Best chart singles of 2011?

BigJimBob's picture

I am sure someone will cover the albums of 2011, BUT I have always had a soft spot for quality pop. Yes, I know it is a bit early, but lets face it, two reality distortion fields will be affecting the charts from here on: The X-factor and Christmas. So the chances of Good Stuff coming out in the 7 or so charts before year end are pretty low.

So - in kind of a tribute to the late Jimmy Salville - I ask what are your suggestions for the best chart singles of the year, you-see, you-see, Guys and Gals [insert Donkey braying noise here]? Here are mine:

[The Wanted - Lightning]

[Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (which is also my nomination for best pop video)]

There's...

...still a singles chart?

blimey...

Yeah

that is why I ask: I think the single chart needs some TLC. That said, if you have any kids of say 9 and upwards, you'll know that Weggie Yates on Sundays is still a fixture for lots of people.

For me...

...I think you'd have to go a long way to beat Beyoncé's current single, "Countdown". A great late entrant.

0
Bob | 2 November 2011 - 12:01pm

This, THIS

A million times THIS.

The first single from Beyoncé's current album was none too shabby either...

And then there's Cher Lloyd's Swagger Jagger, which somehow manages to be pop genius and the most irritating song in the history of sound at the same time:

That Beyonce

is ace.

I'm not a big Beyonce fan (save a couple of her poptastic hits) as I think her LPs are choc-full of filler and think loads of stuff is dull, so hadn't bothered listening to this. I was wrong.

I'd go for Katy On A Mission by Katy B as one of this year's stand-out chart moments.

Beyonce - B'day

Not a duff track on it and has Deja Vu. Jay-Z's size 9 all over it.

0
Six Dog | 2 November 2011 - 2:02pm

Beyoncé

- this is the best thing I've heard her do in years.

Kanye West & Jay-Z feat. Beyoncé - Lift Off

Genuinely exciting and unpredictable - Kanye may be annoying at times but he is clearly touched by genius.

A few from me...

... nothing wrong with a bit of quality pop

Nicola Roberts - Lucky Day (just about made the charts!)

Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend

Rihanna - We Found Love

Joe Goddard - Gabriel

seanioio | 2 November 2011 - 12:32pm

Robyn!

No secret how much I love Robyn and Body Talk, but because the LP was 2010, I completely forgot about the singles.

Good call and correct.

Also, I'm not sure if Lucky Day actually charted. Did it? Should have done, obv.

1
JoLean | 2 November 2011 - 12:37pm

Was CYG a single this year then?

Wow. Totally forgot about that. It's obviously completely amazing.

Good call on Nicola. Beat Of My Drum does it for me too: makes me grin like an idiot every time I hear it. I find it just head-shakingly inexplicable that she's selling so badly.

Jo, I'm totally with you on Beyoncé. I wouldn't buy an album, but I always make a point of listening out for the singles as about 1 in 3 is so good it absolutely mops the floor with everything else.

1
Bob | 2 November 2011 - 1:05pm

Lucky Day peaked at number

Lucky Day peaked at number 40 in the charts - not sure how many it sold but it can't have been many (it was the week before the album release though) A pity as it's a great tune.

Just pressed play...

...on "Call Your Girlfriend". Haven't listened to it for a few weeks. Just forcibly reminded how completely wonderful it is. It raises the hairs on my arms. Gives me all those feelings we associate with amazing music.

(And I love that dance routine. I think one of my 2012 new year's resolutions will be to learn how to dance. I'm a chubby 33 year old teacher, and it's high time I felt OK about dancing. I so want to. It's what music's for. Fuck it if I look ridiculous. I'll be happy.)

I have Jo to thank for Robyn, really. She was the one who put me onto her, and "Body Talk" is now close to being one of my favourite albums ever. I cannot tell you how much I love it, how thrilling I still find it. So thanks, Jo.

I may have mentioned it before, but I love music. Sometimes when I'm grumping on about the bits of music I hate, I wonder if the amount I love it gets a bit lost. Can't have that. I love it.

1
Bob | 2 November 2011 - 10:11pm

Robyn is excellent - she

Robyn is excellent - she does a great job of doing catchy pop songs with oodles of credibility. Here is a re-working of Call Your Girlfriend that I also love;

0
seanioio | 3 November 2011 - 12:01am

Robyn! Again!

Thanks, Bob. What a great thing to say.

I've always enjoyed pop, and one of my criteria for liking music is "can someone dance to it?" but in the last couple of years, I've almost completely lost my appetite for any new "boys/men/miserable looking people with guitars". I'm sure it will come back at some stage, but at the moment it's upbeat stuff that is wetting my whistle.

0
JoLean | 3 November 2011 - 11:58am

That Joe Goddard

track should have been huge, as should Nicola Robert's first single:

"Beat Of My Drum".

1
KDH | 3 November 2011 - 2:30am

Bruno Mars..

good song in this or any other year..

