BBC Sound of 2009

Beany's picture

Fifteen of the best rising music stars have been announced as the longlist for the BBC's Sound of 2009.

Given their list of 2008 contained Adele, Duffy, The Ting Tings and Glasvegas, we can assume that we will be hearing nuch more from these acts.

A quick listen to Little Boots - sounds ok, needs to stop fiddling with the stylophone and address the audience. Empire Of The Sun - the Pet Shop Boys legacy is alive and well! The Temper Trap - noodling returns.

Florence And The Machine - "a quirky singer-songwriter in the grand tradition of Kate Bush, Bjork or PJ Harvey, Florence Welch makes music that is familiar, joyful and accessible while still uncompromising, fresh and eccentric." No pressure then. On this song she is not.

I say let VV Brown get it

She's really really really good. Find her last single, Crying Blood, on YouTube and tell me she's not a great pop star.

I predict The Passion Pit

will get a Word cover some time in 2009 - have you seen their beards?

My opinion counts for very little but...

...underwhelmed doesn't even begin to describe it. I quite liked Mumford and Sons but the rest was very average. God knows what yer man from The Sleepy Jackson thinks he's playing at.

Too much evidence of soundscapes or Brit Schooled never-gonna-bes (and soundscapes for me is such superb shorthand for unlistenable up-its-own-arse claptrap!) and not enough of words and tunes.

I've got the Empire of the Sun album

and it is very good indeed. It's that chap from the Sleepy Jackson. Very impressive.

Where's Howie?

I was disappointed not to see Howie Payne in there. Anyone who remembers the brilliant Scouse band The Stands from a few years ago will know his voice. His debut solo album comes out next year and judging by the three wonderful tracks on his myspace it's going to be a cracker. Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young, it's all in there and it just sounds so great.
