Best singing footballer

Brookster's picture

Of course, rubbish singing footballers are ten a penny, but has any player ever excelled at the task?

Terry Venables could carry a tune. Even Vinnie Jones could sing passably. However, my favourite is probably Fulham's Les Barrett and this slightly surreal bit of 60s bubblegum.

Les Barrett — Julie Brown Loves Captain Cook

Look

This is surely beyond debate.

Andy Reid

Street footballer, street busker.

According to one version of events he was chucked out of the Ireland squad for wanting to sing "one more song". That's suffering for your music!

That Les Barrett track just made my day

Thanks Brookster!

Although generally allergic to singing footballers, I was about 10 when "World in Motion" came out and - no smirking at the back, please - I thought John Barnes' rap was the very acme of cool. OK, you'd never mistake him for, say, Chuck D, but it still has a strange charm for me even now.

By the by, I also remember hearing that Christian Dailly was in a band while at West Ham several moons ago, but I may have just dreamed that...

Paul McGregor

Anyone remember him? The Britpop footballer. Played upfront for Forest.

How did I forget about him?

And speaking of mid-90s Forest players, didn't Scot Gemmill also have "musical inclinations" at that time?

I'm not sure

But going back a few years, Frank Clark used to entertain his Forest team-mates on the coach with a one-man acoustic show. This was in the days when players didn't step off the coach wearing MASSIVE headphones.

He was lauded

on the pages of 'MATCH' magazine back in the mid 90s.

There's only one HJH

and that's Glenn Hoddle

but there are 2 for the Diamond Lights

F*ck me, I'd forgotten all about that

If the evidence wasn't there you'd never believe it got in the charts. Hoddle was a great player but he's got some very strange views.

Maybe the answer to this question

is Des O'Connor, who was a professional footballer in his youth.
