Better than the original?

Carwash Casteneda's picture

I found this today... took me head clean off! Wondering of other examples of covers that eclipse the originals?

1

Crazy

I've always preferred the Ray Lamontagne cover of 'Crazy' far more than the Gnarls Barkley original.

This one I loved!

I was fine upto the twenty

I was fine upto the twenty second mark, but something about Charlotte Church makes me want to run to the hills!

Bad Cover Version

actually, I think it's a great cover version

John Lennon ruined that...

My Mum memorably said "John Lennon ruined that song" when she heard his Jealous Guy for the first time about five years ago. I prefer the Ferry version myself, to be honest.

She was also v. disappointed at the Doors' Light My Fire when she heard that coming from my room some time in the mid 1980's.

That Nick Cave cover sounds.....

like a Songsmith version of the original.

Possibly slightly controversial

I prefer the Mark Ronson/ Lily Allen version of "Oh My God" to the Kaiser Chiefs original.

So

do I.

JoLean | 3 February 2009 - 9:53pm

Not at all controversial

I prefer most things to Kaiser Chiefs originals.

That's a relief

When the original song was a hit I was a student in Leeds and didn't like the Kaiser Chiefs much at all. I kept that opinion fairly quiet at the time.

Whilst shopping a couple of months ago I heard the Mark Ronson version in one shop, then the Kaiser Chiefs version in another and by comparison the original sounded like a demo - at least to me.

Mark Ronsons's versions

of other people's songs are almost always better than the originals IMO.

Sorry_ what was the original?

Lost me there, I'm afraid. Whilst we're on Crazy, note also versions by Shawn Colvin and Nelly Furtado. And, um, the Kooks.

It's a

Fleet Foxes song, performed here by the dreadfully named First Aid Kit - buy their mini album though, it's lovely.

I've recently got my hands

I've recently got my hands on the Shawn Colvin version. Very good. Not a fan of the Kooks one, but shall seek out the Nelly Furtado.

What about

Furniture, and their hilarious version of 'Anarchy in the UK'...no?..maybe not then

0

I always prefered frank sidebottom's version

You know I do, I really do, thank you.

Talking of anarchy.....

You can't go wrong with the Ukranians, Wedding Present offshoot with the full balalaika, stentorian vocals and Smiths style 80s indie drums schtick. Unfortunately I can't find their version of "Anarkhiya" (in the UK) but it is all still marvellous stuff. I have their greatest hits, mainly originals but also Venus In Furs (Velvet Underground), Telstar and, funnily enough, a Smiths song or 2, including:

I Say A Little Prayer

I think even Bacharach thinks Aretha's version is better than Dionne's.

Jackie Levens version is pretty shite hot

...tho' the line about "when I put on my make-up" always makes me smile, as anyone who has seen the man mountain will appreciate.

Retropath2 | 5 February 2009 - 9:07am

What about

Alexandra Burke's version of Hallej... OK maybe not!

0
Red Umpire | 5 February 2009 - 12:20am

Possibly my all-time favourite cover version

The original video at the top of the thread is cracking, btw. The Indigo Girls comparisons in the YT comments are apt, obviously, but I think it's also amazing how much the song sounds like it could be something by the Shins once all the vocal reverb is taken away.

Merv | 5 February 2009 - 9:56am

Ooh, and this one is both a cover version and a mash-up...

...does that win a special prize?

0
Merv | 5 February 2009 - 9:58am

This is fairly genius too

Is anyone still paying attention to this thread? Or is it just me?

0
Merv | 7 February 2009 - 11:22pm

Nope

None of us are adding to this thread, we're adding the content to spotify word cover list. Jump in, waters lovely!

Still waiting for my invite!

The 'get started' link doesn't seem to work down here in NZ.

Merv | 7 February 2009 - 11:59pm

This sounds pretty good to me

Heard this before I'd heard Billy Bragg's version, and I don't think it suffers by comparison.

Hosskins | 8 February 2009 - 1:09am

Love that song

I saw them do it together at Reading Festival in 1996 (I think). The two (very) different vocal styles worked together really well.
