Billboard Top 100

Jamie_Bowman's picture

The Billboard Top 100 is celebrating its 50th birthday and have published all manner of celebratory lists including their all time top 100 'performing' songs. As far as I can tell it's based on a complicated points system which conveys how many weeks each single stayed in the charts. I know the US chart is very different to our own but could anyone of predicted this top ten?

God help us is all I can say

If Macarena is in all time top 10 it tells us exactly what is wrong with that country - mind you let's see our equivalent.

We don't have much to shout about...

UK top selling singles of all-time (as of 2003 but it's safe to say the top 10 won't have changed), with the rest of the top 100 (with sales figures) here: http://ukcharts.20m.com/bestsell.html - there's some scary stuff between 11 and 20 too...

1. ELTON JOHN - Candle In The Wind 1997
2. BAND AID - Do They Know It's Christmas?
3. QUEEN - Bohemian Rhapsody
4. WINGS - Mull of Kintyre
5. BONEY M - Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring
6. FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD - Relax
7. BEATLES - She Loves You
8. JOHN TRAVOLTA & OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - You're The One That I Want
9. ROBSON & JEROME - Unchained Melody
10. BONEY M - Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord

The collective insanity that got Boney M two tracks in the top 10 is beyond me, and don't get me started on Robson & Jerome...

These things always throw up craziness

The oddest such list has to be this one on Wikipedia which purports to list the top selling artists in history in the whole world ever.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists

It's absurd. Bing Crosby has sold more albums than Madonna, Pink Floyd and Led Zepp. The Drifters and Nan Mouskouri have outsold The Eagles and Mettalica. KC and the Sunshine Band lord it over Guns n Roses and The Doors.

I heard someone once say that if you included Bollywood soundtracks in the charts then they would be number one every week, and if there was any way of calculating the total sales all time of Indiam film music (including the black market) then the likes of AR Rahman, Asha Bosle and others would knock the Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra and everyone else in the West out of the ballpark.
