Best Of Now

Leedsboy's picture

I liked the Best Of Now feature in the new mag. Got me thinking about what I would add to the list and after some mild deliberation, I decided that it is Podcasts.

I pretty much don't listen to music in the car when I'm on my own nor when I'm struggling for sleep at night anymore. I have enough free, interesting and thought provoking podcasts that get me through the entire week (and some). Let's hear it for The Word Podcast (the one that got me into podcasts), Andrew Collins and Richard Herring, Adam & Joe, Phill & Phil's Perfect 10, Fighting Talk and others for possibly being the best thing about having an iPod.

What's your best of now?

100 Bullets

You're approached by an old guy. He gives you an attache case. It contains a gun, 100 bullets and irrefutable proof that someone fucked up your life and got away with it - until now. The gun is registered in such a way that if you use it, the investigating cops will drop the case as soon as they recover a bullet. Revenge is there for you, if you want it.
100 Bullets is the best of now - it is a comic book series that is just coming to an end (100 issues) - it's a crime comic that contains an intriguing plot that twists and turns between out and out pulp episodes and a grand over-arching conspiracy that reveals who is really running America. It's scary, bawdy, violent, hilarious and gripping. If you like the Wire, The Sopranos, Tarantino, Lost, the Godfather and can cope with pictures and text on the same page - you will enjoy this.
Eduardo Risso's artwork is superb, gorgeously observed settings, well defined characters and beautiful colours. The writing by Brian Azzarello is magnificent - snappy, believable dialogue, great plots.
It's collected into trade paperbacks - usually 8 issues per book - start at the beginning, it's a hell of a ride.

Apple.

iMac, iTunes, iPod (if I could afford it I'd have one of everything. Thanks very much). But right now, it's also iPlayer Grabber. This wonderful little app allows me to grab the best from the beeb and lets me watch or listen again (when I want to, not when they say) Regular downloads include Adam & Joe and I recently caught up with 'Being Human' after missing it live.

Gemma Hayes

I'm going to nominate Gemma Hayes as the Best of Now. Very under-appreciated in my opinion. People bought the first album, but she seems to have gone off the radar a bit, and being British, I tend to praise the underdog. Hayes crafts tender songs that have a bit of bite (the song below features Kevin Shields from MBV on guitar), as well as having one of the most fragile voices a man could ask for. Plus, the woman is exceedingly good looking. Which, I find, helps matters a great deal. If all else were to be removed from the iPod, I would be happy as long as my collection of Gemma's work still exists. And that is a good sign, yes?
