BEST LOOKING BASS PLAYER EVER

Bodhisattva's picture

...and one of the best. Face facts Macca. This just last week too - how old is she now?

2

Bass players...

...are often, nay, usually, the sexiest ones in bands. Fact.

*sits back and waits for several examples of ugly bass players and several bass players agreeing*

4
JoLean | 18 January 2011 - 7:10pm

Then Perhaps

...people might provide us with evidence of "For every Tina Weymouth..."

0
Bodhisattva | 18 January 2011 - 7:15pm

I'll bite.

Actually, I was perving over Tina Weymouth's seafoam green Hofner replica more than anything.

I've said too much.

0
Jon | 18 January 2011 - 9:15pm

Not a bloke

Michael Steele from the Bangles?

3
daff | 18 January 2011 - 7:18pm

oh damn yes

swoons

0
illuminatus | 18 January 2011 - 10:17pm

Kim Gordon - Sonic Youth

Very lovely. And must be about the same age as Tina Weymouth.

Another favourite of mine is Britta Phillips, ex-Luna. Currently half of Dean & Britta, and also Mrs Dean Wareham.

0
Resting Place | 18 January 2011 - 7:26pm

Do keep up.

Come on boys, half an hour in and no-one has mentioned Suzi Quatro yet.

Poor show.

PS I always thought Alex James from Blur was very good-looking. A prize git, but good-looking.

0
JoLean | 18 January 2011 - 7:31pm

Suzi

Was on Minder this evening (ITV 4). She was playing the part of a bass player (as well as playing a bass). Lots of snogging with the Waterman.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 18 January 2011 - 11:23pm

ALEX JAMES!!!!!!!

Oh, how I used to love Alex James

*comes over a bit funny and has to have a lie down*

0
Hannah | 21 January 2011 - 9:52pm

Easy

2
DogFacedBoy | 18 January 2011 - 7:36pm

I'd always assumed it was

0
Brookster | 18 January 2011 - 7:43pm

It must be our

very own honorable editor Mark Ellen but I must say Tal Wilkenfeld caught my eye when playing with Jeff Beck recently.

0
Ozmium | 18 January 2011 - 7:51pm

I seem to recall my attention

drifted somewhat onto his female band-mates the last time I saw Joseph Arthur

0
happy harry | 18 January 2011 - 7:58pm

WHOA!

Just googled "Ugly Bass Player" and there's a site! Of course there's a site....

http://www.uglybassplayer.com/

0
Bodhisattva | 18 January 2011 - 8:00pm

Kim Deal.

Good looking. Also extremely cool.

6
ganglesprocket | 18 January 2011 - 8:03pm

Isn't it an acknowledged fact

that's she's just gorgeous?

0
James Blast | 19 January 2011 - 1:00am

I remember seeing The Breeders years ago...

... at the QMU in Glasgow.

I think the "entire" room wanted to shag Kim Deal. The only other performer I've seen who had that effect was Jeff Buckley at The Garage.

0
ganglesprocket | 19 January 2011 - 10:18am
Norwegian Blue | 19 January 2011 - 4:32pm

*paging Crowther*

I think we have found the mother of your theoretical children sir!

1
ganglesprocket | 19 January 2011 - 5:24pm

Ahem

*coughs politely*

1
JoLean | 19 January 2011 - 5:34pm
David Wright | 18 January 2011 - 9:02pm

Somebody had to

so it may as well be me

John "ridiculously good looking" Taylor

0
Dave Amitri | 18 January 2011 - 9:07pm

Mmmm

Major eleven-year-old boy crush. Still glad you did it rather than me, though!

0
Dadwardo | 18 January 2011 - 10:14pm

John Taylor..

..absolutely. Could've had his pick of the lasses and married Amanda DeCadenet. Doh!

0
Prestonia | 18 January 2011 - 10:34pm

well...

I woulda

0
James Blast | 19 January 2011 - 1:01am

Me too..

..it's just that pick of the lasses clause that divides me and JT, JB.

