King Tut's.
Oh, wow.

Just wanted to share that with you. Convention dictates that a question is called for , so ... best gig so far this year? Oh, and it has to be someone you haven't seen/(heard) before - let axes remain unground.

David Gray at Symphony Hall, B'ham.

Tad "uncool", perhaps, but fabulous sound and venue, good singer in good (loud) voice, backed up by a tight band, taking slight risks in re-arrangements of familiar material (but, lets be honest, the "beats" in Babylon have aged pretty badly, so good to hear the back of them). I expected it to be worthy, but I am not too proud to say I am still looking for my socks.

Max Moonlight, guitarist & busker - Cornmarket Street, Oxford...

one day last week... he played a jazzy, instrumental version of Randy Newman's 'Simon Smith And The Amazing Dancing Bear'. It was beautiful.

Cracking album too

... a great mixture of eastern European and folky/gypsy sounds and wonderful melodies.

Robert McCreedy

Fairly obscure US singer (although he did write Two Seconds, most notably performed by Laura Cantrell) who was supporting the almost as unknown Bellwether at The Borderline. I'd seen this guy wandering around in a stetson but had no idea who he was. He came on stage and was brilliant. No-one in the very small crowd wanted him to leave the stage, but as support he had to go.
I bought his CD, but it was comparatively lacklustre.

Kula Shaker

at SB Empire. I'd never heard a note from them until a friend suggested going along.

Reading a bit about them since then reveals that they are hardly critical favourites (to say the least) but honestly, they were just great.
