Baseball anyone?
Posted by Fridge on 5 April 2009 - 2:29pm.
Not likely to be a Word favourite, I'd have thought, but just in case - is anyone else looking forward to the new Major League Baseball season? I've had Ry Coodet's Chávez Ravine and Theme Time Radio hour's Baseball episode on Loop in anticipation. I've surprised myself with how excited by the prospect of watching men dressed in 1950 clobber running around some grass...
Anyone else a 'fellow baseball nut?'

Peter Buck
Did I hear some time back that Peter Buck, REM's guitarist, was involved in a baseball-themed album? Would be pleased to have some details if anyone knows whether this disc saw the light of day.
The Baseball Project - Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails

And Letterman comes up trumps too:
Proper writing
I'd recommend anything by Roger Angell to anyone, regardless of their interest in baseball - or even in sport.
The Boys of Summer
by Roger Kahn. Likewise.
BTW - Go Mets!
This involves most if not all of the Boys of Summer
era Dodgers. It's unquestionably one of the greatest moments in Baseball history. The Dodgers are the team you see trudging off.
Kahn's "The Head Game:
Kahn's "The Head Game: Baseball Seen from the Pitcher's Mound" is a great insight into pitching. It finally pushed me from being focused on offense to watching defense, and find the game much more satisfying now I see it from a pitcher's perspective. Kahn is a great Baseball writer - readable and insightful.
And for an electronic angle on Hardball
This unlikely tribute to Baseball comes from a minor classic from 1996, Hardfloor's Homerun. Enjoy!
The baseball fan's companion
by Nick Bakalar is a fantastic primer for the new fan. You can watch games on ESPN America if you subscribe to Setanta. His section on stealing second is amazing.
I'm a big fan of Tim
I'm a big fan of Tim McCarver's 'Baseball for Brain Surgeons and Other Fans: Understanding and Intrepreting the Game So You Can Watch It Like a Pro', not least because of the length of the title. Also useful for those learning the ropes.
Now that Channel 5 has given up the Baseball ghost (after 12 seasons - boy, was I gutted), I've signed up to mlb.com's tv service, which offers pretty much every game online. It looks good so far and Baseball will be back in our house this year. Bring it on...
Considering Setanta
It's a pain that Five have jacked in the baseball. We're deciding whether we can live without it or whether to subscribe to Setanta. One of the joys of the baseball season is that there's often something on in the middle of the night that's worth watching and faffing with a PC based sub isn't what I want to be doing if I wake up at 2 in the morning!
Song for the Dreamers
by Danny and Dusty mentions loads of Americans I've never heard of - I bet some of them play baseball!
And it's a wonderful song too.
Fenway Park in late September
Jan&I managed to get to 2 games last year. I think it could be my favourite place on Earth. Loud, fun, mad, historic and full of wonderful Bostonians. The sound of the bat, the smell of the grass, the roar of the crowd as Pedroia slides into second...over the years, some of our happiest times have been in that old, old place. Come on the Red Sox!
Theres one place better
Wrigley Field in Chicago. It's exactly what a day at the ballpark should be like.

Is this true about 5 not showing the baseball any more. Why not can anyone tell me? Im going to miss Johnny Gould on a Wednesday night after my weekly poker game.Shit
Baltimore Orioles
Was taken to see these guys play at their home venue,Camden Yards, some years ago. I know I quite enjoyed it though I can't remember that much about the actual game now.
I was more in awe of the size of the place, the fact that it was rammed for a mid-week game between two teams of no great import. America really is another planet.
Always kept an eye out for the Orioles ever since. Sadly they've had a terrible time of it.
Very sorry to see the back of Channel 5 baseball
Became a big fan when I had my son & was on maternity leave. A lot of night time feeds combined with sky plus & a sleepy baby during the day meant I had plenty of time for baseball if nothing else. Picked New York Mets as my team after reading the fabulous "The Bad Guys Won" about the world series winning Mets team of 86. They haven't delivered yet but there's still hope.
It's sadly true about 5 dropping the game due to what they claim are prohibitive studio costs, it's probably more to do with the fact they make more money off late night quiz shows. Am seriously considering dropping sky sports & football in favour of ESPN & baseball, only thing stopping me os the thought of no NFL in september
