Alberta Cross
Their Broken Side of Time album is just superb imvho. A nice meld of 3 of my favourite albums from recent years - Kent's Isola, the first Band of Horses album and the excellent Fire Theft.
The Jim Jones Revue
Raw as hell garage rock and roll.
Volcano Choir - Island Is
It's Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and some other dudes.
Utterly fantastic particularly towards the end where it kicks back in (the reeperbahn bit...)
The other dudes
are from Collections of Colonies of bees...May I suggest you try their album Birds...It's ace....some would say it's meandering jam stuff, but I say no, well yes, but there's a palpable joy to it..

Track 2 & 3 are particularly good...
will check them out as soon as i can!
thanks for the recommendation!
I'm not quite as up to speed as some....
but yesterday I listened to the Florence and the Machine album for the first time. It was brilliant - not heard anything new that was that good for a long time. Looking forward to another listen on the way home.
Here's my list
Coincidentally I was going to ask a similar question last week but never got round to it.
This years "finds" for me were:
Gentleman Jesse - top power pop
Trip wires - more power pop
The 1990s - Nothing revolutionary - just a great noise
M Ward - Solo and with the Monsters of Folk
Silvery - Yes, I do like Sparks!
Carrie Rodriguez - I got to see her in a tiny village hall as well.
Voluntary Butler Scheme - The ghosts of the Supernaturals (that's a good thing!)
Who are Silvery?
I'm interested as you mentioned them along with Sparks.
Someone told me Of Montreal were a bit Sparks-like too so I will have to check them out.
Like Early Sparks
Silvery sound very much like early Sparks, I would say it's a bit like what Kimono My House might have sounded like if they hadn't split the US band. Try "Action Force" & "Devil In The Detail" for starters - they're both on MySpace. The album is on Emusic.
Thanks John
I'm listening now - I can certainly see what you mean but it's all a bit too close to early Sparks for comfort I think.
They sound great, don't get me wrong but just a bit familiar!
Still, I'd rather a young band take their influence from Sparks than Oasis any day.
I have discovered the following bands this year*
1. Florence and The Machine
2. The Zombies
3. The Carpenters
4. Broken Records
5. Carole King
6. Depeche Mode
7. Garfunkel and Oates
8. Lady Gaga
9. Okkervill River
10. The Unthanks.
*Not in a Columbus manner, of course.
Curt Boettcher
Stuart Maconie's Freakzone has been a constant source of discovery for me over the years. This, heard for the first time a couple of months ago, is pure unadulterated joy.
