Betty Driver on Desert Island Discs
Posted by drakeygirl on 15 October 2011 - 2:54pm.
Betty Driver, the actress who played Betty Turpin in Coronation Street for more than 40 years and nearly 3000 episodes, has died, aged 91.
I didn't know much about her until I heard her on Desert Island Discs earlier this year. If you haven't heard the programme, the link is here. It's a brilliant piece of radio.
Its worth remembering, too, that this is just one of a huge archive of DID episodes. Lucas Hare of this very parish wrote a great blog piece about his experiences trawling through the archives: you can read it here.

Ah, I'll miss Betty...
...feels a bit like the end of an era, to me.
One of my fave DIDs, even though I knew her story.
I have an old film with her in when she was 17/18 about winning the penny pools. She was called Betty in that too.
I heard this when it went out...
...and found it incredibly annoying. I couldn't put my finger on why. There's something about her manner that I found insincere; maybe a kind of forced matter-of-factness, I dunno. Having said that, I hated the Danny Baker DID, so maybe it's something to do with the format? (though I've been listening since I was a sboolboy in the 70s...)
Anyway, Betty had quite a life and may she RIP.
I, too...
...had never heard of her until I was advised to seek out her episode of Desert Island Discs. It is gently heartbreaking.
And thanks for the blog-up, DG.
Corro is currently unwatchable
and with the passing of Betty Driver it seems like the complete end for me. Her DID was incredibly moving and I found her matter of fact way of talking very refreshing. Although her character had become a supporting player in recent years she, along with Bill Tarmy, were the soul of the street. It'll never be the same again.
We often bumped into Betty
when she was visiting a friend in the hospital that my late mother-in-law was to spend her last days. She always had the time to smile, say hello and chat to anyone who recognised her. No big-star-off-the-telly from our Betty. I rarely watch anything on commercial channels now, especially reality shows, but it pains me to see assorted tabloids and weekly rags pushing anyone appearing on these shows as celebrities. If only the inhabitants of TOWIE (wassat?) had 1% of the talent that Betty had they still would not warrant any of the coverage they receive.
I'll have a hotpot and a pint, thanks love.
An up arrow is not enough!
Thanks for posting that Beany, confirmed what I thought about the lady.
