Back to the Old School
Andrew Harrison tipped me off to this last week;
http://www.dontlookbackconcerts.com/
Those well known revivalists and threats to Western society Public Enemy are going to perform the whole of their classic 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back' album in full at Brixton Academy.
A couple of things spring to mind;
1) Presumably Dave Pearce, who's live intro to a Hammersmith Odeon show opens the album, will be brought on board to recreate his intro? Because there ain't no party like a 'Dangerous' party, even if you long ago jacked in the rap game for chav house on Radio 1.
2) How will the crowd break down (no 'into a backspin followed by a helicopter' gags here, please)? When I first saw P.E. play Brixton, and before that Hammersmith, the crowd was at least 60/40 black/white, but I get the feeling this time around it'll be majorly white with a few black faces.
3) What will the average age be? Given that the hip hop audience of whatever colour are famously uninterested in anything over six weeks old, and that Public Enemy's political stance is about as relevant to current rap music as Debussy, this could be the oldest hip hop crowd of all time...

Hmmm
I'm not sure about this. I don't mind such nostalgia trips generally, but I can't imagine PE being able to recreate the real sense of danger that accompanied those original shows. I was at Brixton first time round too, and it was unlike anything I've experienced before or since. The music was almost secondary to the spirit of the occasion, and to what they were setting out to achieve (whatever that was), and going along simply to hear the soundtrack performed seems a little, well... pointless. Will the Security of the First World be appearing?
Perhaps Flavor Flav will pay homage to the passing of time...
by wearing a gentleman's pocket wristwatch instead of a giant clock. It would be more dignified for a man of his advancing years...
Perhaps the
first ever use of the words 'Flavor', 'Flav' and 'Dignified' together... The man, when not crack addled, is a gent. He played a rather ropey gig in a nightclub in Stockholm, essentially him rapping over playback of PE's greatest hits and some of his own, then climbed off the stage and walked to the back of the venue where he started selling his own t-shirts and CDs. And he very kindly left a 'Yeah, boyyyyeeeee!' message on my friend's work answerphone which I am told made her day.
