Bill Fay

I heard this track on 6 Music’s Freak zone last night . I’d never heard of Bill Fay before, but it’s a lovely track with some slighty unusual orchestration by Mike Gibbs. Some of the orchestration sounds harmonically wrong, I’m not sure if this was intentional on
Gibb’s part, but it’s interesting listening.

I discovered him
through Wilco.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a listen.
He's pretty good and worth investigating
Discovered him through Rob Young's brilliant Electric Eden book. Some seem to push him as another Nick Drake, more thanks to many years of total obscurity followed by a burgeoning cult following than anything to do with the music it seems to me - neither his songs nor his voice are a patch on Drake IMO. But, the two albums I've got are never less than interesting: the self-titled debut is somewhat marred by the spectacularly over the top orchestration but the orchestra free Time of the Last Persecution verges on the very good indeed.
He released some new last year which I haven't heard.
Seconded.
Bonkers maverick territory, always worth a listen.
Time Of The Last Persecution
Recorded when the dude obviously wasn't well and with no bells and whistles,, a sort of apocalypse/martyrdom concept album where he's obviously talking about his own pain. Makes Nick Drake sound like Jedward.
