Beatles Rock Band game - this is what it looks like

David Hepworth's picture

Do go carefully because there's a "tobacco reference" there but this is what Paul and Ringo unveiled yesterday.

Despite having no interest whatsoever in computer games...

I found that rather exciting. Like many people on this site I hardly ever listen to The Beatles (despite loving their music) but that trailer has made me want to play their records on heavy rotation. Hearing so many great songs back to back (Inclusion of 'Octopus' Garden' - respect) has reminded me once more of their winning way with a tune.

Patrick Crowther | 2 June 2009 - 7:49am

Did you notice ...

even as a CGI, Paul has the best hair.

0
Steven C | 2 June 2009 - 8:03am

I suppose we all know

what Noel Gallagher's getting for Christmas now.

0
Andrew Harrison | 2 June 2009 - 8:28am

I thought he got it

for Xmas 1993...

0
Adman | 2 June 2009 - 11:44am

Oh........

that's just fantastic!!

I want a Rolling Stones one starting off with Alexis Korner at the Crawdaddy!!!

0
Six Dog | 2 June 2009 - 8:41am

And

And here's Paul and Ringo at the launch...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8078280.stm

Not having any particular interest in gaming, I was bitten by the RockStar bug at a friend's flat earlier in the year. It's a ridiculous amount of fun, but have shyed away from letting it into the house because, you know, I've got things to do. However this makes it look hard to resist...

0
DrJ | 2 June 2009 - 8:43am

I thought we weren't

supposed to call Bungo by his stage name any more?

0
Molesworth | 3 June 2009 - 11:11pm

I'd have preferred

Octopus' Garden, rather than, Octopus's Garden, but that's just me

0
Rob Fitzpatrick | 2 June 2009 - 8:46am

I'd prefered Octopussy' Garden

myself!

0
Chris G | 2 June 2009 - 8:47am

Ha!

Nice spot.

0
Fraser Lewry | 2 June 2009 - 8:50am

I despair

I really do.

You're not one of those people who say "krizziz house" but write "Chris' house" are you, Rob? If so, rehab facilities can be arranged.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 2 June 2009 - 9:23am

Surely it's up to us

where we live! In one street in south london there used to be 2 Cypriot barbers one called "Chris'" the other Chris's.
Us Chris's have enough burdens to bear without worrying about the odd comma Oxford or other wise!

0
Chris G | 2 June 2009 - 9:32am

Mark Ellen may know this........

"Chris's Fish Bar" opposite Turnham Green station........

Lovely!

0
Six Dog | 2 June 2009 - 9:41am

Is anyone pedantic enough to say...

"Apostrophes, not commas, surely?"
"One Chris, but two Chrises"
and
"Octopus's is both the right way to write it and the right way to say it"
?
I'm not.

0
Lucky Tiler | 4 June 2009 - 12:06pm

Rockband Wag Wii

They are probably bringing out a version in pink box with things youngs girl can do with the Beatles: Includes a tambourine and a camera, a large bag, Eric Clapton and erm whatever Ringo’s wife (wives) do.

0
Chris G | 2 June 2009 - 8:46am

Ssshh!

Ssshh, don't give 'em ideas! How long before we get the Led Zep Guitar Hero game... including hidden unlockable 'groupie' content..? You buy the add-on red snapper controller for PS3 or XBox, and then xxx xxxxx x xxxxx xxxxx xx xxx xxxxxx.(censored)

0
Oysterfrond | 3 June 2009 - 7:12pm

Fantastic...

I love these sorts of games - 'Guitar Hero' was a lot of fun, and this looks even better. It's just a shame you have to buy nearly £150 worth of hardware to be able to get the full benefit from the game. With that coming out at the same time as the remastered CDs, that's a heck of a lot of product released at the same time.

0
Andrew F | 2 June 2009 - 8:47am

...

The package including the game, drums, microphone and stand, and McCartney's bass is £180. The other guitars are £90 each!

With the mono box set rumoured to be £200 it's going to be an expensive Beatles September for me....

0
AgentGraves | 2 June 2009 - 8:58am

how long after will you

utter the phrase "it's funny we don't play them as much as we thought we would" :)

0
Chris G | 2 June 2009 - 9:11am

...

You may have a point. I constantly play the Beatles - 'Revolver' is on now - but I do have Guitar Hero III on the Wii and since I completed I haven't played it again...

0
AgentGraves | 2 June 2009 - 9:13am

...

Definitely want to get the instruments too...you can get McCartney's Hohner violin bass, Lennon's Rickenbacker or Harrison's Gretsch...

http://www.engadget.com/photos/beatles-rock-band-trailer-screenshots-lud...

