Blimey - The Website Looks A Bit Different

Fraser Lewry's picture

Important: if the site doesn't look as you think it probably should, you may need to to do a force reload (Control F5 in Internet Explorer, Shift + Ctrl + R in Firefox).

Eagle-eyed readers will notice that we've given the website a dusting down and a lick of paint, and suddenly it all looks a bit 2009 around here.

So what's different?

1) If you've uploaded a picture on your account page, it will appear next to your posts.

2) There's a clever voting thing at the foot of blog posts and comments, which enables you to anonymously approve of (or otherwise) those entries. We're not sure how useful this will be yet - at the moment it's there purely to encourage you give your contributions due care and consideration when posting. We may keep it, we may not.

3) See at the foot of the page? On the right hand side is a "tag cloud", which give a visual guide to the popularity of different subjects on the site - the bigger the lettering, the more popular the subject. Surprise surprise, it's currently The Beatles. When you add new blog entries to the site, you can tag them with relevant terms, and this will help shape the contents of the cloud.

There's a fair number of cosmetic changes as well, and we have other things planned too - including special privileges for Word subscribers that won't be available to other readers.

So watch this space, and let me know if anything breaks.

Note: I'm going to leave this post "pinned" to the top of the blog for a little bit, so any new entries will appear below it, at least for the time being.

New look

It looks good so far, and I'm looking forward to the special privileges (NB sp).

PS , scanning the new edition which plopped through my letter box today, and the pic above, I'm pleased to note that I'm not the only 'strawberry blond' who has lost some hair in the last few years. Unfortunately mine was involuntary.

Pilleus Jr | 10 September 2009 - 11:40pm

Help!!

I may be missing something with this new look, but how do I get on to view all the Blogs? Under the ols format there was a "Blog" icon at the top of the page, but this has now disappeared. I cab access the recently updated posts but not the full list

0
Avidfan | 11 September 2009 - 9:23am

Have you done the "Important" thing Fraser suggests?

Reload and all should be well. I had whopping ads obscuring all the content until I did it. Now it all makes sense.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 11 September 2009 - 9:58am

I've Ctrl F5-ed numerous

I've Ctrl F5-ed numerous times with no difference, but still have no icons, only The Word Logo and an ad at the top of the page. Anyone else having problems or is it just me?

0
Avidfan | 11 September 2009 - 10:42am

what brower are you using

the old version IE always did weird things to the site you may need to up grade.

0
Chris G | 11 September 2009 - 11:03am

Any chance

You could send me a screengrab? fraser at wordmagazine dot co dot uk.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 12:04pm

Sorry Fraser, but I'm not

Sorry Fraser, but I'm not sure how to send a screengrab - are you able to guide me? As you can see I'm not at all IT-literate (hence the original problem in all likelihood!!)

0
Avidfan | 14 September 2009 - 9:13am

Print Screen

On your keyboard, there should be a "print screen" button. It'll be top right somewhere, and it'll probably be shortened to "prt srn" or similar. Get the Word website on your screen and click this button. This will place a screengrab in your clipboard. Open up a Word document, and paste (ctrl + v) the grab into the document. Then send it to me.

Thanks.

0
Fraser Lewry | 14 September 2009 - 9:24am

if you are a pc user

simplest way is to open the page with the faulty layout and then press "prntscrn" button. Then open word and either click paste or the shortcut press "crtl" "v".
a picture should paste into word and you can email the doc to frasier.
If you are using vista you may have snip tool installed .
go to accessories and look for a scisssors icon this will let you highlight areas of the screen and save them as a jpg.

0
Chris G | 14 September 2009 - 9:24am

Screen grab sent

Fraser / Avidfan

I've emailed a screen grab this morning. Hope it helps.

David

0
Red Umpire | 14 September 2009 - 9:34am

Me too!!

I've done the forced reset, and everything's here (and looking lovely) except the 'menu bar' under "Intelligent life on planet rock", so I can't get to the Blog page (there's just a plain white bar of space.) The menu on the right and the stuff at the bottom of the page all looks to be complete... anything silly I'm doing wrong?

0
Metal Mickey | 16 September 2009 - 2:42pm

It's not you, it's me

See this point below.

0
Fraser Lewry | 16 September 2009 - 2:45pm

Nice Job Fraser

but go easy on the proposed extra features for subscribers, don't forget that it can actually be cheaper to buy Word in the shops outside the UK than it is to subscribe.

1
Pat Carty | 10 September 2009 - 11:42pm

It's a fair point

And one we're aware of - we're determined that nobody misses out too much through such a choice.

1
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 12:14am

Pat...

... do what all us Irish subscribers have learned to do, i.e. subscribe, then moan about the time delay. It shows we care even more :-)

2
Nicodemus | 11 September 2009 - 1:49am

I'm pleased that you took my request on board,

But when I posted 'Ok You Hipsters, Let's Have Some New' a few days ago, this was not what I was expecting.
That is why you did it, right Fraser?

