Bit of a long shot but: Dunwich Dynamo, anyone?

Rosbif's picture

Tomorrow is a big day for foolhardy cyclists: it's the Dunwich Dynamo. What's one of those, I hear you ask. It's a bike ride from London Fields to Dunwich, on the Suffolk coast. About 115 miles, starting at 9.00. PM, that is. "We ride into the dawn" say the organisers (not that there's that much organisation).

Erm, is anyone else doing it this year? I'm attempting it for the first time. Please pray on my behalf for (a) no rain and (b) a south-westerly tail wind.

You're very...

... brave. Good luck. I hope there's a nice cup of tea waiting for you in Dunwich.

Good Luck!

I did this ride back in the 90s when it was organised by Mosquito Bikes (I think).

Once you get out of London there's some lovely countryside and riding through it at night is an experience you won't forget.

I'm sure you know this already but don't forget a couple of spare innertubes and the correct size allen keys for cranks etc as bike things have a habit of coming loose at the most inconvenient time.

They used to have a cooked breakfast waiting for you at the other end, hope they still do!

Once again, Good Luck!

Wow, that's quite a feat

Best of luck. What with you riding to Dunwich, doesn't the ride get shorter each year?

Splendid display

of local knowledge there, Joe.

You've been awarded a karma time-out.

It does indeed

By a good few inches every year! Might take a while before it gets down to the previous longest distance I've cycled in a day, which is 70 miles...

Good luck

No, but a couple of mates are doing it. They've done it before and it sounds great. Hope to ride it my
self one day when I'm a) fitter and b) have a better bike. Know Dunwich well, though. Some nice countryside along the way. Good luck.

There's a song about Dunwich

Well, when I say song it's more of an atmosphere piece. "Dunwich Beach, Autumn, 1960" by Brian Eno on the "On Land" album. Very eerie.

Made it!

That's it really. I'm REALLY REALLY tired.

Well done, Rosbif!

Do you have to ride back now?

0
nigelthebald | 25 July 2010 - 10:01am

No!

Some mental people do cycle back after a quick breakfast and a dip in the sea. We mere mortals get coaches back, with vans bringing the bikes back. It's a bloody amazing experience, I have to say. Any other cyclists among the Massive? Must do it next year!

Chapeau, nonetheless.

I'm filled with admiration.

well done Rosbif!

I doff my helmet (ooer missus!)

Brilliant effort

Well done, Sir.
Genuinely full of admiration for you.
May I also suggest some medication you may need, after all that sitting down.

Hold on just a second

I refuse to be the butt of cheap gags.

Chapeau!

A similar event has been organised in Scotland - from Dumbarton to St Andrews, I think, but I suspect the ambient temperature makes Dunwich a bit more pleasant.

Congratulations

I'd like to do something like that one day (though probably not exactly that). I was, however, out on my bike today doing the Sky Ride in Southampton. Lots of city centre streets closed off and then a circuit round the common. The lap was approx 10 Km. I only went round twice but it was great fun and I'm just glad I wasn't trying to drive anywhere on the roads that were still open.

Very well organised with bands (and Victoria Pendleton) at the start, the town cryer en route and occasional roller skaters towing or carrying mobile PAs. Loads of families out having fun. I saw two or three very small children doing the ride on bikes with stabilisers. Full marks to Sky for their sponsorship although I still won't be resubscribing to their TV service.

Chapeau!

...to yourself and Alberto 'Balsam' Contador, both of whom had a good day on Sunday :-)

It's that time of year again!

A week on Saturday I'll be submitting myself to this all-nighter once again. This time There will be at least two people I know locally doing it too; and, most exciting of all, there is a chance that another member of the Massive will be doing the ride (won't say who, as he isn't sure yet).

Is there, perchance, anyone out there who is riding to Dunwich this year. Come forth and make yourself known!
