that they dont belong here such as the person who posted the thread about the Real Madrid footballer last week. He recieved a couple of smartass replies about football having no place here etc. This nastiness puts me off contributing as i have also noticed that these same bloggers seem to be frustrated media types who couldnt cut the mustard in that world and use this site to make those of us who arent as smart{so they think]feel as bit small.

0
paintyface | 30 April 2009 - 10:09pm

I was with you...

...up until the frustrated media types bit. This kind of thing happens in all online communities, no matter who the contributors are. It's the nature of the beast.

I'd rather avoid snidey responses too, but this forum, on the whole, is so much more well-mannered than most - sometimes people joining in from other communities are more abusive when they post, simply because it's the norm elsewhere.

We can do better, though - if something has been posted previously, then there's no need to point it out in any other way than as a polite response to the question being posed.

There's no statute of limitations on double posting, but I do ask is that people do a quick search before posting a new thread, simply to avoid "what Austrian rap CDs should I buy?" posts popping up three days in a row.

Not that that's likely.

0
Fraser Lewry | 30 April 2009 - 10:27pm

I didn't take it badly

As the poster of the football thread I'd half anticipated some unsympathetic response, but I took it in good part. I've been here long enough to anticipate such sentiments and I don't really think they were snidey.
Vis a vis pointing out previous discussions I agree there is nothing wrong with the polite "For reference" tone. There have been a couple that have been less generous. I really dislike the exclusivity that exists on some forums where the greatest insult is "Newbie".

0
Carl Parker | 30 April 2009 - 10:59pm

Bullseye!

Nice one.

0
billyous | 30 April 2009 - 10:13pm

Sorry, disagree

Someone a while ago asked for recommendations for jazz albums for beginners. Now that subject had already been discused several times before, so the obvious response is "We've discussed this recently, here's the link".

What's wrong with that? Makes perfect sense to me.

0
Johan | 30 April 2009 - 10:18pm

Yes, but...

It's more about the nature of the response. There's a difference between:

"Have a look at this thread, you might find it useful"

and

"Groan. We've done this before."

0
Fraser Lewry | 30 April 2009 - 10:31pm

new

Who is we? If someone asks a question about anything then let other people answer their query. Just because you have discussed it doesnt mean we all have so would it not be better to say nothing and ignore the post than post curt replies

0
paintyface | 30 April 2009 - 10:31pm

Just politely post the link in the new thread.

Why say more?

0
Leedsboy | 30 April 2009 - 10:40pm

Utopian possibilities!

I must say, I'm with this spirit of inclusiveness all the way! There's enough negativity in day to day offline life as it is - this is almost always a very nice forum to be a part of, although I'd guess that most longstanding contributors may not quite realise how daunting it can be for a (not necessarily 'careworn media type') newcomer to feel included. I don't speak from personal experience, though I'm aware of one or two others who feel a tad overwhelmed by the erudition on view from 'the regulars' herein. Me, I'm enough of an 'ex-media type' not to feel small next to 'voices of experience', for want of a better expression, but if we were all standing around at a cocktail do I'm sure most of us would want to make sure wallflowers/new arrivals/people who don't seem to know too many others (yet) are included in the conversation.

It's more difficult online but... well, we should all - me included - try to be welcoming. I hope that doesn't sound sanctimonious - it's not meant to. I'm just recalling my first day at my current place of work, about five years back, and I can remember well to this day those who made welcoming gestures, however small, and those who made snidey remarks/no effort (thankfully by far the smaller number). These things make a lasting impression!

Robert Fripp often described King Crimson as a 'way of doing things' rather than a band; I think Heppo and Ellen have created, in the good ship Word and all its multifarious multi-media platforms, a 'way of being' or a 'place to be' rather than a magazine. It's a great achievement!

(And, for newcomers, whose first mention of King Crimson on this forum that may have been - fear not: there'll be many more along soon. There always are! I'm beginning to think it's probably the one exemption to the "we've already discussed this" dogma!)