0
ChaosandMorphine | 10 September 2009 - 11:56pm

Woah.....

That gave me a fright when I logged in just now.......but I'm not one to not accept change.

Like the cloud thing at the bottom though.

0
Otis J Watermelon | 11 September 2009 - 12:13am

But

Which button makes me a cup of tea?

Have a day off Fraser.

0
Beany | 11 September 2009 - 12:20am

Brill

Excellent stuff and this has convinced me once and for all to resubscribe. The new ish is waiting at my Edinburgh address. I propose roast camel with a side of ferret for Mr L.

0
jonnybrick | 11 September 2009 - 12:41am

Excellent

That's the spirit.

1
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 12:50am

Fine work Fraser

And, not wishing to increase your workload still further, but when are you going to introduce a recipe column? I'm buggered if I know what to do with this shank of wildebeeste. Especially as I'm a vegetarian.

Seriously, it's a column whose time has come.

1
Molesworth | 11 September 2009 - 8:23am

wonder if ...

The Beatles and Bob Dylan will remain permanently emboldened in the tag cloud thing?

Looks grand though.

0
inky miss | 11 September 2009 - 12:48am

Just copped that,,,

... there is a BOB DYLAN cloud and another significant DYLAN one. If you add 'em together does this mean Bob is the most popular post topic?

1
Nicodemus | 11 September 2009 - 2:04am

Yay! Tag Clouds!

...Now will everyone please tag properly :-)

1
nicktf | 11 September 2009 - 12:48am

nice one

everyone should do that forced reload my version looked awful a mix of old and new ctrl f5 sorted it out loods nice and sharp now.

0
Chris G | 11 September 2009 - 1:01am

vote rigging

tried to vote on couple of posts and whether I vote up or down it say "you are not allowed to vote" think I'm signed in properly. Bound to be teething issues so no biggy.

0
Chris G | 11 September 2009 - 1:17am

Top Job Fraser

Looks excellent!

1
Stephen Cadman | 11 September 2009 - 1:40am

Just had a few cans of Guinness and logged on..

... got a bit disoriented but am now getting my bearings.

Good work Fraser, but how the hell will Mark Ellen cope?

0
Nicodemus | 11 September 2009 - 1:44am

Looks good -

Will take a bit of getting used to, but I like it!

But why does it say I'm not allowed to vote?

Looking forward to seeing the special subscriber features...

And I like the tweaks to the Word logo (top left) is that a new logo or just a website version?

Thanks Fraser, good job!

0
Nick | 11 September 2009 - 1:54am

A Chrome user writes

Ctrl-F5 sorts everything out with Chrome too. (Well, except not being allowed to vote, but I'm sure that's a general buggy not-working thingy you call a "known issue".)

Otherwise, neat, neat, neat and works a treat. (Oh, and I can't spell [looks it up] "privilege", either. Never could, never will.)

0
Archie Valparaiso | 11 September 2009 - 2:22am

errr what voting?

and a minir criticism- it is a rather long scroll down to the clouds with most of the take up being a large tower ad to subscribe to Word

I tend to miss stuff below the bottom of the screen

-2
Junior Wells | 11 September 2009 - 2:35am

Good work...

Thumbs up!
Can you tinker with site at least once a week please? I got loads of stuff done & had an early night!

0
Adman | 11 September 2009 - 6:20am

I don't like change...

...I'm frightened...

1
Futurenoir | 11 September 2009 - 6:53am

looks good

but I'm not allowed to vote either (I am signed in)

-1
el hombre malo | 11 September 2009 - 7:04am

I'm working on this...

Bear with me.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 7:36am

OK

Baaaaaa!

Did it work?

0
Beany | 11 September 2009 - 9:09am

Update

It should be working now.

0
Barry Womm | 11 September 2009 - 8:00am

all working now, thanks

*inserts big smiley*

2
el hombre malo | 11 September 2009 - 8:10am

Well done

It's always good to keep your website moving. The changes all seem good to me.

0
Lunaman | 11 September 2009 - 8:02am

The best addition...

is the arrows under the comments boxes. They will make following threads much easier.

I also like the thread cloud... it is strangely beautiful.

And a nod of respect to whoever came up with the 'New adventures in Lo-Fi' slogan for the podcast. Brilliant.

My only quibble would be with the colour scheme... blue and orange is a bit wearing on the eyes.

1
Patrick Crowther | 11 September 2009 - 8:54am

Whoops

Sorry Patrick. I just 'negged' your comment by clicking on the down arrow to see what it did! Don't be offended I'm just a fool.

1
Red Umpire | 11 September 2009 - 9:07am

Yet another example of how polite people are around here...

thanks David... I hadn't even noticed!

In fact I am looking forward to watching the number box zooming into the minus when I start my 'What is Geddy Lee's finest Taurus bass pedal moment?' thread.

