Bill Forsyth

marsonator's picture

Just watched Gregory's Girl for the first time in many years and although a little dated the innocence and unthreatening nature coupled with the eccentric nuances gave me great pleasure.

I then noticed that after waiting for ages "That Sinking Feeling" Bill Forsyth's first film, is finally released on DVD the week after next.....yay!

I remember watching this on BBC2 on a Sunday night about 25 years ago and haven't seen it since (God all this makes me feel ancient...are we really saying Gregory's Girl is almost 30 years old ?)

Wonder what Dee Hepburn looks like nowadays and what was that penguin all about ?

Hope it's the original, not English-dubbed version

I seem to remember seeing a version of TSF with one of the characters re-named Vic or Simon?

I'm trying to rmember whether Comfort & Joy was good - it's on sale for about £3 in HMV or FOPP at the moment.

that sinking feeling bill forsyth..

just purchased TSF from hmv and it is indeed the english dubbed version ,which makes the film totally useless..I to watched it many years ago and it was great ,but the dubbing totally loses the whole plot ..........beware when buying .not many scots will watch it.

My favourite film

I never tire of "Gregory's Girl", and it remains my favourite film to this day. I've only seen "That Sinking Feeling" once so I'm looking forward to the reissue.

"Comfort and Joy" is also good, if a little more sombre, but still well worth watching. There are lots of great moments in there to love ("find out if there's a sanity clause", the thug's "you're Dicky Bird!", and the almost "Star Wars" X-Wing hangar-esque scene where you see the ice cream company's garage to name but three).

Of course everybody knows and loves "Local Hero" too...

"You're Dicky Bird" - brilliant!

I'd forgotten that, yes I'll go out & buy it after all, thanks Mr Nasalhair (if that's your real name?).

I can't think

of another director who started their career off with such a great run - That Sinking Feeling, Gregory's Girl (still my favourite film ever), Local Hero and Comfort and Joy. CAJ is a perfect alternative Chirstmas movie. Housekeeping and Being Human are interesting too.
Tarantino maybe...

Yes but

what happened after that? According to Wiki just a poor Gregory's Girl sequel in the last 15 years. That's not much output for such a talented guy.

Dee Hepburn

hasn't changed a bit, according to my wife. She now works as a medical rep and is in and out of my wife's work quite regularly. As my wife works alongside 20 year olds, the thrill of Dorothy visiting the workplace means absolutely to them. We still watch Gregory's Girl at least once a year. It's the only film we both agree on.

Looking forward to That Sinking Feeling - a lost classic if there ever was one.