0
AgentGraves | 2 June 2009 - 8:48am

An old rocker writes...

they do look nice but wouldn't you be better off buying, I dunno, a real guitar

0
Pat Carty | 2 June 2009 - 9:42am

...

I think there's some middle ground here - I am already learning piano - I find it difficult to dedicate enough time to that, and having had lessons for 2 years I'm only just proficient enough to hack my way through a few pieces.

I can play a bit of guitar too, strum a few chords and even pick my way through some of 'Blackbird'.

But sometimes I just want to sit down with Guitar Hero and feel like I'm banging out some Rage Against the Machine or Foo Fighters - I certainly don't have the time or talent to learn them on the real thing, so it's probably the closest I'm going to get, and it's pretty instant gratification. Give me the Beatles in that form, and I'll be one happy bunny!

0
AgentGraves | 2 June 2009 - 9:57am

Fair point

and well made, I've never tried the game so I don't know.

0
Pat Carty | 2 June 2009 - 10:04am

But is there

a sitar?

0
Steven C | 2 June 2009 - 10:43am

and

will Paul's 'guitars' be left-handed??

0
eddie g | 2 June 2009 - 11:27am

Is this you?

0
Cadabra | 2 June 2009 - 7:19pm

Macca played a Hohner violin bass?

Did he get Messrs Hohner to copy his famous Hofner violin bass for him? :-)

0
stimpy | 2 June 2009 - 5:39pm

..

meh, 'f', 'h', whatever :-)

Rich

0
AgentGraves | 2 June 2009 - 7:54pm

Plus and minus

Looking at those instruments, two thoughts came to mind:

1) The drum pads have a proper Ringo-esque black oyster wrap finish! Such a nice touch.

2) A tremolo on a bass? I know it's because it's part of the game, but honestly...!

0
Cadabra | 2 June 2009 - 7:25pm

"Tremolo on a bass?"

0
nigelthebald | 3 June 2009 - 6:07am

Great stuff, at one point in

Great stuff, at one point in the trailer I thought it would only be pre-1966 stuff or whenever they stopped playing live. So which is better, Guitar Hero or Rock Band?

0
Paul Cunningham | 2 June 2009 - 10:56am
TIAL | 6 June 2009 - 9:40am
DrJ | 6 June 2009 - 11:04am

Is it just me, or...

... on the BBC clip, did Thumbs and Bongo look like they'd just woken up in the green room, having been chloroformed at their mansions and smuggled there by undercover postmen, and told by very large ape-like grunts that they had to get on stage in TWO MINUTES and talk to thousands of people about a computer game based around the Beatles' music, on a live broadcast?

And was it co-incidence Yoko got cut off before she could say anything?

No?

OK then...

0
Alex Gold | 2 June 2009 - 11:27am

I wonder...

...if this game had been around in 1957, would we have actually had the Beatles at all?

0
eddie g | 2 June 2009 - 11:34am

that's

what I was getting at above

0
Pat Carty | 2 June 2009 - 11:41am

Nice

Probably much more fun than any version of Guitar Hero because the selection of songs in GH is so utterly rubbish and many of them aren't by the real bands anyway.

0
Neil Jung | 2 June 2009 - 11:41am

I don't get it!

Surely anyone old enough to care about the Fabs is too old to care about video games? ;-)

0
Adman | 2 June 2009 - 11:50am

not necessarily...

...I was born 2 years after they split up, and I've been listening to them all my life. My 9 year old niece has loads of Beatles on her iPod!

0
AgentGraves | 2 June 2009 - 12:21pm

Alright...

Fair enough then. I was only messing really...

0
Adman | 2 June 2009 - 2:30pm

The Beatles' World Domination Part IV, or V ... or maybe VI?

Obviously the period 1963-70, then the mid-70s pre-punk re-release of every single and LP, the 1980s CD releases, the 1990s 'At The BBC'/'Anthology'/'1' onslaught, the 21st Century 'Let It Be ... Naked' / 'Love' remixes, and now the re-mastered digital / stereo / mono / X-Box manoeuvre.

Personally I'm all for it. Although I think they missed a trick by not taking up the Maharishi's invitation to stand for Parliament in 1992. I'm guessing that at least they wouldn't have had to fiddle their expenses.

0
Steven C | 2 June 2009 - 12:29pm

a nerd writes

feel free to sneer and grumble all you like, I'm looking forward to playing 'Don't Let Me Down' on the Apple rooftop. Real n fake guitars, you can have both. Its not a substitute, its a sherbert dip type instant rush!

Its quite fun whatever age you are. You stick to your football player chappies and I'll have this. Sunlight be damned!

