Barnets of the rich and famous you've copied.....

Lupu21's picture

Hello - I was flicking through some dusty Select magazines recently.

In between articles on Shed Seven and reviews of the latest Shine Compilation was an arbitrary list entitled 'Rock's Best Haircuts'.

You can guess those featured: Ziggy Stardust’s flaming red mullet, the Jackson 5 ‘fro, Elvis’ quiff.... all cool, each one photogenic and iconic. However, who in their right mind would rock up to school looking like Tina Turner. Fabulous mane though she wore. Maybe you?

So, what’s the best rock haircut you’ve copied and totally felt comfortable underneath?

Me: Damon Albarn’s floppy fringe mop, circa 1996.

Terry Hall c.1982

Funboy Three Era.

Was passing a hairdresser's on a day trip to London. In the window was a pic of the Terry Hall cut. Popped in, made to look like Thunder In The Mountains-era Toyah, popped out, hid in photo-me-booth in Queensway station for about four hours, went to nearest puddle and flattened the lot.

Horrific.

I wanted Edwyn Collins' Orange Juice-era hair...

... but I usually ended up with a cross between David Hasselhoff and a cowpat

Morrissey (again)

During the mid-to-late eighties I sported a Morrissey quiff, which had turned into a Tim Burgess by my second year at university.

I have quite thick hair — it's a shame I'm pushing forty, because I could so grow a Justin Bieber.

Most

Off the top of my head: Punk era: henna-ed red spikey one and also at one time a No 1 cut. Other times: a Weller mod look, Dexy's rag-tag gypsy look, a full U2 1980s mullet, Wonder-stuff long hair. A pony tail that I thought was pretty Antonio Banderas-in-Deperado-stylee was probably more like David Seaman but without the dodgy porn star mustache.... etc etc. Nowadays: I'd be hoping for someone to call it a Geo. Clooney distinguished grey hair look - in my dreams :-(

David Sylvian c.1981

It came complete with blonde fringe I thought it was brilliant.

I did have a slight problem. I got set home from school and wasn't allowed back until it was a natural colour again! Disaster.

Blonde on Blonde...

...era His Bobness. Now a ponytail just to prove that I can at my advanced age, when most of my friends have no choice other than a slap top

You and me both.

Except this was 1991.

I didn't do it intentionally...

but I was told by several people when I had long hair that I looked very like Syd Barrett. Did I? Boh...

The young Mark E Smith

Now I'm getting like a middle aged Michael Stipe

Marc Bolan

I did a pretty convincing Marc Bolan for a while in the late 60s/early 70s and received a few batterings for my trouble, too. Mostly from skinheads and other knuckle-draggers.
