Black Grape
Posted by Chimney Singing... on 10 February 2010 - 11:39am.
Is anyone else planning to go to see 'Black Grape' (well, Shaun, Kermit and Danny Saber) on April Fool's Day?
Memories of average to poor Happy Mondays reunions are fresh in my mind...but there's some great material there

Black grape honestly!
really Black Grape are you sure? Did they have more tunes other than there eponymous song? Saw the Mondays a few times always mixed bag of either storming or shambolic (the latter not in a good way) but anyway good luck .
Reading Festival 96
Black Grape were the headliners on the Saturday night. I was there with the lovely Scottish Mel, who shall forever be known as the girl that got away. Black Grape that night were tight, funky and quite possibly the best live performance I've ever seen. At one point the whole festival appeared to be doing the House Of Pain dance from Jump Around (yeah, just jumping up and down). The whole field in unison. Mel and me ended up knee deep in mud. Which was nice!
What was most surprising were how tight the band actually were. I'd seen the Mondays a few times and they could be hit and miss. But this was superb. I shouldn't have been too surprised, there was only a cat's whisker between the Grape and what the Stereo MCs had done a couple of years before.
Now, would I want to see them now...the answer to that is probably no. They're probably best left where they were, alongside the first Tricky album, Underworld singing lager lager lager and the memories of the girl that got away!
They were great.......
Saw them at Brixton on the "It's Great When You're Straight" tour and they were awesomely tight and terrifically funky. Danny Saber's influence must have shone through.
I can't get excited about a Black Grape re-union though. Shaun still paying the taxman?
No thanks...
...I'd rather eat my own ears.
Black Grape
I enjoyed the first album and saw them live in support of the second. I also watched The Grape Tapes documentary about 30 times.
All good fun but best left in the past.
The Grape Tapes
is possibly the finest music film of all time

"Get Higher"
Believe it or not, as part of the Best of Shine 1997 compilation, Black Grape's "Get Higher" was one of the first songs to get me properly into music. I'd been interested vaguely in music since Blur's "Charmless Man". But since hearing that compilation I was hooked.
Interesting news that they're playing some reunion shows, but judging by Shaun's vocals on the last Happy Mondays album, its not worth expecting much.
On April Fool's Day you say?
Hmmm...
