Another reason to dislike Charlie Brooker.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment_and_arts/10275290.stm

TV host Konnie Huq and Screenwipe presenter Charlie Brooker are engaged to be married, her spokeswoman has confirmed. Former Blue Peter presenter Huq - the new host of The Xtra Factor - has been dating Brooker, 39, for several months.

Huq, 34, recently said in an interview that she was in a relationship with a TV screenwriter called Charlie and that "he is definitely a keeper". "Is he 'the one?' Yes, but then I say that about everyone I date. Two weeks later, I've changed my mind."

So there is still hope for the rest of us then.

If he starts getting too lippy...

Huq'll bury him.

What a lucky bugger...

...she is. I'd quite happily accept Charlton as my Hetero Life Partner (q.v. Jay & Silent Bob).

Hope it works for them, seriously.

Considering

how much Brooker has bemoaned his luck with the ladies in his scribblings he must be struck with the creeping dread of realisation that he's punching above his weight with the deeply lovely Miss Huq?
Respect due, etc. but won't that water down his righteous misanthropic fury? When he wakes up and rolls over in bed to see Konnie, he'll have to think himself the luckiest bastard alive and that maybe, y'know, life isn't always shit.
The title of his next column?
"Puppies are really smashing, aren't they?"

No no no

This won't do. Brooker is supposed to be sat in front of a screen, making sarky comments and thinking ungentlemanly thoughts about comely young TV presenters. He's not supposed to get off with one.

And what if she makes him happy? I can just see the next Screenwipe:

"Oh, hullo! Today I'm off to the zoo! And my friend Konnie's coming too! Hullo Konnie!!"
"Hullo Charlie! That's right! And we're going to be washing an elephant!!"
"Crikey! Hope I've got my wellies!!"
"Ha-ha-ha-ha!!"

It won't do. Won't do at all.

I think

it's rather lovely that these two are getting hitched. Brooker's often hinted at a soft underbelly, his tribute to Oliver Postgate is testament to that. As for Ms. Huq she's sure a bonny lass and if anything she's gone up in my estimation simply because this pairing suggests she has a personality and character that is equally appealing.

I think back..

I know Charlie made a few comments about the fragrant Ms Huq in his TV Go Home days. As far as I can remember, they were mostly of the "Phwoarr!" variety, but a few alluded to her being all nice and wholesome and dads liking her.

So probably nothing for her to get offended about and dump him.

Bollocks.

I think it's lovely

I have the world's biggest crush on Charlie Brooker. He's a really talented writer, and comes across as a lovely, funny guy. IMHO, he just writes in a misanthropic way because it's funny, not because he genuinely is a misanthrope.

Good luck to them.

Whilst I, however, genuinely am a misanthrope...

with the notable exception of the Massive and a few others.

Patrick Crowther | 10 June 2010 - 11:25am

I like to think I'm a philanthrope...

...but having said that, a bloke stopped me on the street the other day and started nattering to me. I still can't, for the life of me, work out whether he was trying to chat me up or steal my handbag.

1
Hannah | 10 June 2010 - 11:38am

I would imagine...

the former.

0
Patrick Crowther | 10 June 2010 - 11:45am

Aww.

Patrick, you are so charming. I refuse to believe you're a misanthrope.

0
Hannah | 10 June 2010 - 12:47pm

Hannah!

You are an incorrigable flirt!!

I too adore Charlie Brooker - just hilarious and strangely foxy. I definitely would if Mr Trish wasn't around (and I actually knew him. And he fancied me. If you catch my drift)

0
cathtrish | 10 June 2010 - 2:17pm

Really, I'm not!

I've said it before: I'm a rubbish flirt.

Really. It's a wonder I ever got married. (and as I am married, I completely ditto everything you said about Mr Brooker)

0
Hannah | 10 June 2010 - 5:40pm

Aww

can't a guy do both?

0
DogFacedBoy | 10 June 2010 - 12:40pm

Possibly...

"Hi there, I thought I'd steal your handbag. Now you have to come on a date with me to get it back".

Might work. Maybe.

Hannah | 10 June 2010 - 12:48pm

We're missing the point here

which surely is that Nick White's brilliant response to Tom's salute to Patrick's (pretty darn clever)'Huq'll bury im' was a mere 3 minutes in the conception and delivery.

Well done Nick!