0
DogFacedBoy | 2 June 2009 - 12:30pm

koowull -

but where's the ammo store - and when do we get to blam the Stones? Eat metal Who muthafucka! Hey Davies Frag your Kinky ass! Oasis? Noob loser - BLAM BLAM BLAM!!!

0
Sheev | 2 June 2009 - 1:26pm

Will my real...

Grestch duo-jet work with it?

0
shane pacey | 2 June 2009 - 1:44pm

true life anyone?

the senarios on these games are very limted how about some true life rock moments:
Strum along to the chords as our rock heroe writes his famous world conquering ballad while his first wife and childhood sweet heart sobs in the next room because he's told her he's leaving for glamorous german woman he's just met.

or perhaps tinkle along as our hero picks out the tune of his hatefilled diatribe against the public school system , his parents and nuclear war sat on the verandha of his castle in spain.

or try to smile and play on after one the band has found it he has a solo deal and will jump ship after you've played hamburg.
anymore?

0
Chris G | 2 June 2009 - 2:16pm

Point of Pedantry...

...but didn't Paul play drums on Back in the USSR? Or am I missing the point entirely?

0
Martin | 2 June 2009 - 4:04pm

That's nothing.

Lennon wasn't on Here Comes the Sun at all.

0
Paolo Meccano | 7 June 2009 - 9:02am

What's next?

'Rockmag' on the Wii? Get a plastic Remington typewriter and bash out 200 words on the MC5 whilst Lester Bangs berates you.

If you get it right, you get an Olympus portable and have to review The Clash whilst Julie Burchill sits opposite you.

Final level is to use your fake plastic Mac to write a subtly witty piece on Richard Thompson whilst Mark Ellen gently reminds you it's press day...

0
stimpy | 2 June 2009 - 5:44pm

what ever happens

"rockmag" cyber journos won't have been at the same gig as paying punters over at "rockfan".

0
Chris G | 2 June 2009 - 6:02pm

The Two Of Us

Behind the traditional thumbs-aloft japery there's something really quite poignant about seeing Macca and Ringo together there. When the door closes on the outside world they know they're the only two people in the universe who can truly share the experience of what it was like being a Fab. How lonely it'll be when there's one man left standing.

0
Nick_Setchfield | 2 June 2009 - 7:19pm

Wellllll......

...I did start a (rather controversial) thread about Pete Pest vis a vis the Last Fab Standing scenario a few weeks back. But I'll say no more....

0
Colin H | 2 June 2009 - 9:02pm

very true that

good point nick. despite everything there's still something special about them both being around and getting on at these kind of things.

0
sandamiano | 2 June 2009 - 8:24pm

I'm still confused

by the Tobacco reference?

Where?

0
milkybarnick | 2 June 2009 - 9:15pm

Tobacco

It's two seconds into the clip.

0
Fraser Lewry | 10 June 2009 - 2:32pm

Pah

Ringo playing drums on Back in the USSR? Does he throw down the sticks halfway through and storm out?

0
Captain Underpants | 2 June 2009 - 10:30pm

You lot won't be happy

until they bring out Folk-Rock band and it's Fairport edition. For anyone getting too excited,I made it up.
Rock Band is great fun. It's better than Guitar Hero

0
Sour Crout | 2 June 2009 - 10:28pm

wii rockband mash up

surely the balance board gizmo and the musical instruments and probably a digital cod piece can mean only one thing "Jethro cocking tull" can you knock out living in the past while balancing on one leg.....

0
Chris G | 2 June 2009 - 11:03pm

Mmm... cyberdildonics...

A digital codpiece for the Wii? Please tell me that's real. Please!

Do you get a French Horn

Do you get a French Horn with it so someone can sit out their turn to be Alan Civil? What about the bit where you have to use your Wii controller to thread imaginary tapes on Revolution #9? Anyway this is all very nice but can we have Let It Be on DVD please?

0
Dr Volume | 2 June 2009 - 11:33pm

more grown men

0
ivan | 3 June 2009 - 3:51pm

awesome

Wow. This is awesome. So I can click click clickity click along to all the beatles hits? Fab-tastic. Clickity, click click click click click. double click, whammmy barrrrrrrr. click. click....CLICK.

Sorry, I still don't get this. A mate of mine invited me round with a bunch of other guys to have a few beers and play 'rock band' on the wii. I clicked my way through one song before giving it up for the evening. It was sssssooooo dull. Like a week in the jail.

Don't get me wrong, I love computer games, having played them for years but I just don't see what all the fuss is about.

Also, Macca and Bongo looked like they were both clueless as to why they were there, but my God the cheque must have been nice.