Looking at the number box, it looks like it can only accommodate single numbers... what happens if 267 people want to say my thread is rubbish?

-13
Patrick Crowther | 11 September 2009 - 9:23am

Patrick,

I've just "negged" your comment to avoid the rush for your bass pedal thread. Hope you understand ;-)

4
nigelthebald | 11 September 2009 - 9:30am

Keep 'em coming!

;-)

-1
Patrick Crowther | 11 September 2009 - 9:33am

I tried negging twice

once for Geddy and once for Lee. But you can't do no double negatives.

Negging: word of the day.

2
Captain Underpants | 11 September 2009 - 12:04pm

I've posited once for bass pedals

Come on Taurus, make my day

0
Molesworth | 11 September 2009 - 12:36pm
Gauntlet | 11 September 2009 - 1:36pm

Aha!

Suddenly I understand the references to "voting" * - it's an ill wind...

You get a 'pos' for the enlightening foolishness, David :-)

*Oversleeping always leaves me feeling groggy.

0
nigelthebald | 11 September 2009 - 9:21am

Another Nay to the Orange

The blue colour which emerges when you roll over the 'Recently Updated' column is much nicer. If it was up to me I'd switch them around. While I'm on a neg roll, I don't care for the font either.
Oh, what the heck, sorry Fraser, I know you're not liking this, but the cosmetic changes feel like change for the sake of change. Maybe in a week I'll love it, but right now if you were showing me two concepts for my new website, this and the 'old' one, I'd go for the old one. Despite the claim of going all 2009, this design, to me, looks dated compared to the old one.

1
ChaosandMorphine | 11 September 2009 - 9:13am

I think you're right to mention the typeface...

it was better before.

I don't want to come across too negative about these changes... I think it is fairly obvious from how much time I spend on here just how much I love this site... but if I think something didn't need altering I will say so.

1
Patrick Crowther | 11 September 2009 - 9:20am

I don't remember

voting on what colours we wanted on the website. Surely there could have been a reality-TV-show-on-Living made out of this, but instead of a 5-hour fix it would have lasted 14 weeks.

Is there not a Beatles font you could have used?

0
Beany | 11 September 2009 - 9:25am

The orange is a bit too 'Holland fans at the World Cup' for me..

I feel I should be changing my name to Patryck van der Crowther.

0
Patrick Crowther | 11 September 2009 - 9:29am

I like the orange

That's all.

0
David Hepworth | 11 September 2009 - 9:35am

What,

that's all you like? 'Kin hell man, do you know how hard Fraser's worked on this? At least pretend to like the cloud.

1
ChaosandMorphine | 11 September 2009 - 9:56am

Orange colour good, body face er, less so

Can't Fraser turn it back to our default preference so we can choose what face we read in? The new one looks fine for headers, but wodges of text in a fussy-looking sans face like this do my eyes in a bit, to be honest.

1
Archie Valparaiso | 11 September 2009 - 9:56am

I'm just glad

that links aren't underlined in a back-to-the-old-skool mid-90s web 1.0 stylee.

Colourwise I was initially a little confused as the new orange/blue combo is a direct reversal of the colour scheme on my own website, where blue links turn orange when you hover over/click them. Either way around it's an attractive combo.

BTW, here at the day job we're still forced to use ye olde gas-powered Internet Explorer, and the revised styling looked all over the shop at first - the Word logo was hidden by the play.com ad, the tag cloud, Word social and About Us bits were all centred, and member photos were HUGE and aligned to the left, etc. Then I read a comment elsewhere on this thread re. hitting Ctrl + F5 to sort it. I tried hitting that key combo, and it worked a treat. Now it's all looking lovely. Well done that man.

0
Four Eyes | 11 September 2009 - 10:06am

The font is trebuchet

It's much easier to read than the old font. That's why it was chosen.

3
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 11:02am

Puzzled

Wasn't the old font whatever our browser's serif default was? It was for me with Firefox, IE and Chrome. Now I get Trebuchet whether I like it or not, and I don't much. It's fine for the headers, but I don't like it at all as a body face, what with all those curly descenders and all. It looks like a very swotty child's attempt to write clearly. If it really must be a sans font, can't you be a bit less adventurous and go with something simple and proven like Helvetica, Univers, Gill (which comes packed with Mac OS, I think) or even mutter-mutter Arial mutter-mutter?

Although I'd be happiest if you gave us back the option of choosing our own preference for online reading, frankly (or perhaps for some Franklin Gothically).