Colin H I read your post with interest as I love football and even though you didnt take it bad it put me off repling to your post. These kind of posts are not exactly bulling but they do sometimes contain an element" wow arent I a clever bastard"element to them, which can be off putting to some like me who isnt to computer savvy or whose spelling is crap. Anyway I take comfort in the fact that there is always someone out there who is smarter than them usually Frazer Lewry! Ps if you have sky plus there is a brillant programme on anytme about the rivalry between Barca and Real

0
paintyface | 1 May 2009 - 12:08am

I like to think I'm fairly capable, but I sometimes get lost

in the high-brow, intellectual nature of the odd post; and perhaps even struggle to understand the numerous pop-culture references of yesteryear and dictionary induced opinions that certain, critically acclaimed, posters occasionally come up with. However, I'd rather I had to consult my own copy of the OED to understand what a "timbre" was, for example, rather than have to indulge in "BBC Blog" style posting in which we end up insulting each other simply because we can't agree on the greatest violin solo since 1931.

0
Tom | 1 May 2009 - 12:56am

There's no argument

The greatest violin solo since 1931 can be found on B*Witched's pop masterpiece, C'est La Vie

shane pacey | 1 May 2009 - 5:04am

haha (and to go slightly OT)

i HEARD that very word used in real life recently. Well, i say, 'real life', but it was more 'real time'.

I'd managed to hook up my playstation 3 to t'interwebulator and decided to go online for a game of some insane shooting game. God help us; it was like being a three year old on a small bike, with stabilisers, whilst the Tour de France pelaton went whizzing by.

Needless to say, I didn't last long, but I seemed to have been 'paired' with a chap going by the name of 'amayzingdude03'. Suffice it to say, after being blown to sweet oblivion a number of times, I could hear this dismembered voice - evidently my 'partner' was equipped with a headset thing - saying

"dude, we was completely pwned"

I couldn't respond, as i'm not equipped to, but was amazed. It's pronouncable. Sounds silly, but 'ver kids are saying it!

I've not been back since.

spinoza013 | 1 May 2009 - 10:32am

i dunno were you being slightly sarcastic

at the 'how exciting'; it's the weakness of purely text based communication, but i'm assuming you weren't!

Aye - it *is* kinda fascinating in a geeky kind of way that a whole new etymology is actually out there, but if it doesn't touch your world, you remain completely unaware of it.

I mean, however much we hate it, LOL is fairly mainstream and it does convey in a convenient shorthand three other words.

pwned and all that McGubbins is completely G to the E to the E to the K.

0
ivan | 1 May 2009 - 10:50am

No I wasn't

Yeah I'm often accused of Sarcasm...

No I'm genuinely interested in most things...This secret world of Hackers and computers is one from which I have been completely estranged.

Having some form of Attention deficiency I find it impossible to penetrate these worlds ... the level of concentration and actually giving a Toss required is too great for me. But i'm astounded by and drawn to secret groups and cliques as i'm a bit of an armchair anthropologist.

I struggle to even write co-herent posts most times.

0
spinoza013 | 1 May 2009 - 11:13am

What does "pwned" mean?

And how do you pronounce it...?

Pre-internet and text speak, I always remember being disgusted by Sounds (or was it Melody Maker?) journalists writing about "ver" Smiths or "ver" Stone Roses...what the f**k was that all about?

Back to the blog, I think the style of it does mean it is easy to get more repeat posts than other types of forum - what with it being limited to only a small amount of posts on the main page things do seem to get shoved off and lost "quickly".

I know it's easy to say always do a search or scroll through before posting something but often when you feel compelled to write it's spontaneous.

"owned" meaning to defeat.

"Great Quintessence track on the Slomo coverdisc"

That'd be 'Pearl & Bird', would it, Retro? There indeed many Great Quintessence Tracks in the world, all under-known, I suspect... And by the end of the year, hopefully, there will be many more when Hux Records' two double-disc 1969 and 1971 live Quintessence albums are brought blissfully into the sunlight... Roll on that day....

0
Colin H | 3 May 2009 - 5:28pm

That'll learn me....

