Best Cover CD .... Ever??

Stephen G's picture

Played this month's Cover CD on the drive to work today - every single song has its merits and there are 7 or 8 standout tracks, the pick of the bunch on first listen being the song by Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts. Would just like to express by appreciation to the Word staffers, since being somewhat "time poor" these days (3 young children + 1 on the way) these CDs provide my only real opportunity to hear some decent new music (Later... is my other source but it can be a bit patchy). Of the 15 acts featured on this month's CD, 11 were completely new to me and would otherwise have almost certainly remain completely unheard by these ears. Thanks again chaps.

I do.

I'm gonna have to listen to it tonight

thanks for the impetus. I am similarly time poor and this week is a nightmare but it's going in the car and the podcasts can wait.

Have To Agree...

...it's a goodie this month. I have a playlist of my favourites from each of my 50 CDs. Some months it's hard to find even one that sounds as though it will stand up over time. This month, it's tough, really tough to choose between them.

The Joseph Arthur track is spine tingling; Lila Downs just makes you want to dance; Tom Russell is excellent; oh yes, and there's Mavis Staples and Lucinda Williams to savour as well.

You spoil us Mr H.

More smoke blowing ahoy

I agree, it's a legendary set. Line of the disc being "...she called out his name". Not since the Willie Nile days have I been so enamoured of a sampler. Is it alright to play these on the radio?

Joesph Arthur cd

is much much better than the review in the mag. His output has been more prolific even than Ryan Adams this year - 4 ep's and 2 albums of varying quality. I have 3 of the ep's and both of the albums but this latest one Temporary People is his best yet. Another artist whose lack of exposure frankly astounds me.

As usual

I listened to 30 secs of each track.

Sighed.

Binned it.

Listened to some Freddie and the Dreamers....

I'm with Eddie

I usually give the CD 5 or 6 listens, whittling down the "keepers" as I go, and tend to end up with 4 or 5 on the iPod. I'm on my 5th listen of the latest one and am at zero so far, maybe I've just been in a bad mood lately...

I would love to listen to it....

...if the postman deigned to deliver the sodding thing.

Looking forward to hearing it when it arrives...

... as I do with every month's cd.

Always enjoyable, in the car, to hear some acts I might otherwise have missed.

One of the joys of The WORD.
