Big Hit, Forgotten Flick

milkybarnick's picture

Twice this weekend I've heard records that were huge chart hits, but came from the soundtracks of lesser known films. The first was this on Pick of the Pops on Saturday:

From that well remembered film "Fast Break" apparently. Second one is in the comments to avoid overloading the front page; anyone got any others to share?

Second was this...

...which I heard this morning. It's from the Basketball/ Cartoon movie "Space Jam" - which was big at the time, but it's not one you see much on the telly now, is it?

My 5-a-side team

Plays in a league organised by a company which also runs basketball leagues. One of their basketball teams has the memorable name: "Space Jam Changed My Life".

They also have a football team called "Fiorentina Turner", which never fails to raise a chuckle.

How about this?

From the film "Crocodile Dundee"

jackthebiscuit | 29 January 2012 - 9:06pm

Lesser-known film?

It was the second-highest grossing film of 1986.

It was the second-highest grossing film of 1986.

Agreed, but its not shown on the major terrestrial channels these days is it ?

The song had already been a hit In Australia

before appearing in the film.

0
B Smith | 29 January 2012 - 11:46pm

Strangely enough

It was on Channel 4 yesterday.

Steerpike | 29 January 2012 - 11:48pm

Oops...

Sorry, consider my neck well & truly wound in.

jackthebiscuit | 30 January 2012 - 3:07am

Interestingly

I had a look at the highest-grossing films of 1986.

Only Platoon made both the critics' lists and the top-10 box-office.

I nominate Ben by Michael Jackson

The theme from the sequel to Willard (1971) called Ben (1972) a horror film about killer rats.

Zanti Misfit | 29 January 2012 - 9:22pm

Anybody...

...ever seen Up Tight!, which features this?

(Time Is Tight - Booker T. & the MGs)

Inky Fingers | 29 January 2012 - 9:58pm

If we can extend this to soundtracks

Then John Barry's soundtrack to The Black Hole.

Has anybody every actuallly watched

Car Wash?

Ace record.

0
Moose the Mooche | 29 January 2012 - 10:50pm

Although

Was Car Wash written for the film, or was the film based on the song?

0
Brookster | 29 January 2012 - 10:51pm

Don't know mate

but it's bound to be better than the film they based on this record.

Arthur Mullard – Staying Alive by gpgoogle

I'm told there's another version out there somewhere, the Gee Gees or summat.

I was unaware of this record

Having also heard his (and Hylda Baker's) version of You're the One That I Want, I can only assume he was blackmailing Robert Stigwood.

Brookster | 29 January 2012 - 11:51pm

Nearly forgot

I own the DVD of Vampyros Lesbos — an unremarkable bit of Euro-trash cinema (although it does feature the lovely Soledad Miranda).

The soundtrack, on the other hand, is terrific.

Several acts broken in the States by Pretty in Pink

OMD, Psychedelic Furs, Echo, Smiths and New Order.

But I can barely remember the film.

A record store, Otis Redding and a really cool dude...well, my teenage self fell in love...

Double

.

Not really conforming to OP criteria, but anyway ...

There's a prototypical eighties soundtrack by Wang Chung (good grief ...) to the fantastically ignored Friedkin flick "To Live And Die In L.A." which you should add to cart at your earliest opportunity. From the lipstick typography, through the thudding synth soundtrack, to the sleazeball characters and unredeemed plotline, it's some kind of masterpiece of hollow. Like "Heat", only with grime instead of shine. And the Wangs (not Flock Of Seagulls, apparently, although I confuse the two) are perfect for it.

To Live And Die In L.A.

is a fantastic film, though the soundtrack sucks IMO.

0
Sour Crout | 30 January 2012 - 9:29am

I don't like Wang Chung, but

they seem absolutely right for the movie. It's the sound the city was making at the time. Something about the cheesy superficiality of it sits absolutely right. Wouldn't want to sit through the soundtrack album, though!

What's La Pfeiffer doing in Coolio's video?

Oh yeah, there was a film of some sort..

0
STD | 30 January 2012 - 8:12am

and yea gods

it was a stinker

0
Sour Crout | 30 January 2012 - 9:28am

Sweet Freedom

Sour Crout | 30 January 2012 - 9:26am

Heroine by Sinead O'Connor and The Edge from the film Captive

I bought this single at the time, but I don't ever remember the film coming out. Has anyone ever seen it?

0
Five-Centres | 30 January 2012 - 1:01pm

Thought of another one last night

"Crazy for You" by Madonna, from that well-remembered Matthew Modine starring wrestling film Vision Quest.

There's even bits of it in the video (which I can't post cos I'm at work).

0
milkybarnick | 30 January 2012 - 1:53pm

Amazing album. Oh it's a soundtrack.

S'funny. Don't remember the film...