And there's me thinking it was just a cheapskate throwaway line at the expense of the poster above me...
You are so right, Colin, severely underated and mocked for their all too easy to hare krishnacise. I love the few tracks I have, aquired to assess the mystique they offered to a teenage boy rifling thru record racks as he listened to "Just another band from L.A." and "Henry the Human Fly". Is there a decent "Best of" you can commend?

0
Retropath2 | 3 May 2009 - 8:36pm

"Is there a decent "Best of" you can commend?"

Tough one... There were 5 LPs - plus a couple of non-LP singles and an otherwise unavailable live track on an Island sampler - split between Island (first 3) & RCA (last 2). Universals 'Oceans Of Bliss' comp from 2003 is a decent dip into their catalogue (superceding the 90s pre-remastering 'Epitaph To Tomorrow') but I see from amazon that that 2003 comp is now going for £45 second hand! Sadly, there's never been a cross-catalogue best-of - the RCA albums are patchy but definitely have their moments. And personally I love a lot of frontman Phil Jones' recent revamps of old Quintessence tracks, released on the CDs 'Shiva Shankar' and 'Shiva's Quintessence'.

Best to go, if I were you, for the recentish (and remastered & non-LP bonus tracks) first or second albums proper, still available at c.£9 - 'In Blissful Company' or 'Quintessence'. And be careful you don't buy some unrelated modern band of same name (eg Finnish jazz band or a still different metal band, etc)...

The landscape of the typical internet message board...

...bears a passing comparison to the scenery in cartoons: Eventually it repeats itself. Like Wile E. Coyote, as some malfunctioning piece of Acme hardware sends him plummeting over the edge of the same overhanging cliff, long term contributors will eventually find themselves covering familiar ground. I can’t post here anymore without an overriding sense of déjà vu, that speaks of encroaching senility. Those who don’t learn from their browser history are doomed to repeat themselves.

My heart sinks when a new blogger starts a topic only to be met with a brusque ‘we’ve done that already.’ The unwritten subtext is that, lurking somewhere in the archives, is a 100+ post thread that they should have read first before adding their tuppence worth at the bottom, on the off-chance that some eagle-eyed reader might deign to glance over it.

My thinking is that unless said topic was raised within the last few months, there is no harm in it appearing in a new guise on the front page, where it is easily accessible and where new bloggers can form part of an ongoing live discussion, rather than adding a postscript to a thread that has run its course and is functionally deceased. We have discussed the greatest guitar solos many times in the past. We will no doubt do so again.

This blog being a democracy means that no one is under any obligation to respond to, or even to read a thread if they do not wish to. Furthermore if a new thread is surplus to requirements it will remain unanswered. A few days later it will be sliding down page three faster than a sub-par Morrissey single during its second week on the chart.

I have moderated many online communities. In most cases it’s a wonderful way of accessing your fellow internet users’ inner child - Sadly, not the wide-eyed innocent who views the world with a Van Morrison-esque wonder, but instead the turbulent two year old, who plants himself in the middle of one of the aisles in Sainsbury’s, and screams at the top of his voice because he’s been told that he can’t have a Milky Bar.

This blog is different in that people are generally respectful towards each other and manage to avoid making outright attacks. A bigger problem are those lazy online interactions – those curt, poorly-phrased responses that serve no real no purpose and would probably be better left unsaid .

Over time internet users gain a sense of ownership of the online communities where they post. This can manifest in strangely negative ways – surly treatment towards newcomers; giving the impression that there is an arbitrary set of rules that must be obeyed if you are to fit in.

In truth, the opinions and posts of someone who has been active on this board for 1 year and 28 weeks are worth no more than those written by the person who joined this morning. New members with their new ideas and new insights are the lifeblood of any online community that wishes to avoid stagnation. They shouldn’t be made to feel that what they write is constrained by a history in which they took no part.

Thanks for the post, backwards

It led me to view your profile and read the treatise "on" Sonic youth, essential reading for the adjacent and ongoing strand.