0
Declan | 2 November 2011 - 1:02pm

The boy

is a bit talented isn't he? Check out his writing credits - which include co-writing Forget You. He is a bit of throw-back to the Brill building.

0
BigJimBob | 2 November 2011 - 2:02pm

Indeed BJB..

good old-fashioned songwriting skills, not exactly that widespread any more.

0
Declan | 5 November 2011 - 1:25am

Love Katy B

but the single came out August 2010 so disqualified :(

0
tc | 2 November 2011 - 1:42pm

Bugger

Thought Broken Record came out first.

May I have Movement from the Katy B LP then?

0
JoLean | 3 November 2011 - 11:53am

Two stand out for me

Jessie J- Price Tag

Maroon 5- Moves Like Jagger

2
Tom | 2 November 2011 - 2:02pm

price tag is brilliant, but aren't y'all forgetting...

(anything that, ahem, borrows from Billy Jean is still good. See also Don't Stop Moving)

0
ivan | 2 November 2011 - 6:01pm

Robyn, Nicola and this:

nero:Promises

0
badartdog | 2 November 2011 - 6:50pm

Hooray!

I came in to nominate this, and Jennifer Lopez - On The Floor.

0
Art Vandelay | 3 November 2011 - 10:43am

'twas you

that identified it for me on this here blog, I believe. Its a great track.

0
badartdog | 5 November 2011 - 2:59pm

Metronomy

The Look

Stormed the charts by reaching no.190 in April.

Finger on the pulse, me.

2
Ahh_Bisto | 2 November 2011 - 7:57pm

I hated

"Swagger Jagger", but I absolutely love this...

Cher Lloyd - "With Ur Love"

Could live without the idiot rapper and textspeak spelling though.

0
KDH | 2 November 2011 - 9:08pm

I'm in complete accord with you, KDH

the swagger song (I hate it so much I can't even type the full title) was the worst song of the last ten years, so the brilliance of this is beyond surprising. Great pop.

0
Georgedivided | 3 November 2011 - 11:01am

Much to relish there

And how about this trio?

Foster The People: Pumped Up Kicks

Yasmin: Finish Line

Emeli Sandé: Heaven

0
daddyorchipsblog | 2 November 2011 - 9:43pm

Yes to

Katy Perry - Firework

Adele - Rolling In The Deep

Jessie J - Price Tag

and...

Noel's new one which I much prefer to the one before. Suddenly something he's done has made me sit up and take notice once more after all these years, well since Setting Son or something. A strong showing. Not too much like the usual fare we've got used to either. Quite refreshing. 'Aka What A Life'.

2
Sven Garlic | 2 November 2011 - 10:37pm

You're right on AKA What A Life...

I can already tell that it's going to be part of many compilations I make for the purpose of 'driving on wide roads rather fast'

1
ivan | 3 November 2011 - 12:42am

Fireworks

was last year I think...that is why I chose Last Friday Night

0
BigJimBob | 3 November 2011 - 11:47am

Can I

have this, an airplay hit but not a chart hit, produced by Bernard Butler:

Nerina Pallot - "Put Your Hands Up".

1
KDH | 3 November 2011 - 2:34am

This one

1
Los Aromas | 3 November 2011 - 6:49am

Do you know what would be public spirited?

If somebody made a Spotify playlist of all this and posted the link.

David Hepworth | 3 November 2011 - 8:36am

Word Blog Singles of 2011

Couldn't get that Yasmin track.

Roast Potato | 3 November 2011 - 9:43am

Thanks, Mr (Ms?) Potato

0
JoLean | 3 November 2011 - 12:00pm

I am a male potato

More details available at the other end of that Spotify link ;-)

You're welcome - I was already compiling the playlist when El Hep posted the above! And thanks all for the ideas anyway, as I am completely unaware of what happens in the singles universe. It made an interesting playlist for the office.

0
Roast Potato | 4 November 2011 - 12:21am

Cheers Roast Potato - that's

Cheers Roast Potato - that's my music sorted for the morning! :)

As i'm here i'll throw another into the mix - I loved this when it came out;

Wretch 32 feat Josh Kumra - Don't Go

Tune-Yards 'My Country'

1
Georgedivided | 3 November 2011 - 11:22am

Not sure that was

a Chart single though!

0
BigJimBob | 3 November 2011 - 11:53am

Tru

I didn't read the post properly...

0
Georgedivided | 5 November 2011 - 9:23pm

Blimey

just realised I don't know 1 chart song from 2011. Can we choose ones from the TOTOP re runs? If so I'll go for Sssingle bed by Foxx although Hozat by Sherbert is running it a close second at the moment.

0
Jim M | 3 November 2011 - 11:26am

CAN YOU FEEL THAT

BOOM-B-BOO-BOOM BOOM-B-BOO-BOOM BASS?

(Apologies in advance, the video is one of the worst things I've ever seen)