0
Archie Valparaiso | 11 September 2009 - 11:43am

We've never given you that choice

Georgia was always stipulated in the css. And I think that trebuchet is simple and proven - it was designed for the screen, it's highly legible, it's one of the system fonts that's always been bundled with OS X and Windows (unlike Gill and Univers, which are packed with less than 10% of systems) and, alongside Verdana and Helvetica, is probably one of the first fonts designers turn to. If I switched, it would be to Verdana, but I want to live with this a while.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 11:58am

For what it's worth

I like Trebuchet as well, although I didn't mind Georgia either. In general I quite like the new style. The main thing is that it's clean, logically structured and as minimalist as realistically possible.

1
DougieJ | 11 September 2009 - 1:35pm

Ha!

I've had Georgia set as my default for a while. I thought I was getting an exclusive, tailor-made display. Chiz.

I just think it looks more like "proper writing". No big deal. Although a nice look is always that - nice - content over form has always been one of this site's biggest pluses, so I'll shut up now.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 11 September 2009 - 1:58pm

Georgia

was chosen originally because it's almost identical to Millertext, which is one of the fonts used a lot in the magazine, but I don't think serif fonts work so well on the web, and I've never liked it on this website. Others will think differently - beauty is in the eye etc etc - and if you've got it set as your default font, then I'm clearly not going to win you over with any of those new-fangled screen fonts.

1
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 3:20pm

I like trebuchet

There's a brilliant one at Warwick Castle that shoots fireballs!

2
Adman | 11 September 2009 - 12:57pm

Swish

Looks great, Fraser, and I'm more than impressed with your mad web skills and html/CSS jiggery pokery.

One small gripe though: unless I've missed it, there's no link to take you from the homepage to the blog, or back to the main blog when you're on a topic.

Other than that, consider my cap well and truly doffed

0
Joe R | 11 September 2009 - 8:40am

Weird

Are you not seeing the "blog" and "home" links in the horizontal blue navigation bar, or am I getting confused?

Clicking on the Word logo top left will also take you to the homepage.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 8:46am

Hmmm

Horizontal blue navigation bar you say? I can only see the very bottom of it, the rest is obscured by... er, just plain white actually.

I can just about make out the search box and the button next to it. I'm browsing at work though and internal security/firewall settings sometimes make things go a bit loco.

0
Joe R | 11 September 2009 - 9:03am

Same for me

I have the same issue. Having refreshed the screen, I can just about make out the bottom of the navigation bar and search box but am unable to click on anything in the bar.

0
Red Umpire | 11 September 2009 - 9:11am

What browser are you using?

If you answer IE6, I shall fill with mirth.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 11:03am

Don't make me laugh

as if I'd be using IE6, ha! I'll just check what browser my company uses and then we'll see that what I'm actually using is... oh...

So, The Beatles are pretty good, eh?

0
Joe R | 11 September 2009 - 1:05pm

All fine at home...

...where I use Firefox. The office may well be on IE6.

{blushes}

0
Red Umpire | 11 September 2009 - 2:22pm

Ahh well

I should refer you to a post further down the page. As I say there, I'll try and figure something out, but apologies for the inconvenience in the meantime.

Any chance you could send me a screengrab, if you know how to? fraser at wordmagazine dot co dot uk.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 2:28pm

Hang on

that wouldn't be you hyperlinking to somewhere else on the page, eh Fraser? Some people don't like that I heard...

Though I know how to do screengrabs, can't get to my personal emails at work and I'm not sure "The Man" would be too impressed with me using my work address, sorry!

0
Joe R | 11 September 2009 - 2:31pm

Fair point

And yes, I'm contradicting myself, but there's no keyboard shortcut that would have taken you to that point on the page. Sometimes it's unavoidable.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 2:44pm

I know

I think in forums in general, it's sometimes difficult to follow the thread of conversation due to the layout. This site is good with the indentations - it's not perfect but I can't think of a better way of doing it.

0
Joe R | 11 September 2009 - 2:51pm

screen grab

I'll see what I can do when I'm back in the office on Monday, Fraser. Cheers

0
Red Umpire | 11 September 2009 - 3:37pm

Thanks

Much appreciated.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 3:38pm

I have just peered into my crystal ball...

and seen the word 'Supertramp' rising majestically from the tag cloud like a beacon of hope. One day, one day...

0
Patrick Crowther | 11 September 2009 - 8:51am

I've just watched the latest Apple iPod Keynote

For future web updates is there any chance we could get Mr Hepworth into a black polo neck and announce the new features on stage a la Steve Jobs? It would make a great podcast.

0
Handsome.P.Wonderful | 11 September 2009 - 9:20am

I'd be up for that...

just as long as he doesn't use the phrase 'The Word community' and start banging on about his shiny new liver.

0
Patrick Crowther | 11 September 2009 - 9:22am

That's

iLiver...

2
Adman | 11 September 2009 - 12:59pm

A slight aside...

... but with the return of Steve Jobs after his health problems, I was half expecting them to announce the "worlds thinnest CEO"......

