Billy Corgan: New Year comedy gold

bogl's picture

I have spent much of today perusing another British music magazine (clue: rhymes with 'dojo'). The interview with Billy Corgan has provided much amusement. For example: how do you think this direct quote ends?

'Maybe I'm a little bit like Inspector Clouseau or something, because...'

There's more where that came from too. Has Mr Corgan always been this much value?

He should get together with...

Lou Reed and make an album. They could call it Chuckles Aplenty, or something.

Its his reasoning

about ex members of Smashing Pumpkins still being in the band. Like its the doomy rock version of 'Hotel California' that had me giggling.

he kept saying "Do you know what I mean" cos clearly he knew he was talking out of his hat.

'We are all still in the band, you understand?...'

BUT 'They are clearly not receiving cheques...'

Oh Billy, you're so Zen.

He's always been nuts.....

.....but i'm a fan. Well, I was a huge fan of the band from the debut upto Mellon Collie. After that they lost me and in the interview Corgan says he wishes the band had split after Jonathan Melvoin died.

I've not really listened to those albums over the past 10 or so years, Its only these Gish/Siamese Dream reissues that have reawakened my interest in the music he wrote during 90-95. They recorded some great music.

But he's always been a bit weird. Even when I saw them play live in the early 90's you never knew what mood he'd be in that night.

Nothing seems to have changed with Billy on that score.

Well said

For me, "Siamese Dream" is one of the five best albums of the 90s. Some great tunes and the whole thing hangs together brilliantly.

If Corgan wasn't such a pillock they might have produced another classic or two.

Instead, they produced "Adore" and whatever the hell that last one was called.

As for why James Iha doesn't feature much on the record, I have no answers for you, but feel it worth pointing out that his late 90s solo album sounded like Hanson.

There's a reason...

Iha's solo album sounded like Hanson. He's recently been in a band with their singer (and Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick and Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger).

Oh, that's a great bit of info

I've just texted the news round the half dozen people I know who bought and loathed that Iha album.

This feels like the final piece of a puzzle that has baffled us all for nigh on fifteen years: "ohhhhh, so it was actually meant to sound like that!"

Never read an interview with him

but Today came on shuffle today and it was fucking great. Took me right back to a sunny Reading festival in the '90s. They were great in their pomp as Simon said.

Aye, I were there too....

....1992, the Nirvana year. They ended their set with Billy swiping his guitar around knocking over the mic stands. Then I went and queued patiently at the NME signing tent to get my 'I Am One' 10" vinyl sleeve signed by the band. Sadly only 3 of them did as D'arcy failed to show.

Then they headlined in '95. Superb.

They were a great band live. Chamberlin on drums in particular. Not sure why some other name band didnt pick him up. Maybe due to his drug issues.

Never quite understood why James and D'arcy didnt play on the records. Certainly Corgan, whilst very talented, wasnt the most fun guy to be in a band with.

"I have a beumb"?

To get back to the question in the OP, which I feel has not been given the attention it deserves.

"I needed a Cato...

I would guess that it is a Cato reference

in that he needs to be surprised/shocked - something like that. Or he likes wearing a raincoat.

Sharon Osbourne

called Corgan "a baldy twat in a dress" following the breakdown of their artist/manager partnership.

Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins.

Homer Simpson, similing politely.

Lee Mavers In Mojo

The same issue of Mojo has a brief interview with Lee Mavers. Ha ha. What a pillock. Whats your favourite Saturday Night album? I don;t have any favourite albums.

I spent a few years close friends with a chap who was obsessed with the La's so have heard them enough to realise they were OK but really were they that good? Mavers is as mad as a box of frogs.
