Birmingham City FC

When:
Sunday 27th February
Where:
Wembley Stadium, London
Comments:
So the day finally arrived when Birmingham City finally won a major cup final at Wembley. More than 130 years of largely uneventful history overcome by 90 minutes of aggressive, in your face football and a resolute determination not be turned over by the Elite of British Football. Our job was partly done for us by the arrogance of the London press who declared that Fabregas would lift the cup as the Club Captain or Arsenal and how it was 'inconceivable' that they wouldn't win. Being Underdogs is what Birmingham excel at and the scene was set. An unfortunate blunder by the inept Arsenal defence was a cruel twist of fate for them but no more than Birmingham deserved.
The Audience:
31,000 screaming and passionate Bluenoses. Many neutral observers said it was the loudest they had heard the new Wembley.
Food & Drink:
Overpriced food and watered down beer didnt detract from a fun day out but didnt compare favourably with fare on offer at say the Berlin Olympic stadium.
It Made Me Think...:
It doesnt get much better than this - supporting a team never likely to cxhallenge for regular honours is more of a challenge than Arsenal fans will ever know. Live the moment, Bluenoses.

Great stuff!
Well I have to say, as a Spurs fan, that it was a particularly entertaining encounter!
Well done the Blues!
Didn't Birminham win the League Cup in 1963?
Doesn't that make it only 48 years of largely uneventful history?
But seriously, congrats to Brum. Well deserved.
Not Forgetting
The Auto Windscreens Shield in 1995
Damn!
... how stupid of me to overlook that one.
Well done....
....and let's hope one of the less successful clubs do the same in the FA Cup.
As a Gooner...
...well done, ultimately you wanted it more than we did, though extra time would have finished you I think.
The real worry for you is that this is your season high point and you will go down - you are running out of crap teams down there. Wigan & Wolves look gone, you gotta hope West Brom don't turn it around like West Ham seem to have done.
Sounds like sour grapes to
Sounds like sour grapes to me. I think this is pay back for all the years you did not take this cup seriously and played your juniors. When you wanted to win, you still fell short. My father in law turns 70 this week and is a life long blue so I am delighted for him.
Blimey! Sour grapes...
...to say 'well done Birmingham, you wanted it more than us'? You're a harsh man!
Well you did say they would
Well you did say they would get relegated.
Wigan & Wolves look gone....
"Running out of crap teams"......we'll see about that on May 22nd. Arsenal....no stomach for a fight - will fall when they need to dig in. They don't like it up 'em Mr Mainwaring.
saw off one
sunday tho, well done blues
Well well....
Funny how it turns out.......
Indeed
My predictions were hardly Notrodamus-esque though were they?! In February, West Ham "turned it around" and Wigan & Wolves "looked gone".... Only my Birmingham FC prediction came true. And their season collapsed post-CC Final as much as ours (Arsenal) did. A definite poisonous chalice.
League cup in 1963
was always classed as a major trophy by Birmingham fans largely as a case of clutching at straws and because we beat our fiercist rivals in the final. The reality is it was not at Wembley and it was before all the top division teams entered.
In response to the Gooner I am not yet convinced that West Ham have turned it around and neither am I convinced that Blackpool are out of the mire. If you look at the table we have 2 games in hand over most of our neighbours at the bottom end of the table. I think we are safe but will breathe a much bigger sigh of relief on Saturday if we beat West Brom which potentially could move us up to about 11th.
Big fear is that the players will burn themselves out as we are also in quarter finals of FA Cup - last thing we want there is a replay but I am sure after yesterdays taste of glory the players will be doing everything in their power to get back to Wembley in the semi's and the final.
Steve
I read today that Big 'Eck was gonna get his jotters if Brum did not beat West Ham in the semi's. Is this true as you saw it?
The man who took them to 9th last year?
I stayed in Aberdeen during the glory years (early 80s)and had the pleasure to meet Alec on a few occasions. He is a good man, but did The Brum consider sacking him?
Say it aint so Joe!
Mcleish
I dont think that was the case. Unfortunately the London press have been running something of a smear campaign when it comes to BCFC. Variously the press have been saying that we are in financial trouble, Carson Yeung doesn't own the club, his holding company is about to go bust, McLeish has lost the dressing room, leading players want out etc etc. Throughout all of this Alex McLeish has maintained a level of dignity that is unique in this game. You will never hear McLeish criticise a referee - he has too much class for that. Whatever the future holds he will be forever in the hearts of asll Blues fans for what he has done for this club under pretty adverse conditions.
If he gets offered as top job elsewhere he will have earned it.
Hear hear
Good man.
Bucking the trend, I know.....
.....but if I were a Brum fan I'd take relegation if it meant we won a cup.
Chelsea didn't.
Tottenham didn't.
Arsenal fans would sell their grannies for the League Cup.