0
Prestonia | 19 January 2011 - 5:57pm

As so often

We have been here before http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/hot-bassists and then as now the answer is surely Jo Wadeson of The Waterboys and Thea Gilmore's band

1
Gatz | 18 January 2011 - 9:17pm

Oh yes

Spent a whole Thea Gilmore gig admiring her fine, err, playing. Very charismatic lady.

0
Twangothan | 19 January 2011 - 3:17pm

What? No one has mentioned either Melissa or Gail?

Melissa Auf Der Maur

Gail Ann Dorsey

3
Glenbervie | 18 January 2011 - 9:19pm

Erm...

Maybe they're not good photos, but I can't see the appeal myself, not one little bit.

1
Nasalhair | 23 January 2011 - 2:31pm

Gail Ann Dorsey

is awesome on any number of levels - her technical ability and singing, to name just two. Well spotted Sir!

0
Badlands | 23 January 2011 - 3:07pm

Fourteen posts in and not one mention of........

......Paul Simonon? Tsk, tsk......

Then you have the boy Wire and Alex James.

On the other hand, there are numerous who fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.....

Foxton, Wyman, Waters, Guigsy, Mat Osman, Leon Wilkeson, Garry Tallent and Jack Bruce. The sort of photo's you'd put on the mantelpiece to keep the kids away from the fire.

Up arrow for Melissa mind, even though the great muso that is Courtney Love has the sheer frontage to cast aspersions on her technique (!)

1
Six Dog | 18 January 2011 - 9:37pm

How could I have...

...forgotten Paul Simonon? Although, as a girly, he has gone down in my estimation/future husband calculations after running off with his mate's wife.

0
JoLean | 18 January 2011 - 10:00pm

Simonon...

Aye, if I were a burd i'd probably want to shag him....

1
Big Si | 18 January 2011 - 10:01pm

Tell you what

He's improved with age.

And so has his tailor.

0
Paul Waring | 18 January 2011 - 10:05pm

Isn't it an acknowledged fact

that he's the best looking man on Planet Rock and indeed Earth?

1
James Blast | 19 January 2011 - 12:59am

don't forget his understudy

bottom left, best pic I could find of Stan Stammers out of ToH and SoD

0
James Blast | 19 January 2011 - 1:05am

Mr Blast

You could be right there.

0
JoLean | 19 January 2011 - 8:57am

Aimee Mann

You beat me to it

So to speak

0
Twangothan | 19 January 2011 - 9:58am

I win

Always wanted an excuse to share Esperanza

1
Nigell | 18 January 2011 - 10:48pm

Kim Deal, Sheryl Crowe and JJ Burnel......

Another vote here for Kim Deal and not forgetting Sheryl Crowe and JJ from The Stranglers

1
Almost Simon | 18 January 2011 - 10:49pm

Just spent a happy half hour

browsing Stranglers videos, looking for the perfect one to convince you that M. Burnel surely has to win this category.

Couldn't find one showing him sashaying round the stage in quite the manner which made such an impression on me in my twenties, but this one has its, er, compensations ...

Thanks, Almost.

millymollymandy | 18 January 2011 - 11:12pm
Thomas the Rhymer | 18 January 2011 - 11:26pm

Oops

I somehow missed him further up the thread. Worth posting twice though. If only as a warning.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 18 January 2011 - 11:29pm

Although the documentary

film on him is out soon and its a belter

0
DogFacedBoy | 19 January 2011 - 12:46am

I've seen it

it's about how awesome Lemmy is backed up by various America rock guys telling us "Lemmy is just awesome'. That's basically it.

doubt I'll watch it again {sniff}

0
James Blast | 19 January 2011 - 12:57am

there something about girls playing the bass

Sheryl Crow grooving with Steve Gadd...

1
Nick Duvet | 18 January 2011 - 11:33pm

Not super- accomplished...

But yum indeed

0
Dadwardo | 19 January 2011 - 9:23am

Nothing for Tal Wilkenfeld?

2
skirky | 18 January 2011 - 11:55pm

Just what I was

Just what I was thinking!

