Beatles Remasters In US Stores Now

Futurenoir's picture

So, when I worked in a record shop in the 80's, we used to get Monday's new releases the previous Friday. Sneakily, we used to put them out in the racks on the Saturday morning to draw in the shoppers and the obsessives who liked the idea of getting the new releases a couple of days early (pre internet, of course.)

Looks like some stores in the USA are doing this with the new Beatles Remasters, as a quick trawl of the internet reveals that they are already on the shelves in Target and Best Buy stores.

The upshot of this of course, is that the whole set of stereo remasters can already be downloaded from various torrent sites. I'm not advocating, condoning or supporting this, but I have sampled a couple of tracks, just out of curiosity (Strawberry Fields and Tomorrow Never Knows, as they are my favourites) to compare the sound quality. Even on my small PC speakers, they sound extraordinary.

Just thought I'd let you know, as many "remasters" are simply a marketing strategy to get you to buy again what you already own, but these, I think, are going to be something special.

Cant' Wait

Magical Mystery Tour is one of my absolute favoutites.Classic psychedelia that fits perfectly with Sgt. Pepper. It puzzles me as to why it is so often overlooked in their canon. For once, the Americans got it absolutely right. Sublime gems on there, collected together as they should have been to create a magnififcent album.

Magical indeed

especially the piano noodling at the end of the title track - one of my favourite Beatles moments.

Please Please Me / Abbey Road

I really want to hear these two now, as people that have downloaded them say they sound infinitely better

"I Want You..." is apparently "so loud"
and "Please Please Me" made someone want to have some sexy solo hand dances.

The revelation about the Love album for me was Ringo so I'm even more excited about these masters having read this thread.

Surely Apple/EMI are likely to kick up a fuss if they discover some stores are selling them early? What are the implications of all this?

In stores

Gentlemen, rest assured neither Target nor Best Buy are currently selling the Beatles CD's, I've just looked in my nearest branches. Where does this stuff come from?

For those of us who still buy from record shops

... (both of us!) ... how much are the stereo versions (individually) going to be? Is it too much to hope that they will be the same price as on-line?

At HMV

in store, the majority will be £11.99. The White Album, and Past Masters wil be slightly more.

Stuff is generally cheaper online due to tax reasons.

Best Buy

The new Best Buy sales flyer is advertising the single discs at 9.99 (dollars), with the current exchange rate that makes them quite the bargain.
