Best Sunday Breakfast in the West End?

tim tunes's picture

Off standard topic but help appreciated

Having a cultural weekend with family in London. Decided to brave the British Museum on Sunday morning and was looking to have breakfast somewhere relatively close by.

As a number of the esteemed community here are both metropolitan but also of good taste would appreciate any recommendation..

There is a blog called London Review of Breakfasts which may be helpful - http://londonreviewofbreakfasts.blogspot.com/

What's your budget?

The Wolseley is meant to be fantastic, but not cheap. Sadly, Smithfield market is closed on a Sunday so all the pubs round there follow its lead. Smiths of Smithfield is open, but a bit poncy and liable to be busy. Beware tourist trap places near the museum itself...

If you're going to the British Museum...

Can I recommend the Charlotte Street Hotel. Not cheap, but very good the last time I was there about 18 months ago. Short walk to the museum.

Wolseley is great too. Not cheap, but not as expensive as you'd think, their menu's online.

Any budget constraints?

If you're happy to lighten the wallet, I can heartily recommend The Wolseley on Piccadilly. (The FPO and I only tend to have breakfast in London when we've stayed overnight after gigs, and we're already in a self-indulgent mood.) We came here on the Sunday after seeing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Shepherd's Bush last year, and it topped the weekend off very nicely indeed.

A short walk away...

I heartily recommend the Breakfast Club in Soho - http://www.thebreakfastclubsoho.com/. I always make a detour there when I'm in the capital.

if the weather ok the cafe in russel square is

really good it was rebuilt 5 years ago and is cheap and good. nice coffee and crossiants and on sunny day russel square is very lovely and it's only 2 minutes walk from the north side of the museum.
If not how about a stroll to soho and Bar italia for the best coffee. sadly sunday am patchy for cafes in central london unless you go fancy dan see above !! :)

Bang in the middle...

don't entirely trust this blokes

views as he seems to think chips are any sort of breakfast food but here's a fuller review of the cafe.

For a Manhatten-style breakfast

I like the Union Cafe on Marylebone Lane. The papers, eggs benedict, fresh coffee etc. It's a good walk from the museum through the back streets north of Oxford St, but it's worth the trek. Follow it by popping into my favourite butcher, The Ginger Pig, where you should buy some sausage rolls for later on. They're literally amazing.

The Bear & Staff

We had a great Full English Breakfast in a pub called the Bear & Staff near Leicester Square last weekend - I'd certainly recommend that, though of course, if you're with younger family members, I don't know what the rules are about children...