2
chrisf | 11 September 2009 - 5:45pm

Pedantry warning

it's not a black polo neck, actually. According to Wikipedia:

"He usually wears a black long-sleeved mock turtleneck made by St. Croix, Levi's 501 blue jeans, and New Balance 991 sneakers."

-2
DougieJ | 11 September 2009 - 1:38pm

The Word’s new “Figure-Fixing Wow Frock!”

This week’s Look magazine is trumpeting “106” of the new season’s “Figure-Fixing Wow Frocks!”
And it seems the dear old Word Blog has snapped one up.
Looks lovely dear.
But give those “Hot New Fierce Heels” a swerve eh pet. They look a bit tarty.

0
Richard Lowe | 11 September 2009 - 9:22am

I like.....

I like very much.

I've missed the share button for some time now.

Yes indeed.... Good work or as Young Mr Grace would say

"You've all done very well"

Why did my picture not

Why did my picture not appear by the post

0

Duh! its just the original

Duh! its just the original post not comments....Concentrate!

0

Until I pressed F5

Fraser's gurning fizzog was a large appendage atop of the page. If you are having the same problem I suggest you press F5 NOW! Think of the children...

0
Beany | 11 September 2009 - 9:28am

Editing posts/comments

Can you edit your own posts or comments now? Sorry if it's obvious, I'm not the most web literate.

0
Pilleus Jr | 11 September 2009 - 9:39am

I think it might be as before

that you can edit comments only until someone else comments on your comment after which you can't (stops people changing stuff afterwards I suppose and destroing the menaing of those who follow on). You've always been able to update a post you intiated.

0
Chris G | 11 September 2009 - 10:03am

That explains it

Thanks Chris.

0
Pilleus Jr | 11 September 2009 - 10:05am

Like the extra features - hate the font

It's somehow lost the elegance that the previous serif font and colour scheme gave it and the headings of the posts are getting lost - they used to stand out in bold. The voting buttons are too prominent - I'd vote straight away to get rid of them.

Hope this is a work in progress...

0
poolhallrichard | 11 September 2009 - 10:07am

The font is staying

Simply because it's easier to read. Fair point on the prominence of the buttons, though. I'll live with them a little, but may make them less bright.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 11:28am

a designer disagrees

the serif is easier on the eye when reading large amounts of text and since it's primarily a text based medium I'm struggling.
I logged on at home, via FireFox, first thing and was frankly shocked at the layout, at work over lunch I logged on via Safari and it had a bit of both - nice serif with eh... 'improved' layout.

feel free to ban me

0
James Blast | 11 September 2009 - 4:05pm

Serif fonts

are easier on the eye in print, absolutely, but not on your computer, where reading behaviour is different - you read at 30-50% of your normal reading speed, for instance - and where the screen handles text differently than paper.

Online, sans fonts are better than serif when their size is reduced, which is important, as people set their browsers to render text at a large number of +/- font sizes, and they tend to retain their appeal across different platforms and browsers, something that serif fonts don't manage - they don't resize gracefully. On the web, you also work at a much lower DPI than in print - and some of the serif finishing strokes simply don't render as well as they do on the page.

If you're getting a mix of both layouts, force a reload.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 4:24pm

Yup

another vote for getting rid of the voting buttons. All too cluttered. Can we get rid of the 'posting photos' too? They all make the page unnecessarily busy and fussy.

-1
eddie g | 11 September 2009 - 11:34am

Hate to be the one who carps...

... but doesn't the colour scheme make it all look a bit 90s?

2
Gatz | 11 September 2009 - 10:18am

Much easier on the eye

I'm a fan.

1
Five-Centres | 11 September 2009 - 11:05am

But Still No...

"Back To Top" button at the bottom of a long thread ?

0
ainsley009 | 11 September 2009 - 11:13am

I don't like them

With my usability head on, I think it's better to steer away from providing links to perform actions that are better done on the keyboard - you could have a thousand different sites placing the link in a thousand different places, or you could you the same, consistent keyboard shortcut for each of those websites.

Also, on the web, people generally have a clear mental model for a hypertext link: that it should bring up a new page. Within-page links violate this model and may cause confusion.

What might this be?

Pardon my ignorance, but how does one go about leaping back to the top of a page by using a keyboard?

0
ceepee | 11 September 2009 - 1:53pm

The magic buttons

Home - goes to the top of the page
End - goes to the bottom of the page
Page Up/Down - scrolls up/down the page, effectively a screen's height with each press

Have a "big up your comment" in way of appreciation.

1
ceepee | 11 September 2009 - 2:14pm

What I really like

is how the "recently updated" box is now visible when a page loads.

All that scrolling was getting to me...

0
nigelthebald | 11 September 2009 - 11:31am

Superb

I like this.
I have to say I never liked the old font very much.
Will new posts that spill over into a 2nd page now be highlighted?

