Bill Hicks

grac's picture

Am ashamed to say I don't own any CD's despite admiring the guy for years. As he's come up in the Duffy thread below, which has SO incensed me tonight (jesus, she needs to cut that crap out right away before those pricks ruin her career), where should I start with Bill's stuff? iTunes is open and ready to go so please point me in the right direction. Cheers!

I saw

Hicks at the Hackney Empire around 91/92. I know he's a legend and all that, but ... he wasn't that good. It was kind of a 90 minute rant, and just wasn't very funny.

I'm right you're wrong

There is best of comp called Philosophy which picks the juciest chunks but you lose the flow of his act.

Best to start with either Dangerous\Relentless as those contain his mmost well known\loved bits. The later posthumous discs are a great deal angrier and darker. Especially, unsurprisingly, Rant in E Minor

LoveLaughter and Truth is similar to Dangerous and 'Flying Saucer Tour' is Bill struggling with his audience. The Oxford Playhouse show is pretty dispensable.

Plus get the Totally Bill Hicks DVD for the documentary and his 1993 Dominion show for the Goat Boy in full effect.

Rant in E Minor!

The routine "Rush Limbaugh" is the most gleefully offensive thing I have ever heard... Better than most music I'd say...

Almost a gleeful

as watching Jay Leno eulogising Bill in the 'Just A Ride' documentary and listening to Bill rip into Jay's show on 'Rant'

'Dangerous'...

Totally Bill Hicks DVD

The Totally Bill Hicks DVD is excellent. It has the Revelations live show and a fairly interesting documentary too - http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/C4DVD10068.htm

Go with Dennis Leary instead.

He isn't a legend but he can actually be funny as in ha ha funny.

Thank God...I thought I was the only person

on the planet who enjoys Dennis Leary; he knows that he's a comedian not a preacher. There's a message somewhere, but it doesn't get in the way of the jokes. I think he's marvellous in Rescue Me as well. Have we raved about that show yet around these parts?

My favourite film of his is The Ref (AKA Hostile Hostages)

He plays a burglar on the run from the police. He takes a family at war with each other hostage (played by Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis) in order to hide out in their house. Very funny film.

Dennis Leary is Shed Seven next to Hicks' Rolling Stones...

so in other words, I beg to differ.

Relentless or Dangerous

CDs are your best bet to kick off with. Or the Relentless live hour long film which is on 'Totally Bill Hicks'.
STARTING with 'Rant in E..' might just put you off.

You can't mention adverts or advertising these days without his name coming up, of late it's been happening everywhere. Also the original advertising rant (seen here in London) has had more than a million YouTube views.

I think he'd be proud.
