I'd vote for

Nick Drake: Hazey Jane 1
John Cale: Paris 1919
Stones: She's A Rainbow
Sandy Denny: Like An Old Fashioned Waltz

Paul Buckmaster's

effort on Moonlight Mile was pretty special.

0
Charlie Gordon | 21 August 2009 - 10:55am

Unbleedin'canny...

Not only was I thinking of posting on this very subject but was going to make special of Mr Buckmaster and Moonlight Mile - a magical Stones moment

PB's fantastic arrangement on Reggie's - Madman across the Water - is memorable too

Yes

his arrangements on the first three EJ albums are sublime - albums which I believe are highly underrated these days, lost in the pantomine spectacle that he is now.

Charlie Gordon | 21 August 2009 - 11:24am

My vote

goes to 60 Years On from the self-titled album. Beautiful string arrangement. Interesting fact: the first time I heard this song was on Radio 1 in about 1984 or so, when Steve Wright played it, saying it was one of his favourite songs ever. Good call.

The end

of Van's Cypress Avenue is hard to beat.

Depeche Mode - One Caress

Across The Border ELO

Love the pizzacato and the storming swirling ending

0
MrRadio | 21 August 2009 - 11:12am

also Living Thing

especially the strings towards the end with the rising and falling arpeggio (is that the right term? - no probably not, too many notes) - wonderful stuff.

0
MichaelP | 21 August 2009 - 12:12pm

Arpeggio?

sweet left foot.

Inter-Palermo's great midfield of '60s - Arpeggio, Fortissimo, Carbonara and Antipasti

0
Sheev | 21 August 2009 - 12:37pm

Love the string arrangements

on XTCs Apple Venus Vol1 especially River Of Orchids, Greenman and I Can't Own Her

0
MrRadio | 21 August 2009 - 11:18am

Seconded

and also Wrapped In Grey.

0
RobertC | 21 August 2009 - 11:26am

Now that the XTC word has come up,

I suggest Dave Gregory's marvellous treatment of "1000 Umbrellas".

0
Ipsie Dixit | 21 August 2009 - 7:46pm

All good choices

I also like The Verve's History:

and Kate's Cloudbusting:

Also one of my all-time favourite videos.

Ahh Kate, you are so very special.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 21 August 2009 - 11:25am

My favourite

Scott Walker (only a matter of time before he showed up here) - It's Raining Today

0
David Rothon | 21 August 2009 - 11:44am

Eleanor Rigby

Surely? Double string quartet! What a brilliant musical call from George Martin.

Also agree with Paul Buckmaster comments above.

0
Mousey | 21 August 2009 - 11:51am

I think I read that Jane Asher was

palying Paul a lot of string quartets, would be curious if that had any truth to it

Strings Strings Strings

My favourite is the UNKLE/Richard Ashcroft track 'Lonely Souls', which has a belting string arrangement that comes in at around the 6 minute mark i think... feckin' amazing Will Malone arrangement (who is brilliant with string arrangements) which has a very Barber's Adagio theme to it.

Was on the 'The Beach' soundtrack if i remember rightly.

Goodnight

It's so wonderful in it's timeless English fireside peter pan victorian snowy winter astral dog flying rooftop comfortness, that I think that John, wisely, let Ringo sing because he was the best voice for the job by far.

0
RobertC | 21 August 2009 - 5:47pm

Bernie Taupin

Montana Song
Ballad of The Ship of State
Midnight Carousel
on David Ackles' 'American Gothic' - all beautifully 'Coplandesque'

Also,
Chris Gunning on Colin Blunstone's 'One Year'
for : -
Misty Roses
Say You Don't Mind etc.

The Ivor Raymonde arrangementson many of Dusty Springfield and Scott Walker tracks for Phillips.

Brilliantly effective use of strings on this

and (imo) this

(which I did indeed come across first in Jackie Brown, Tarantino has his uses)

0
SpaceBoy | 21 August 2009 - 6:36pm

Nick Drake

has already been mentioned - but surely we can't forget the shimmering magnificence of River Man?

0
soapdodger | 21 August 2009 - 8:28pm

Yes indeed…

… All credit to Harry Robinson - wonderful arrangement

0
David Rothon | 21 August 2009 - 11:42pm

My vote goes to this...

Sandy Denny's Next Time Around. It helps that it is one of my favourite ever songs...

0
Patrick Crowther | 21 August 2009 - 8:34pm

One of mine

too, by an all time favourite artist.

0
RobertC | 22 August 2009 - 8:17am

Harry Robinson..

.. as well - isn't it? Cracking choice!

0
soapdodger | 22 August 2009 - 8:19am

Nearly 30 posts and nobody's mentioned this

Tom Waits - San Diego Serenade; string arrangement by Bob Alcivar, I think. Gorgeous.

0
Theo Zoffrok | 21 August 2009 - 11:15pm

OK, one more

Perhaps a less obvious one. I have a very soft spot for Lush's penultimate album, Split. There are a number of lovely string arrangements too, including this one, for Light From A Dead Star.

0

Baby the Stars Shine Bright

From the unfashionable end of Everything But The Girl's career, this album is a lush, string-driven thing.

0

Sublime arrangements originally by Anne Dudley (Art of Noise), I believe.

0

Ever since

hearing this:
