Bank Holiday Monday

Dave Holley's picture

I have just driven across London, where the sun shines and the roads are noticeably emptier. The tables outside cafes and pubs are filling nicely and a wonderful sloth has descended upon the capital city.

Two things:

1) There seems to be a day post-winter when I suddenly notice the sheer volume of pretty girls. I'm not sure what triggers the awareness (well I do - but not sure why it happens on a particular day). Today is definately that day for 2008. Is this a sad old man tendency specific to me, or do others share the affliction?

2) There is only one song playing on my internal jukebox. Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks. Its sunny enough and slothful enough, bored and lethargic enough. Perfect for summer in the city.
Does anybody else have summer songs in their heads?

It is a truth universally acknowledged........

...that the prettiness of the girls increases in inverse proportion to the amount of clothes they have on.

Or....

it could all depend on what size beer goggles you are wearing.
On my internal jukebox I've got Van's Summertime in England at a rather high level.

The ladies day...

...in question was actually always a working day and - given the name - I guess it would generally fall after a May Bank Holiday Monday or perhaps Easter Monday, for it was known amongst the press as Tit Tuesday.

Hot town,

Summer In The City,
back of my neck gettin' dirty 'n' gritty,
Bend down, isn't it a pity,
doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city.

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head.

But at night it's a different world,
go out and find a girl,
come on come on and dance all night,
just bide the heat it'll be alright.

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
that the days, can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city.
In the summer, in the city.

Cool town, evening in the city,
dressing so fine and looking so pretty.
Cool cat, looking for a kitty,
gonna look in every corner of the city.
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop.
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop.

At night it's a different world,
go out and find a girl.
Come on come on and dance all night,
despite the heat it'll be alright.

And babe, don't you know it's a pity,
that the days can't be like the nights.
In the summer, in the city.
In the summer, in the city.

(clang, honk, tweet, drill etc.)

Hot town, summer in the city,
back of my neck getting dirty and gritty.
Bend down, isn't it a pity,
doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city.

All around, people looking half dead,
walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head.

But at night it's a different world,
go out and find a girl,
come on come on and dance all night,
despite the heat it'll be alright.

And babe, don't you know it's a pity,
that the days can't be like the nights.
In the summer, in the city.
In the summer, in the city.

Genius in under three minutes.

So true, VV

This was my belated choice, but you beat me to it. Of course, however daft John Sebastian became, courtesy his "enhanced" appearance at Woodstock, what better way to wind down from "Summer in the City" than a toe-tap with "(What a day for a) Daydream". 2 works of genius.

"Lovely Day"

As we pulled out of the drive yesterday in Mrs H's car, her copy of "School Disco.com, Summer Holiday edition" was playing "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers. This always used to be Radio 1's default "look - it's sunny today" song back in the day but you can totally see why because it was the perfect soundtrack as we headed off...

Blue Lines

Anything off Massive Attack's sublime Blue Lines does it for me.

As for the pretty girls thing, I'd never noticed...!

Aztec Camera - Somewhere In My Heart

As soon as the sun shines in London that song goes around my head.

And as for pretty girls? I never noticed the difference in volume. I'm always looking at pretty girls.

Caribou

Warm weather gets me into a psychedelic folk/pop music mood and there's plenty of it around right now - I've had Caribou's Melody Day on the brain.