1
Carl Parker | 11 September 2009 - 12:30pm

No

That one's a right bugger.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 12:41pm

what about

increasing the maximum comments per page to 300? I'm sure you have the stats as to how many posts go over 250 but stay under 300. Would it be worth doing?
(After a short break, It's all starting to grow on me. Apart from the Orange.)

0
ChaosandMorphine | 11 September 2009 - 2:42pm

It's a balancing act

We could increase the limit, but then posts containing a lot of YouTube videos can grind some people's computers to to a near-halt. As it is, very few posts reach that kind of number, so while it's annoying when it happens, at least it doesn't happen often.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 5:47pm

Shiny

Liking the new look. It shows that people over the age of 30 can still be aesthetically minded like us younguns.

One minor point, but will pictures turn up at every comment, or just main article point, as it would be nice to see everybody, but not everyone writes blog entries.

Just a thought...

0
badger_king | 11 September 2009 - 12:51pm

Just on main posts

It would look too cluttered otherwise.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 12:59pm

Bah

I'm on IE6 and due to work restrictions I can't upgrade to IE7 or 8 - so I can't access the blog tab.

I guess I'll see you all when my office installs IE8

0
Chimney Singing... | 11 September 2009 - 1:18pm

Hmmm

I'll have someone look at this, to see if we can find a resolution.

Sadly, IE6 remains the one browser that ignores the standards that every other browser now adheres to. It's a brute, but your IT people aren't doing you any favours by not allowing upgrades - and I'd be willing to wager that none of them are using it themselves.

Meanwhile, I guess you can bookmark the blog, or drag the link to your toolbar.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 September 2009 - 1:26pm

That's an idea

Thanks for replying, Fraser.

But how do I do that though - can you post the link please?

Otherwise - it's all good

Aesthetically speaking, I'm going to make them less prominent. Thematically, we'll see how it goes. If a good number of people find them useful, they'll stay. If they don't, they won't. It's an experiment.

As a web monkey myself

albeit one who didn't know how to use the keyboard to jump to the top of the page (see post above) I'm all too aware of the phenomenon of receiving requests as soon as I make any changes to my site. I don't know why it is but as soon as I "improve" things it seems to prompt lots of further suggestions. Some of these are good and I consider them, some are good but have already been discounted and some are unworkable, of minority appeal or pointless.

That said, I have a few suggestions/requests/questions?

1. How about a permanent link to all the Word staff and Massive generated Spotify playlists? I often feel the need for a soundtrack to my work but can't think what to listen to, so a playlist generated by people whose tastes I broadly share would be just the thing.

2. The "Create content" button/page seems to suggest that the merest possibility may once have been considered that content other than blog posts could be created and posted. What might these have been? Were the Massive to have been allowed to submit their own articles for example?

0
ceepee | 11 September 2009 - 2:55pm

Suggest away

1. It might be difficult to manage - simply in terms of updating - but I'll see if I can figure out a nice clean way of doing something along those lines.

2. You're right about it not being an ideal phrase, and ideally it would just read "write new blog post" or similar, but that string is coded into the software's core files, which I'm loathe to change, simply because it makes updating more difficult.

I preferred the old blog site

It was much easier on the eye and easier to read than this

-3
Uncle Wheaty | 11 September 2009 - 8:53pm

This is doing my eyes in Fraser...!

Not sure if it is my age, eyesight or the 4 pints of Staropramen but it's all going a bit fuzzy what with the orange and the blue buttons.

I don't think the voting thing is worthwhile, it kind of detracts from the main body of writing and wouldn't it be better (or more fun) if it wasn't anonymous?!

I like the popular tags bit but I was more than happy with the last lot of tweaks you did on the old site - the improved tracking, favourites bits, I found that really useful and was quite satisfied.

Anyway, hate to live up to my "retro" name by wishing for a bit of "old" already, maybe it will be good to live with it for a few days and see if it grows on me.

Retro Man | 11 September 2009 - 9:03pm

1
James Blast | 11 September 2009 - 10:08pm

This is much better.

Big improvement.

0
Pete | 12 September 2009 - 1:12am

only thing I would

add is I had to magnify the page to 125% to make it easier to read on my laptop. I like the voting buttons think they may be good for post which are information posts ie this doc is on bbc4 tonight which don't need a reply but you want to thank the poster for the heads up.
Lastly a spell checker for posts would be nice i don't see why I have to think up weak puns and type them correctly too!

0
Chris G | 12 September 2009 - 1:48am

Your browser

Probably has a spellchecker - Firefox has one, Safari has one, and I believe you can get some kind of add-on for Internet Explorer.

Prosaic, tech question

Nice work Fraser, tricky changing a successful site.

I'm a regular, if infrequent poster, but I'd probably engage more if I could track stuff that interests me - i.e. blogs in which I participate. So, how do I set up RSS feeds that give me this:

- one that gives me all posts to any blog I've started

- another that gives me all posts to any blog to which I've contributed?

