Big Bang Theory - new season starts tonight, E4, 9.00 pm

Metal Mickey's picture

Just a quick pointer to the start of Season 3 of “The Big Bang Theory” on E4 tonight at 9.00pm (apologies to those without Freeview.)

I don’t want to oversell it, but it’s an excellent, good-natured (and funny) sitcom that’s getting next to no publicity here, despite being the most-watched (non-sport, -news or -reality) TV programme in the US right now (admittedly not a guarantee of quality, but it obviously has something going for it.)

The show’s secret weapon is Jim Parsons’ brilliant turn as supernerd Sheldon, a cult waiting to happen. Worth giving a try, just sayin’.

fellow geek

As a fellow physicist I think it is hysterical.

Remember in the 90's

when lots of magazines ran those "which 'Friend' are you?" pop psychology quizzes?

I wish they'd do one for TBBT.

I'm a Raj, by the way, except that even the alcohol doesn't work. Gah!

I like the little things. One episode I caught on E4 this week had Einstein's General Relativity field equations on the whiteboard hidden in the background. and that Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy, actually does have a PhD in neuroscience.

All we need now is for Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years to show up - rather good mathematician I recall.

What is important, from a geek point of view, is that, funny as it is, they actually take care to get the geek stuff right, like the science, and the comics. It wouldn't work otherwise, but it so does.

Hmm... in my own little universe

50-50 Penny and Amy. Like I say, in my head ;-p.

I'm having difficulty stopping myself watching the +1 repeats, whilst slobbing around on Xmas hols. Couldn't stop myself yesterday. The episode where Penny insults Howard and he laments a lost girlfriend, Marcy Grossman, to the tune of 'My Girl' had me laughing out loud. I did wonder if his never-seen mouth-almighty mum (genius!) was Valerie Harper (sounds very like her) but apparently not.

Priya is so wrong for you Leonard! :-)

I beg to differ...

...surely the show's not-so-secret weapon is Kaley Cuoco, the most Californian of females...

As Amy Farrah Fowler says

"Homespun stories, knowledge of physics and a bosom that defies it; you're the whole package, aren't you?"

Amy's becoming one of my favourite characters

For a long while they were clearly just pitching her as a female Sheldon, but the writers have been adding lots of nice touches (like the blatant crush on Penny) to give her a separate identity... I do love Penny's barely disguised look of terror whenever Amy refers to her as her "bestie."

(And it's nice to know that Mayim Bialik in real life actually has a PhD in Neuroscience...)

Geeks And Girls

For a programme about geeky boys the girls have always been pretty well written.

Sorry to reply to my own comment, but...

... in the latest episode (US-pace), Amy gets an absolutely hysterical moment that's probably the highlight of this season so far. If you've seen it, you'll know what I mean, if not, keep an eye out for 'The Shiny Trinket Maneuver' (sic) soon on one of the Channel 4 stations...

Agree + another

Have to agree, I've been watching from the start & it's a very well written & acted sitcom, much better than the majority of British attempts. Another US sitcom which doesn't seem to be getting the plaudits I think it deserves is Modern Family, showing Thursdays on Sky 1 (maybe that's why?). Again, well written & acted, with a show stealing performance from Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy from Married with Children).

Definitely my current favourite sitcom

The GLW and I love this show!

Thanks to the wonders of torrenting, we're half way through the 3rd series and I'm pleased to say the standard has been maintained - even despite *VERY MILD SPOILER* a very unexpected twist in the first minute of the first episode.

Thirded

BBT is very good indeed, Sheldon is a wonderful creation and brilliantly played by Jim Parsons. The actors all compliment each other.
And Doomah,hands off my Penny.
Modern Family is the new gem for me. As good as everyone is telling you and the Superman/Colombian Dad line is a killer.

TBBT seems to have filled the Friends-shaped hole on E4/C4...

... and I am now hopelessly addicted. I have no idea where I've landed in the show's life either (who cares!) - the episode I just saw, with Leonard's mum (Christine Baranski, late of 'Cybill') coming to visit was a classic. They all are. Such a high quality of writing, acting and physical comedy (particularly from Jim Parsons) - it's right up there with Frasier IMHO.

Anyone else 'discovered' the show of late?

Love it

Been watching for a little while now. I love American sitcoms, especially when they get 'snappy' with the dialogue. I don't think we do that thing very well that the Americans do, which is to sit their characters around and play pinball with the dialogue. Our equivalent tends to be more like the Miles Davis version of jazz, all about the spaces than what is actually said.

Bazinga!

Not sure I'd say it's in the class of the top-division comedies, but it's a charming, undemanding, giggly 30 minutes with an occasional world-class line from "Sheldor the Conqueror."

And sure Kaley Cuoco doesn't hurt, either.

Yesterday I watched this

followed by Sherlock. Began to get a bit confused by the Sherlock/Sheldon similarities.

Mr Fade | 16 January 2012 - 11:06pm

If you look in the Sherlock thread

I mentioned Sheldon over there a few days back. I'm imagining a day when he takes over the role.

SimonL | 16 January 2012 - 11:29pm

Winnie Cooper

got a mention up there somewhere..

the episode where Raj and Sheldon go to a bar and Sheldon takes the Green Lantern's lantern and they 'pull'...the one Raj ends up with is Winnie...watched it the other night, hadn't noticed before!

SimonL | 17 January 2012 - 12:56pm

I did

and I hadn't. Is it their mission to get every postgraduate level actor a cameo on that show at some point?
