Belt'n Elt'n

GD Nicholson Esq.'s picture

Without wanting to spoil the issue, I'd like to offer thanks to the team for this month's issue. When I came home this evening to find Reg staring up at me from the doormat (disturbing mental image, there) I was very disappointed. It just didn't feel 'Word'y enough. But boy oh boy was I wrong. Credit to Rob F for bringing out the passion and the love for music the guy still feels- it was palpable throughout the interview. And, to reference the very last answer...

... I bet he does now.

Now to crack on with the rest of the issue.

Can't wait

I saw Elton on an American chat show before Christmas and he was talking about his first time in America and you could see how much that time still meant to him. 70's Elton is as good as anything there's been, in my opinion I hope the interview reminds us just how great he was.

Looking forward to reading the new issue.

I looked at the CD and noticed that The Low anthem have a track on the CD. I like The Low Anthem and was looking forward to a new tune. I played it and there was an odd distorted buzz at about fifty seconds in. Is just my copy or is it on all the cds?
I thought the track was not quite as 'alt' as they usually are on first listen but maybe it will grow.

The Elton piece

was indeed excellent but, sad to say, the rest of the mag was less so. Flicked through in five minutes and couldn't find much of interest. Hey, you know it's probably just me. It usually is. But I sense a general lack of inspiration compared with earlier issues. A lack of that indefinable ( but easily recognizeable ) 'spark'. The website is considerably more stimulating these days I find.

Eh?

You have me wondering if you got the same magazine as I did. I haven't got to the Elton piece yet (insert parodic clip)

but looking forward to it. The Lomax Family piece was superb. Ditto the Ian McMillan Word to the Wise. He's one of the most interesting people on the planet and should feature in a podcast ASAP. If you have to go up to South Yorkshire and kidnap him, so be it.
As for that picture of Polly Harvey on page 43, just fetch her round and I'll be happy to accomodate her wishes.
Skipped over yet another Bobby Gillespie interview because, frankly, I don't give a flying one about him or Primal Scream.
Lykke Li and Gambling articles skipped for now but will be read later.
Ditto the reviews section, although I did read the one for the Bonzos compilation, which is why I went hunting on YouTube and found the Neil Innes parody of Elton.

It's not the end of the world,

it's only a magazine. But, Elton aside ( he's always good value ) I felt that I'd read that Lomax feature many times before, Gillespie too...I have no idea who Lykke Li is and have no real interest in finding out...the gambling article was a tad 'so what'...and the Bonzo's review told me nothing I didn't already know. First Person is almost always dull.
My 'reading time' used to be around 35-40 minutes but it has become noticeably briefer with the last four or five issues.
But hey, as I say, maybe it's me. Maybe I should just stick to 'Classic American' and look at pictures of cars.

I haven't finished the Elton feature yet...

but I always love hearing him speak about music. He was brilliant on a Danny Baker programme a while back.

A great issue

Nice one. Not got to the Elton feature yet, and was a bit "Eh?" when I saw the cover, but loved every word and sentence so far. Good contentious guest column, too. I just bought a gift subscription for my lovely friend Nick for his birthday: I know he won't be disappointed.

Yay

Thanks! Mark Ellen's children will not go hungry tonight, etc.

A preindustrial day

I have to spend the whole day in at home without electrickery today, so that's no music, internet, percolator, tv or cooker. So I was delighted to find the new issue on my doormat when I got in last night. Otherwise I might have to do the dusting.

What will Elton make of the

cover, I wonder ? I though tend to skim on first reading, read what Heppers, la Mossman and Fraser have been up to the past month and then save up the actual reading for the whole month, don't like to finish too soon, like nuts for winter

Elton John

I've never really had time for him, but the piece in Word 97 has completely reversed my opinion. Top bloke, still with fire in his belly after all these years. Excellent article Mr Fitzpatrick.

The fantastic interview he did

with Danny Baker last year on his Five live show changed my opinion of Elt. Well worth getting as a podcast if it's still available. Just checked and it was Sat 2 Jan last year if that's any help.
Looking forward to reading the new issue.

Thanks

I'll hunt that down.