I know I can get it if I go to Track, but I want to subscribe to it from the RSS reader on my phone.

0
Bigsby | 12 September 2009 - 9:48am

RSS

Each blog page has it's own feed, so that's pretty straightforward - the feed for this page, for instance, is http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/crss/node/10679. As for setting it up, just do it the way you normally would - in Firefox this means clicking on the RSS logo in the address bar. Not sure about your phone, but there will be an option somewhere to subscribe.

0
Fraser Lewry | 12 September 2009 - 10:47am

Thanks, but not quite what I meant

What I mean (maybe not what I said) is that I would value one feed that always, automatically, brings me updates to any blogs I've started.

And another one that brings me updates to any blog to which I've added a post.

i.e. I don't want to have to remember to subscribe to individual pages.

0
Bigsby | 21 September 2009 - 1:38pm

although it's very early days,

the voting button does seem rather irrelevant, and little used in the majority of posts.

-10
bargepole | 12 September 2009 - 11:40am

I entirely agree

The arrows enable a ya-boo-sucks response and while the up arrow is useful for a quick "me too", the down arrow seems to encourage sniping without visibility or rationale.

Orange...

Sorry if someone's already said this. A small complaint, I'm afraid - I'm finding the orange text difficult to read, especially the "recently updated" etc columns down the right hand side. OK, I am 53 years old and I am also probably due for a new pair of specs, but I still think you've chosen a particularly indistinct colour.

0
Roy Levy | 12 September 2009 - 3:28pm

Come to think of it...

It's the orange against the grey.

0
Roy Levy | 12 September 2009 - 3:32pm

I'll lighten the background colour. Thanks.

0

I quite like the grey background in the comments/reply box, any chance you can use this background on the main Blog page, or put some sort of colour on the header or more space between each Blog post?

Just a thought!

0
Retro Man | 14 September 2009 - 3:27pm

Oh deary me

I prefer the old site. As soon as I get used to something it changes. Grumble, shuffle, huff 'n' puff. Pah ! I'm going to rent an ear trumpet at pretend to be deaf from now on.

0

it still doesn't work for me either

we'll just have to keep "Grumble, shuffle, huff 'n' puff" on man.

For all the reasons I've listed before.

0
Fraser Lewry | 14 September 2009 - 7:34pm

No, I'm back where I came in

Don't like it.
There have been a lot of dissenting voices Fraser, any chance of the users, ie us, having a say in all this?
Maybe you could canvass opinion as to whether we prefer the new or old look. After all, it is the section of the site which is 'for us', no?

-5
ChaosandMorphine | 14 September 2009 - 7:25pm

I'm sorry you don't like it

But we're not going back to the old design. It was slower to load, more database-intensive, harder to read, and not as clean (design-wise) as it should gave been. I've been involved in enough website redesigns over the years to know the regulars always hate updates and, to be frank, we're staggered how well this redesign has been received overall. Believe me, it's unusual.

8
Fraser Lewry | 14 September 2009 - 7:50pm

I like it, Fraser,

but tell me: what happens if we have a similar occurrence to the Andy Kershaw/fish puns incident? Is the black border penetrable?

0
nigelthebald | 14 September 2009 - 7:57pm

I guess...

We'll find out when we get there... and yes, I know that's not much of an answer.

0
Fraser Lewry | 14 September 2009 - 8:00pm

But Fraser,

we rely on you to know this stuff.

Still - small mercies department - at least you know it wasn't much of an answer...

:-)

0
nigelthebald | 14 September 2009 - 8:07pm

Anyone else

Think the orange and blue buttons at the bottom of a comment box are a bit Dominos Pizza??

4
masked tortilla | 15 September 2009 - 7:45pm

For Fraser and other designers/ techies

This is an interesting piece on process behind the brilliant redesign of the NPR site in the states.
http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/case-study-npr-org

1
PaddyH | 14 September 2009 - 10:37pm

That's how to do a redesign.

Visually, It's everything this site should be, but isn't.

-3
ChaosandMorphine | 15 September 2009 - 9:30am

I'm curious

In what way?

0
Fraser Lewry | 15 September 2009 - 9:32am

I like the npr site a lot

but its worth remembering that in terms of funding, donations and support, they're several millions miles ahead of The Word. Currently they're running an ad "Support for npr is provided by Visa". Once Visa divvy up a few quid to The Word, I think we've all got more cause to moan about the podcast sound quality, the site and the proofreading of the mag...

Not that we'll stop moaning, nor should we, because I'd like to think 90% plus of it is constructive, and I think it feeds in. We do it because we care. Which probably doesn't make it any less personally hurtful for those on the wrong end of it.

As far as the redesign goes, I can't see a lot to complain about, though I'm not keen on anonymous voting on posts personally. Could it all be better? Probably. Could it be worse? Infinitely.

On the resources available, I think it does a bloody great job, and I raise my hat in salutation to Fraser.