Here's hoping she's recovering well from her accident and back out on the road again soon.

0
Trevor_Raggatt | 19 January 2011 - 12:05am

Thought someone would have posted this by now...

And while we're at it - Jeff Beck, eh? He doesn't look young but he certainly doesn't look his age. Not much different from the "Blow By Blow" days.

0
Mike_H | 24 January 2011 - 1:51pm

You need to go back a bit

...but Mrs. Prine wins!

....EDIT...and now that I remember, Jennifer Condos does things for this middle ager.

bigsteviecook | 19 January 2011 - 12:40am

0
James Blast | 20 January 2011 - 10:53pm

We were all young and stoopid once...

Me doing (probably) a Fairport cover at the Greenbelt festival about 20+ years ago. Good grief, was I ever that young?

Yeah, cosmic and all that...

0
Trevor_Raggatt | 27 January 2011 - 12:17am

Props to Rika Hamamoto (Melt Banana)

She can play like a demon and it's safe to say I was pretty much mesmerised by her at Supersonic

There's a nice picture here
http://bit.ly/hx6irj

And a mention must go to Vivian Slaughter form Gallhammer (about 2 mins in)

0
Grant | 19 January 2011 - 12:12am

He might not be the best looking

but he has the best look, as well as the best name, and the ladies clearly love him. On bass, ladies and gentlemen, I give you: The House Of Lords....

Pax Romana | 19 January 2011 - 1:03am

even

his plank looks meringue

1
James Blast | 19 January 2011 - 1:07am

Your entire post scans

perfectly with "Waving My Arms In The Air" by Syd Barrett, which I hope goes some way to compensating for the fact that you're not quite as pretty a bassist as THOL.

0
Pax Romana | 19 January 2011 - 1:18am

Has Jarvis been on the cakes?

Reciting the bassline to Sorted for E's and Wizz obviously sent him to the donuts. Poor chap

0
Six Dog | 19 January 2011 - 3:31pm

I was thinking

more a portly Peter Sellers or a slim Ronnie Barker

0
DogFacedBoy | 19 January 2011 - 4:57pm

Tina Weymouth is 60.

Sixty!!! How did that happen?

0
Billybob Dylan | 19 January 2011 - 1:19am

may i suggest

Danielle Ward not only a fiesty bass player but also a very witty comic .

0
Danmac | 19 January 2011 - 9:44am

Warpaint

0

0
art vanderlay | 24 January 2011 - 6:32pm

No crushes or anything,

but one of the few people I've ever wanted to be....Phil Lynott.

....without the, er, 'problems' of course.

As stated in an article many years back, one of the very few people cool enough to wear leather trousers and get away with it.

0
Harold Holt | 19 January 2011 - 9:07pm

One for the Ladies

Curt Smith from TFF...now a bit of a silver fox

Can I refer you to the comments about Kim Deal above...grrrrrrrrrr

0
Richie B | 19 January 2011 - 9:11pm

C'mon!

that's one of the things I could do without

and I always thought he was a bit of a ming-er

I win. Do I get a prize?

0
MrLovegrove | 20 January 2011 - 6:42pm

well...

I did want to, so thank you Mr. L

BTW she was pretty hot earlier in her Gun Club days and later with The Damned

0
James Blast | 20 January 2011 - 10:15pm

She...

...was my immediate knee-jerk reaction when I saw the question.

0
Nasalhair | 23 January 2011 - 2:33pm

Sid......super cool......

.....brilliant!
With or without the ugly girlfriend and the needle in the arm?

Erm, is this a test for the first person to say, erm, Paul?
Specifically, late May '66 (I think) and the promos to 'Paperback Writer' and 'Rain'.
Not just the coolest/most beautiful bass player, the coolest/most beautiful person to ever exist.

0
ranger | 21 January 2011 - 11:06am

Saw Ed Harcourt

a couple of years ago and he had stunning femal bassist and a rather gorgeous female violinist too. Dont know who they were but rather nice on the eye.
