Blimey, where did that go?

Vincent's picture

Am I mistaken, or has the thread on how the Massive is strangely unsympathetic to rioters and criminal opportunists despite our record collections, initiated at 7am this morning. just 'gone'? Interesting example of Stalinist controlling of the discourse if so...

Been gone

for about an hour.

Too much rage & random swearing ?

(not-guilty, guilty)

Alternatively

The author of the post deleted it. We haven't, AFAIK.

Aw Fraser...

I was feeling very smug about knowing all the HJHs and TMFTLs and then you chuck in AFAIK. Do tell please (I'm taking a flyer and guessing it's not Aretha Franklin's Artificially Intelligent Kneecap).

Cobweb Steve | 20 October 2011 - 2:20pm

Seems easier

just to type 'as far as I know'.

MyAmericanMate | 20 October 2011 - 2:38pm

In a similar vein...

... I always feel the need to point out that "WW2" takes longer to say than "World War 2."

And there's Bill Hicks' observation on the shortening of "July" to "Jul", i.e. "You gotta be in a real fuckin' hurry"...

Also 'world wide web'

is only three syllables, whereas saying 'w-w-w' is nine.

Good question

I read it this morning, got half way through a response & deleted it because I had to get to work. I just thought it had dropped off the updated column because of a lack of responses, Wh'appen?

I agree: learning to leave

I agree: learning to leave one's knee-jerk liberalism behind without becoming knee-jerk reactionary is an important part of becoming an adult. As is realising our pop-media heroes are not generally a good source of political or social insight given the responsibility-free, luxurious and hedonically irresponsible lives they sometimes lead.

1
Vincent | 20 October 2011 - 4:19pm

In my opinion

learning to leave one's knee-jerk liberalism behind without becoming knee-jerk reactionary

often people who show the first viewpoint in youth and also see "pop-media heroes" as gurus take the the second viewpoint in later life.

If the OP decided to remove it

I think we should respect that.

If he deleted it

then we haven't got much choice!

Dr Volume | 21 October 2011 - 3:08am

I didn't

see this thread, but isn't there an argument to say that the OP should be allowed to remove their post, but should not have the right to remove everybody else's comments (which I understand was probably not their intention)?

0
KDH | 20 October 2011 - 5:48pm

No, it should be up to the OP

Sometimes posts don't come out the way you want or expect them to. Because the comments relate to the original post, it makes sense the that OP should be able to take down the post and the comments. And I write as someone that made a particularly erudite and insightful post* on this one.

*possibly not true

0
Leedsboy | 20 October 2011 - 8:09pm

Can't say

I agree - I fully support the right of the OP to remove their comments (and name), but a simple title to the thread would allow everyone else's work to remain, and allow their views to be heard. Feels a little like censorship of views otherwise.
*Suppose the OP just didn't like the responses to their post, and that their motives for removing it were not because their post didn't come out the way they wanted it, but were to stop other's views being heard.
Then again, I suppose someone could just start a fresh thread on the subject, but not everyone wants to express the same opinion twice.

*not referring to this OP specifically, as I have no idea why it was removed.

0
KDH | 20 October 2011 - 8:01pm

Yep I deleted it

I realised from the first few responses that I hadn't expressed what I wanted to say very well. And the sharp-as-a-tack Massive made that very clear.

Also, the fridge had been addressed, Sauvignon Blanc had been selected and consumed.

After more than two years here and umpteen posts and opinions it's only the second time I've done this (the previous one was a far-too-personal post about my Dad's dementia, which I then addressed subsequently in a far more considered post which received very heart-warming responses).

Thanks for the support in posts above.

And I still reserve the right to say Tarkus is brilliant whenever I want OK?