2
Molesworth | 15 September 2009 - 9:50am

Fair play, Fraser

I also think we have to look at what the NPR site was trying to achieve - more interconnectivity, greater integration with the blogosphere, trying to dip a tentative toe in the link economy, making sense of the dwindling importance of news for the US PSB model.
This site is something different and I think regardless of how it looks, it achieves a connection with the audience brilliantly.
Although, I'll *never* like Trebuchet, as I am a font Nazi. But that's my problem and not Fraser's.

-1
PaddyH | 15 September 2009 - 10:00am

why do people

have to stick "Nazi" after everything to show they hate something it far far over the top (I know about the seinfeld connection) to express a distaste for for type face.

0
Chris G | 15 September 2009 - 11:56am

Clarification

BTW: Fraser, I wasn't complaining about the new look and using the NPR as a template. Just thought you might enjoy it. I have been on enough print redesigns to know that most nay sayers eventually come to enjoy a new look. Content is king after all?

0
PaddyH | 15 September 2009 - 9:55am

Seriously?

I think you're a little late to be asking that question.

-1
ChaosandMorphine | 15 September 2009 - 10:04am

I'm genuinely curious

Mainly because our new design has far more in common with the NPR site than our old site did: sans fonts for body text, borders around content boxes, the extended footer, user images next to posts, text based navigation as opposed to images, even the basic colour scheme. I'm already made changes to the new design based on what people have said in this thread, so if you could tell me specifically what it is you like about the NPR site, it might well be useful.

0
Fraser Lewry | 15 September 2009 - 10:11am

Even rhetorically?

Even rhetorically?

0
PaddyH | 15 September 2009 - 10:06am

This is all getting a bit technical...so

can you highlight each main Blog entry with this pinky grey colour too? It would be much easier on the eye.

Oh, and maybe put the default colour on the (unecessary?) arrow buttons as grey as it appears on your own post, it's far less distracting than the blue.

Right, that's my constructive criticism done.

0
Retro Man | 15 September 2009 - 10:32am

Tweakage

1) No. I want to keep original posts and comments visually separated. But I'll play around with some lighter greys and see if I can find something that works.

2) Yes, I'll do this eventually. I want to leave them as they are for the time being to get people used to them, and to see if people will use them. If I make them more discreet right away, it'll be less revealing.

0
Fraser Lewry | 15 September 2009 - 10:37am

Help needed Fraser

I have tried to vote on a recent comment but nothing happens when I click on the arrows. Also, my first attempt at a thread was a none too flattering one regarding the Led Zep chaps. Not on the tag thingy. Was it nobbled ?

0
RobertC | 15 September 2009 - 5:15pm

You need to be logged in to vote

But sometimes, even when you are, the number doesn't change, but it is counted - if you refresh the page it'll appear.

The reason your Led Zeppelin doesn't appear in the tag cloud is because you didn't tag it - when you write a new post, you add the relevant tags in the field provided. I've tagged it for you now.

0
Fraser Lewry | 15 September 2009 - 5:21pm

Thanks there

What a fuss. I think it's fine. We'll all get used to it soon enough. Don't people HATE change? It's ridiculous.

1

People do hate change

But it's natural. You're replacing something that's familiar with something that isn't. Instinctively, you feel less at home than you used to.

Have no idea (yes another non techie) how to get to the Blogs. In the old version there were nice little things on top that you clicked and have now disappeared. i'm sure youre fed up with this comment but i've tried refresh / reload to no effect. What do I do apart from giving up?

0

You're using Internet Explorer 6?

It's a display problem caused by that software's lack of compliance with the standards adhered to by every other browser. I'm working on a solution, but it might not be in place for as few weeks. If you can switch to a better browser (Firefox, or IE 7 or 8), that should fix it. If you can't, bear with us, apologies for the inconvenience, and you might be best-served by book-marking http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/blog

If you're using IE 8 and the site is displayed with clear errors, try turning on IE 8's Compatibility View by clicking the icon to the right of the address bar that looks like a broken piece of paper. This will roll back IE 8 to render and display web pages as IE 7 does. That may fix display errors for you.

Weird Scenes Inside the Word Mine

I click on regular faves via the Track function, more and more I am not being directed straight to the latest post. It happened once in the first week, it's happening most of the time now.

0
James Blast | 18 September 2009 - 7:46pm

Weird

That's not a design issue, and nothing's changed that should affect this. I'll take a look when I get back.

0
Fraser Lewry | 20 September 2009 - 3:57pm

Shall I tell you what pisses me of?

Shall I? OK, I will then. It's when I want to see the new posts in a thread and I click on the thread title by mistake and then go back and click on the "xx new posts" link but they've all gone because I've already clicked on the thread title, so there are, as far as the computers are concerned, no new posts. Because I've already seen them. Except I haven't.

That's what pisses me off, and it's all my own fault.
