When Beyonce isn’t firing out epic war chants for the jilted female masses (which she truly isn’t here)who knows? 'Countdown' is the sole‘get your mazzy on and let’s bust some nuts’ clarion-call with it's quirky dancehall-meets-parade ground blare and that stacatto delivery from ‘B:the Destiny’s Child Years'.But otherwise it's a tribute record to late 80’s soul and R&B...and some...other things. Perhaps 'undefinable' is the unavoidable result of delivering a 70-odd track Beyonce brain-dump for a 12-track album;catchy enough but nothing really ka-boomy. The Beyonce Effect and the album’s production undoubtably transform that which, under the fake-lashed eye of anyone else would be backdrop to a Top Gun musical montage ('I Miss You') or a song seemingly built around an HBO Hospital drama piano hook (Best Thing I Never Had)but '4' is still an album of all the bits of the other Beyonce albums that weren't the famous songs.
